Dropping that hitting shoulder and footwork are also important besides the swing.

And hit the outside of the ball to create a deadly angle as well.

Exactly! The closer you are to the net the more angle you get...very good point!

I played a guy the other day who had a very beginner type serve, something I haven’t seen in forever. However, he managed to hit it in a way that lead to very very little bounce.
On forehand side I figured it out okay and did okay with it. But the funny thing is, if he hit the ball just even a little harder I would have been able to put it away so much easier. His slow pace with low bounce was keeping him alive.
The problem really arose when he hit it to my backhand. All I could do was pathetic slices that just started an even rally.
I’d like to think that with a serve like he had I would have demolished him. Unfortunately I just couldn’t exploit his very very basic serve.

I know how you feel! My way around this is to trust your swing and swing with high amounts of racquet head speed (assuming you’re rotating at the elbow like my video). You have to miss a bunch but eventually you’ll be able to make that player feel like he’s on the defensive on your returns. Good luck!

The compact swing is good if you have very little forward momentum. However when you have significant amounts of momentum, the ball ends up in the net. I choose a vertical forehand in nearly all of my short balls. Because there is nearly zero chance it will go into net or out. And if hit this shot with enough racket head speed, it has enough pace to do damage.

I could see that! Good point. That’s the hop step or cross over step with the footwork that you probably do naturally with it.
