You would never think a song with 1000 vocal overlays would work this well live

I'd highly recommend going and listening to the recorded version. This one is great, but the recorded version is soooooo big and epic.

The recorded song is just epic and a milestone of their transition from Speed Metal to Power Metal.

The original mix, not the "re-mastered" version.

And you have the great instrumental for the last section of the song. They don’t do live.

I could go eitherway...this live crowd is more of an "epic" atmosphere. I like both for different reasons.

This was a weird era for Hansi live. He had been having ear problems for several years (he never fully recovered) and he was also transitioning from a raw metal singer that sang from the guts to a more techincal proficient singer. His characteristic grit was mostly missing at the time in live performances. It wasn't until a few years laters that he learned how to do it in a healthy way and added it back in full force to his live performances. Nonetheless, he was great (specially coming from the not so good era from the previous tour).

I like this era with the moody melodic Hansi here.

For me, Hansi's best performance is the song "The Eldar". Just him, and a piano.

Oh, we are going to be seriously entertained this time!..
Yeah, a song (or rather cantata, by all intents?) of the rare breed where the storytelling actually matches the epic ambition of the music - hear how the events and emotions are propelled forward as if by unyielding hand of destiny, moving from section to section like all true eposes do - each part building to the next... with fateful interjections of the majestic chorus, probably the longest in Rock history - I counted 40 secs. from "Misty tales and poems lost..." to "...the flame of Troy will shine bright"! My guess is that chorus stands for Cassandra's prophecy "in a nutshell", rising form the feverish visions that compose it. Btw, the "party" moment near the end is the stage where the Trojans dance around the mighty horse statue, in a bliss of the war magically being over... and to everyone the least informed, that abandon is the scarier, 'cause we know what's coming. When Hansi growls (out of the blue, musically) "The blind lead the blind / Carry on, the future's denied!", and the whole, again, shifts behind his voice, the tragedy is consummated.
You could do a thesis really just by comparing the live adaptation of the song to its studio version - "And then there Was Silence" being one of the truly progressive songs in BLIND GUARDIAN catalogue, it's studio version has so many layers, multi-tracking, back vocals and all sorts of tension-building devices shining through, that even without the visuals, you are immersed. AND, the studio version contains my favorite part, which they apparently edited out for conciseness' sake :)). The outro in the best dramatic tradition, that tells of the myth carried through the ages... "Still the wind blows, calm and silent, / Carries news from the distant shore... Sorrow and defeat." Sung by Hansi in his most touching voice. Take a listen.
Not many reactors display the level of "nerdiness" necessary to enjoy BLIND GUARDIAN, many stop at "The Bard's Song / Valhalla". So relatively few dive deep. My guess is you have that intellectual curiosity in abundance, so I think there will be numerous happy people (on both sides of the screen!) if you return more often to these legendary bards. \m/ I will sure be ready for the glory ride of "Mirror Mirror", the epic of "Wheel of Time" (yes, THAT one), the dark gaze into "Imaginations from the Other Side", the operatic bonanza that is "Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill")... and onward.

Most of the live performances of this opera masterpiece are missing part or all of the choirs, which are essential, and I'm glad to see this here is not a case.
I found a nice 3ple fan-made mix - best for listening, and also lyrics and video for understanding the song: ruclips.net/video/jDYNOaYlxH0/видео.html
Beside all else, BG also show a very keen knowlege of history. The "Revenge will be taken by Rome" (in the distant future) because one of Priam's sons, Eney and his kin manage to survive and they escape to Italy, where the legend says they've established the Roman civilization. The Troyan war itself is thought to have been provoked by climate and nature disasters at the time, c. the middle 13th c. BC, and was a kind of a fratricidal war - between the old peoples of the Balkans and West Asia Minor (Pellasgians, Micenians, various other Thracians, their relatives the Troyans, Frisians, and others), all related to the broader Thraco-Illirian civilization, long before the "greeks" have been put in place by History, and that sh*t was actually the end of the Bronze Age, or at least the beginning of it's end. Actually all states and kingdoms involved are destroyed and/or have declined after the war. Those events gave rise also to the Sea peoples migrations, and the very beggining of the Iron Age. On the other hand, the remnants of the Micenians and the "original greeks", who were migrating the opposite way, from Africa to Europe, gradually gave birth to what is later known as Ancient Greek/Hellenic civilization, after a dark age of 5(!) centuries, part of which in 8th c. BC is thought to be Homer (not Simpson :o) ).

Hence, the revenge - Rome conquered the Greek city states c. a 1000 years after these war events.
