That's funny, I'm on that version of Windows 11, never did anything about this, and it's still disabled by default. Any chance this is only a feature enabled by default in the US, due to privacy laws elsewhere that Americans don't have the.... freedom.... of?
I would also like to know where Windows was storing the screen shots. That way, if Recall were re-enabled, I could just delete the screen shots after my session.
Or how long do the screen shots hand around. If you are taking a screenshot every 3 seconds, that is about 28,800 screenshots a day. Depending on the resolution that is going to eat up disk space. I think it might be time to start to look into other operating systems and Windows emulators to run my games.
What happened to windows as a service? 10 was supposed to be it remember? We all knew there would be a new version and it would be garbage it's prophecy at this point given how reliable the company has been about letting us down every other version. They can lie and try to say there won't be a next in-between version but it's not that easy to break the odd number OS curse now is it...
You just gained a new subscriber, bro! I’m so fed up with Microsoft and all their nonsense. I literally spent 20 minutes disabling settings and uninstalling the bloatware they allow you to remove, only for them to just put it all back without asking. 😤 Like seriously, is it not enough that you’ve completely cornered the computer market? Now you want to control every part of our lives too? The FTC should do its job and hit them with an antitrust suit ASAP. I regret upgrading my gaming rig to Windows 11 Pro thinking I’d get better endpoint security. All my work devices are Macs, and I’m seriously considering switching to one for gaming and development-at least with Apple, the spying is low-key.
Use the windows LTSC version, its the version that companies use, less blootware possible (not even Microsoft store), and use Rufus with the setting to skip privacy settings to write the windows image.
As of typing this, CMD's response to this command is "Feature name Recall is unknown. A Windows feature name was not recognized." Either Microsoft renamed it or hid it. Kindly asking for a solution, thank you.
Mine was somehow already disabled, but I'm really glad this video is out there. I'd heard about the feature a while back, but didn't realize it was out now. Good to have peace of mind knowing it's off...at least as off as we can try to make it. Who knows what's really going on under the hood...
The cloud? Most PCs need the internet now. Gone are the old days where a PC has few uses when offline, when you use mediums you buy to install or play media.
Feature name Recall is unknown. A Windows feature name was not recognized. Use the /Get-Features option to find the name of the feature in the image and try the command again. Been keeping on eye with any update.... I don't see it.
It would be less creepy if they named it something like: peeping-Tom 👁️👁️ or nosey-Rosie 👃 But co-pilot is putting it on the same level as the users, soon it will want to start flying on it's own.
I use a Windows X-Lite version of 24H2, and I find it stable, and a lot better, than regular Windows 11. All the same, I decided to take your advice and check, if only out of curiosity. As I fully expected, 'Recall' wasn't recognised, so I'm happy with that. Great advice though, so much appreciated ;-)
Thank you for this. I didn't know this was a thing. It was defaulted to disabled, but I still put the command line to disable it just in case. This was just a random video that appeared on my feed and I'm glad.
This is the exact reason I migrated to Linux this past June. I'm currently using CachyOS and have zero issues. Unfortunately for Windows users, uninstalling Recall isn't an option. File Explorer is a dependency. Just happy I will never have to deal with Microsoft again.
Best solution is of course to abolish Windows altogether, but if you can't afford to switch to Linux for whatever reason, videos like this one are really helpful and important.
I’ve no patience to deal with Linux it’s to complicated and don’t want to have to have to deal with compatibility problems with steam or and future programs I might need
This feature might be the reason why I will get a mini pc just to run linux for my banking, medical, and government related stuff. Then another PC with much higher specs for everything else. Why 2 PCs even though 1 of them will cost 190 USD? Windows is sadly needed for the majority of what i do but for security windows 11 is not good. In October or November of 2025 i will be getting a new PC as windows 10 official support ends I am hoping all my stuff will run. Why am I unsure? Most of what I am unsure about comes from github. Everything else I use should work and in a virtual machine of windows 11 does work.
What an ignorant comment. I personally switched to Linux for multiple reasons and I came here because I felt like it. As far as switching this "feature" off, they turned it on without asking and they can and will turn it back on, either with a new update or one of their constant "oopsy, we didn't MEAN to switch this feature on,it was a mistake....".
I also switched (Mint 22) when I heard about Windows 22H2. I thought I would be dual booting but, I stay on Mint all the time now. For a few programs that require Windows, I'm running 22H2 in Virtualbox and it runs great with fast hardware.
hey found yur vid by accident, thanks for the great tutorial. I followed your instructions to check and happily Recall was already disabled. Thanks again!

Ah Humm! How many other software companies are there doing the same programming for their software? Who is to say we will not be able to stop them, like MS is starting something malicious in intent. How will this be stopped by security? Lots of questions for these implications.
I'm curious whether the DoD/DISA is skipping this or embracing this? Won't this update be a huge security risk for people that work with sensitive info? Clearly there must be a way to completely remove it. After all, computers running classified software still run windows.
Great video. Fortunately i did not have to disable it but nonetheless you explained why its bad, told us how to disable it. So great video overall. Thank you man!
I think people really need to take a look at Linux and see if it will serve your needs. You can create an ISO on a USB drive and safely test it out.. I had a duel boot of Windows 10 and Linux Mint for 2 years and stopped using Windows altogether. Last week I installed a different version of Linux and formatted the hard drive getting rid of Microsoft forever. Good bye to bad rubbish!
Unless your needs are games. Linux will most likely do what you need. I've been using it for 20 years, exclusively for the latter 10... it's fine, I would never go back. I'm not a gamer, but I believe Steam manages a lot of Windows games under Linux most competently.
You're stuck in the past. Gaming on Linux is not like it was even 5 years ago. I game on Linux almost every day and have yet to find a game that didn't work. Steam is great but there are many ways to easily switch to full time Linux gaming. I use steam, Lutris, and Heroic Launcher. Many games run better in Linux, especially retros.
I run Linux on my older machine. I got an ASUS Vivobook Copilot+ PC (Ryzen AI 365) that should be awesome for Linux, but its not... any distro by default runs maybe 5 - 15 minutes before locking up. I can get some distros to run by disabling all processor C states, and seem okay, but that cuts my battery life in Windows of like 8 to 9 hours... down to like 3 to 4 hours in Linux, which sucks. If Linux would actually run okay on the machine, I'd rather run it.
@@ChrisPinCornwall EVEN if your needs are gaming, Linux may meet your needs. but only if your games don't use kernel level anti-cheat. People really gotta update themselves on the new Limux gaming situation =D

Just checked and fortunately this "feature" isn't on my PC yet. It seems that if you are still running version 23H2 of windows 11 or anything before, you should be good. I've had version 24H2 available for weeks now and I'm glad I found this video before installing it! Fortunately, as of right now it seems to be an optional update to windows 11, so I'll have to reference this video again when I'm forced to update.
I got into my BIOS and disabled TPM 2.0. Ran Microsoft's PC Health Check software and it said my PC was not compatible even tho My CPU has TPM 2.0 baked in.

@@Drew1903SG Okay MS employee sockpuppet account.
That's funny, I'm on that version of Windows 11, never did anything about this, and it's still disabled by default. Any chance this is only a feature enabled by default in the US, due to privacy laws elsewhere that Americans don't have the.... freedom.... of?
Because it only works on Qualcomm CPUs and/or if you have an NPU
A library card was so much safer and you still met strangers.
I would also like to know where Windows was storing the screen shots. That way, if Recall were re-enabled, I could just delete the screen shots after my session.
It's saved in a compact sql lite database on your own computer.
Or how long do the screen shots hand around. If you are taking a screenshot every 3 seconds, that is about 28,800 screenshots a day. Depending on the resolution that is going to eat up disk space.
I think it might be time to start to look into other operating systems and Windows emulators to run my games.
If its in db it may be hard to delete while used ;)
If it mattered they are stored on your local HDD and encrypted. However as I commented it only works on ARM based CPU's.
Excellent video! It feels like we're constantly fighting against companies trying to steal data for profits.
The best way to not have recall spy on you, it to not install windows 11. We all need to stay on 10 and make MS support it for life.
i would have liked to but i could never get HDR to look right on my oled on win10. looked beautiful on win11 though
Better yet, forget macrosuck altogether and move to some flavor of Linux! 100% MS free since 2012 and loving every minute of it. You're welcome.
Yeah, that's not happening. lol
How can you install win 10 on a new laptop with win11 pre installed?
If a program installs things you do not want installed and you cannot remove those features, isn't that a virus?????
Apple is no different
Use the windows LTSC version, its the version that companies use, less blootware possible (not even Microsoft store), and use Rufus with the setting to skip privacy settings to write the windows image.
Now that I have Rede available for Mac, if I could afford to, I'd switch exclusive to Apple! Screw this noise!
Normally I ignore videos that are Windows hate/FUD. but this video is super important to follow. Thanks!

A Windows feature name was not recognized.
Use the /Get-Features option to find the name of the feature in the image and try the command again.
Been keeping on eye with any update.... I don't see it.
This is even worse than notepad saving the previous work even if you completely delete the file.
so annoying
It would be less creepy if they named it something like:

or nosey-Rosie 👃
But co-pilot is putting it on the same level as the users, soon it will want to start flying on it's own.

Just preformed a check and noticed it is disbled by default on my Windows 11 Pro 24H2 . Perhaps different rules for the EU.
Same with my laptop. Am in UK.

If anything, it should be more strict in the EU because of the GDPR regulations.
Norway follows that too, so should be disabled here too, I hope. @@powerdude_dk
UK GDPR 2019 also has these rules. What is more worrying is all registry backups are turned off in win 11
I switched to linux after they anounced recall
no you didn't. Even if you did, why would you when you can easily disable it? If you are on Linux, why are you even here looking at windows 11 stuff?
Don’t get so triggered.
I also switched (Mint 22) when I heard about Windows 22H2. I thought I would be dual booting but, I stay on Mint all the time now. For a few programs that require Windows, I'm running 22H2 in Virtualbox and it runs great with fast hardware.

Many features Microsoft puts out allows the user to disable them, but it has been my experience, they are not truly disabled.
Yes, they love to gaslight their users.
Same goes for ANdroid/Apple phones. You can disable features, for your peace of mind, but they are disabled only on your side of the screen.
Just like the refigerator light.......does it relly go off when the door is closed ?

They probably wrote the code MS is embedding.
