Play Your Best Tennis With These 3 Tips On Mental Strength
Ah,makes sense!
good stuff
Thank you for commenting and watching. Glad it helped :)
Good seuff. Thanks.
You’re welcome!
Right! These 3 fingers, the thumb, the index and the middle finger, are the cancer of Tennis,if you put too much pressure on the grip ! The Graal is that trick ! Only pressure level 1 that s it
So hard to figure out but once you do…the game becomes so much more fun to play :)
I have a science mind and background as well, so I really like blending it with tennis. Well done 👍
Excellent!
I’ve been focusing on this lately and it’s very effective. The problem I have is when I start getting tired I don’t read the ball as quickly and then start to wait for the ball near the baseline, unless it’s obviously a ball I have to move forward on to hit. At 54 I get tired sooner which has a downward spiraling effect on my game. It’s weird but it seems that the fatigue affects my thought process/decision making leading to either being late or making bad shot choices. I honestly think the mental fatigue is a bigger factor than any physical fatigue. Luckily I’m in better shape than most of the people I play, so their level usually drops before mine. It’s quite noticeable though. The early set up, crisp shot, smart shot selections start to get sloppy. I know this happens to everyone but it’s magnified with age, and relative fitness seems even more important now.
Poor Ewing will never live that down 😂. Man do I miss the 90’s era NBA. The modern NBA seems more like a 3 point contest along with some world class flopping 🤦♂️
Such a different game now. Seems more based on trying to entertain the fans rather than competing.
Nice! I got back into tennis at 54 primarily for health and fitness. Now I’m obsessed and practice/play as much as I can. It’s fun to see the improvement and gives me motivation to get fitter and fitter.
That’s awesome! It will definitely push you to stay fit and humble you at the same time :). Enjoy the journey!
Do you use full western grip?
Semi western :). Full is a whole different kind of beast for me!
Falam demais
Haha would rather have me not talk in a tutorial? Not sure how that would work 🧐
The only advice I have for you is to copy rogers forehand its fundementals are solid and the forehand generates a lot of power and spin and is quite reliable since I started playing tennis I have been trying to imitate his forehand and finally after like 4 years I can proudly say that my forehand is really good actually my top shot and can do everything from that swing I can go for winners I can play pure defencivly with lots of spin I can also play passively just generating back the pace if for example I am tired in a match to go for shots the only drawback that I have seen is that it requires a lot of timing due to to the swing lag and if you are a little bit late it may cause some errors but if you practise that enough those will be rare as well
Yep totally agree! I have started to figure out that legs are the most important part once you have a dependable swing :). Thanks for posting!
To me players that have their strings facing the ball(drop the racquet on edge rather that pat the dog), like Del Po, Tsitisipas, and Rublev, are the simplest and best models to follow.
Exactly! I just can’t get that figured out with my brain haha. I wish I knew this when I started playing as I am having trouble duplicating it.
@teachyourselftennis I have also just recently figured this out and am working on more on edge drop like the 3 players I mentioned. They still get just as much racquet lag, which is the key. I think we all got obsessed with the Fed, Rafa, Sinner, Grigor, Kyrgios, Sock, and so many that have either the Pat the dog, or even strings facing completely the other way preparation with the massive external rotation, which does create a massive flip of the racquet. It looks cool. But it is certainly much more complicated and I do not think it creates any more racquet lag.
Always the best…❤
Thank you :)
Beyond word the best lesson to unleash ur forehand you are the best teacher
So so glad that helped! I appreciate the kind words.
Same here, finally improved my forehead after nearly 40years of playing. More power and stable now. Backhand was always more sound. String forward works. More “FaceTime” to the ball was the breakthrough for me. Thanks for sharing!
So glad that’s helping! It’s been really hard for me to break the habit. Trying to change grip a little, but it’s definitely going to take some time for me to get through this. At least I know what the problem is :-)
I thinks you and I we live in parallel universes because what I am trying to do is the exact opposite of what you are doing! I have been hitting the ball with the strings facing forward for years but the ball keeps flying out and long. Now for about two weeks I swing with the edge of the racket leading and behold! , the ball goes over the net then dips down past the service line. 😮Go figure!
Thank you so much for your video. I have literally been battling with the same issue that you talked about, and I have watched numerous videos about how not to be late to contact the ball on my forehead. My two-handed backhand is strong, but that is because the racket is on edge. I cannot thank you enough for your very simplistic explanation and I cannot wait to try and implement that with my forehead
Happy to help! Please keep me posted on your progress :)
very helpful!! 👏
Great analysis. Love the pro examples, really accurate to the content
Thank you!
Thanks so much for admitting that things aren't perfect. You are right, you are always learning in tennis.
That’s why this game is so fun haha. I feel like it’s a false summit every time I think I “figured it out” 😆
Thank you for this video. I have a strong forehand however I’ve dropped a ton of balls in the net for the last 3 or 4 months. I tried to put more spin on the balls and while it helped some it wasn’t the answer. Backhand rarely goes in net. Watched this video and the light went on. Tried it today and hit so much better. Unfortunately I tore my calf muscle serving. At least though I’ll have a positive feeling to go back to when back out there.
Dang! I’m glad your forehand is going better but such a bummer on the calf. Heal fast so you can get out there soon!
I also hit my backhand more consistently than my forehand too and I have been wondering why. Thanks for the tips and will definitely try your suggestion!
Keep me posted on how it goes!
Which ball machine do you recommend please?
For cost I would suggest the slinger. Portable and gets the job done!
Hey Coach, what about finishing with the butt end up when finish?
If it’s pointing to your opponent I think you’re doing a good job :)
Very good tip. Thank you!
Happy to help!
2hbh is the same. Its more a circular motion
Been explaining this to players but rec players are stubborn as bricks
I hear you! It’s rare to find adults that truly want to change their game technically if it’s difficult at first to do.
Ugh, same problem! Good explanation.
It’s not just me! :)
@@teachyourselftennis Ha, sadly, no. I’ll probably go with the WTA take back and see if that clicks. Great explanation and thanks, again.
I fixed my forehand by hitting with other good hitters. I have a good group and another group with strange feeds and shots with weird sidespin. The top group, it's a must to hit square and fat on the strings to keep up and give back. The worse group is never "on" when I give pace. Telling me they don't hit clean and are all "edge forward".
I was once practicing with young players. I have a weird forehand, hitting not clean, too much spin, too high, not able to hit with power.. One of my friends wasn’t improving much his own game when practicing with me. I was stronger, has I had a lot of variation in my game (I play a lot of drop shots). When I left the club this friend began to play regularly with a talented junior (who was very good as soccer). Both were hitting clean, and in one year both improved massively.
Such good advice. I have this exact problem, and for longer! Working on the forward and through. It's hard, but worth the change.
Glad I'm not the only one :). Good luck with your training!
I thought leading with the edge was the right way🤔
Until you start your forward swing yes. But getting parallel to the net with your racquet head on contact point is critical and getting there linearly will help with miss hits.
What happened to your trademark red shirt?
You noticed haha! I’ll keep it up more in the future vids :)
Thanks, good drills !
Hope it helps!
There are not enough lessons on this. This is key in tennis. Great video
100% agree!
in the thumbnail i thought you are jannik sinner and surprise: your playstyle is a bit like him. :D he plays really loose too. ;-)
That is the biggest compliment I’ve ever gotten haha. Thank you :). I can only wish to be half his level but that’s the fun part of tennis…there’s always more you can get out of yourself to improve!
❤❤❤
I don’t think this is the best mental image - it’s one correct form but it will cause players to think on a form or technique rather than intent. Look at Berritini, Kyrgios, Sock - those guys show clearly that the entire intent of the swing is to accelerate the wrist and racket up the back of the ball and their form is not standard but it doesn’t have to be.
Great point! Everyone learns with different examples and analogies so I'm not surprised this isn't going to work for you specifically but it does give the idea of looseness with racquet head speed :)
The elbows up make a big difference. Thank you
Great to hear! I have a strong 6 UTR player that made a world of difference on his forehand too :)
Will this be applicable to the DH backhand? Good video
Good question! It's very hard to do it with a two hander but players like Jannik Sinner show that it can be done! Give it a try but if you do, focus on the top hand being the main mechnism for the racquet head speed.
that's right - you can only control the beginning and the end of a stroke, as everything in between is happening too fast. I recommend focusing on looping the racket behind your back during follow through...kinda like Sinner or other top players...when you do that, you're almost certainly guaranteed of a loose swing...
Alcaraz pauses
Watch again, his right hand is in constant motion. Not as obvious as other servers but he does have constant movement.
@@teachyourselftennis he paused at salutations position, he moves move through the trophy's position, like Roddick
Thanks❤
Do you tighten the grip at contact? If not, if the ball made contact away from the sweet spot then the rocket will roll
It’s all relative to what you mean “tighten” is for you. I would suggest that you experiment with what feels right for you :)
Great info. The looser the grip the better the strike. I tell my players - LESS IS MORE. Frees the wrist up for a smooth release. Almost distracted by this guy’s legs. Lol. he has definitely been skipping LEG DAY for years.
Less is more is a hard concept for people to understand with Tennis! And I promise you I’m pretty strong in the legs, but my genetics doesn’t help haha!
Thanks
You’re welcome!
This is very interesting thanks
You’re welcome. Glad to help!
The BEST explanation of racquet head LAG and speed!!!
Thank you! Love your profile pic by the way. Wish I had a one-handed backhand too :)
Thank you 🙏🏾. You’re still young enough to make the transition to a single hander 😊. My backhand has always been natural and free with not much thought… perhaps from early table tennis training.
Best explanation of the serve I have ever witnessed. 💪🎾👏
You are too kind thank you! It’s funny how these ideas come mainly from on the fly teaching during my lessons. I’m like, “I need to write that tip down to share!” Haha. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
