Blocking Microsoft Edge execution via registry edits "could" affect certain Windows components that depend on Edge. System Updates: Windows Update may rely on Edge components for certain update processes, potentially causing update failures. SmartScreen: SmartScreen, which uses Edge for filtering malicious content, might be impaired, reducing protection against unsafe websites and downloads. Features like Widgets in Windows 11 or apps embedding Edge WebView may stop functioning properly if Edge is blocked. You might want to test these for proper operation, but these are what come to mind. Edit: Blocking the registry editor may disallow users to restore or back up registry settings, which is essential for recovering from system issues or malware infections. I don't have the time to test this idea.
Interestingly the checkout systems at my work actually have something like this in place to block the start menu from opening, so if you attempt to click the start button, nothing happens. Not quite sure how they did that but I'm guessing it's through a similar method as is shown in this video haha. Great video, Rich! This is actually ironic because it was only two days ago I was wondering how blocking programs from running could be accomplished within Windows and sure enough here you are with a video for it 😄
The checkout systems at your workplace are blocking through Group Policy. Group Policy periodically refreshes its settings to ensure compliance. Interestingly, I have a spreadsheet that lists every Group Policy setting-essentially a catalog of all the ways you can configure the Windows operating system. It’s 4,500 rows long, showcasing just how customizable Windows truly is, even though most people aren’t aware of its full potential.
Simplest - I've done it for years. Just rename whatever the program/app is, change (Rename) the EXE file extension to something else (any extension that isn't 'runnable') For example, to "kill" Notepad, find Notepad.exe and rename it, to be, say, "Notepad.exe.BLOCKED". Notepad will no longer run. This is better than just Deleting the file completely, as you can easily re-instate the program by renaming it again and knocking off the ".BLOCKED" bit of the extension.
Thank you for the videos. Anyway to stop copilot and MS Recall being installed? I am on Windows 10 and will have to move to 11 but don't want the MS tracking or AI crap installed.
Thank you @CyberCPU for another great vid. I know this is slightly off-topic, but wasn't there a big stink years ago when Microsoft started including IE as the Windows default browser? I'm sure there were lawsuits involved! Sounds like they're up to their old tricks again with Edge. Anyway, I'm off to watch your pranks video now =)
This led to the landmark antitrust case, United States v. Microsoft Corp., in the late 1990s. Ultimately, Microsoft was allowed to continue bundling IE but had to comply with certain regulations to promote fair competition. It wasn't the bundling that was the problem, it was the fact that they made it difficult if not impossible for other vendors to compete. That's not the case today with Edge.
I just remove Edge by deleting the contents within the folders called "Microsoft" once those folders are empty, I encrypt them so they can't be rewritten to when there's an update. If you delete the parent folder, "Microsoft" it will be readded, but if you leave it there, but it is blocked, then Windows update can't screw with it. Might be a better option than screwing with the registry. You have such beautiful wallpapers. Wish I knew where you get them. My Spotlight NEVER works so I have something else that makes a new desktop Wallpaper. I think it pulls them from Bing, but nothing as beautiful as the ones I see in your videos.
That's why I use UVK ("Ultra-Virus-Killer") from carifred (free edition). No it's not malware, and I used it to disable the clipboard Win+V clipboard menu from showing up in turn for CopyQ, a program replacement that uses 5% of the ram of the windows clipboard menu in Windows 11. UVK is GUI so no registry editing required. It can block any program from running by permissions, but you should keep a list of those you disable, because not even you can edit/execute them without unblocking them. It can also block entire folders too.
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
Hi, I tried the block of edge on Windows-10 Home 22H2. After the restart, maybe 30 seconds or so I get the Restriction alert. This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect… It will not allow me to close the alert popup, but it does go away after a delay. Since I only did the one entry, I can only assume Windows is trying to launch Edge as an unlisted background startup process. I removed the restriction and rebooted. After a full minute no alert popups. I checked “Services” and only three Edged services are listed and are “update” related and set to Manual. This is not a request to dig into it, just wanted to let you know of my experience. Dan
That was a great video. Can you create a registry patch to remove the regedit from the list? Then you just need to run that patch and update the registry.
Blocking Edge for me is simple, I uninstall it, I'm in the EU, what I want is how to stop WebView2 being stealth installed when removed. No, it's not needed no matter what anyone says, if that was the case then Windows Server 2022/2025 would not allow us to also remove it but the normal way - 2025 also proves that TPM is really optional for Windows 11. BTW, why not use the commmand-line or powershell to fix registry when regedit is blocked? No need for recovery mode.
hello, I am using Windows 11 and want to use the old mail and calendar. I delete New Outlook but it keeps coming back and trying to take over mail. Can you help me permanently get rid of new outlook please?
I tried Thunderbird and I hated it. It just seems so featureless. I finally got onto eM client email program and it's much better. Free for up to two email accounts, and has a ton of customization.
There is an option to modify registries using power shell. With the help of a few commands you can delete the registry that blocks regedit and start it again. Or if you are a little more familiar with scripts you can create two files enable and disable regedit and put them on a flash drive with which only you will be able to activate and modify the registries. I think that also through CMD or a bat file using " reg delete "HKLM\Some\Registry\Path" /f " by describing the path to the specific registry. But accordingly, you need to know the exact path. It is good to create this .bat file and save it before closing regedit. The command should be something like this but I haven't tested it.
When I got down to explorer it was already there. Do I create a new explorer to add the new key? You said just leave it to me meaning I will have two explorers.
There appears to be a problem with all forms of windows activation even those purchased directly from Microsoft! If you mess with your system enough to have to reinstall its OS, or even simply change a piece of hardware! Eventually Microsoft will refuse to allow re-activation. This feels like a scam to most people who actually confront it! Gradually it turns into hating such treatment. I can't help getting a new version of Microsoft Windows when purchasing a new laptop or complete desktop system. Other than that continuing to pay outrageous prices for keys etc becomes insane, due to deactivation by Microsoft eventually, which is often fairly quick. Probably quicker now with A.I. in use.
As someone that does a lot of hardware testing I have to change hardware a lot. It actually takes quite a bit of hardware changes to invalidate activation. It's pretty robust.
If Microsoft is deactivating your keys, it's because they're not legitimate or you messing around in those activations/keys areas. If you need cheap keys, then go to the sponsor of this video. I was annoyed by Edge on Windows 10 home, so I did the sensible thing and disabled the damn thing cave man style. Just killed the edge process and the associated services, and then changed the extension of msedge.exe and some other executables in the same directory to something else. Hasn't bothered me since.

I find that when open file location takes you to a shortcut just do it again there on that shortcut. It should take you to wherever it is and not just annoyingly show you the shortcut. The thing that is annoying is that if you didn't know that you would think Microsoft was going out of their way to make things difficult by doing that. It would not be the first time something was done in a seemingly backward way in Windows after all, especially when you consider that they seem to hate letting you have Windows the way you want it to look. Evidence of that is the way they put click to show more in all of the menus. I have never seen anything so backward in my life!! I know you can hold shift to avoid that but you should not have to. I had an earlier build of Windows 11 and was able to see that there was a registry fix that worked to bring back normal menus and normal start menu. It looks like in their infinite stubbornness Microsloth disabled those fixes. Now with them wanting to add that Recall "feature" it becomes more and more obvious that it is time to ditch them! It is getting to a point that you can't have an offline account any more. I wonder if it is still possible on the latest Windows 11 build. I would not know since I stayed with Windows 10. Windows 11 is really just a crappy version of Windows 10 when you think about it. I think the only advantage is a newer DirectX.
I'm not sure what you mean by an offline account. I'll assume you still want to go on the internet. In Windows 11, it's easy to create a local user account not tied to Microsoft in any way. I set up computers this way for people who don't have Microsoft accounts and who don't want it. If you're on Windows 10, and you can freely upgrade to Windows 11 anymore , it won't require you to create a Microsoft account. It doesn't pay to wait.
Command can edit registry very easily. Or simply create a reg file with the registry.exe removed. This is very very easily avoid. No need to do any of the shit he is doing to regain access to the editor

Okay you make the next video then.
@ no need. Just google how to create .reg files.
Can't get it to take the 2nd DisallowRun. ??? :(
I tried your method to stop edge from opening thru regedit but it did not work. I can still open Microsoft Edge from the taskbar. I tried 2 different ways in regedit: the admin version and the non-admin version, both did not work. I am the only person on this computer.
Did you reboot?
@@CyberCPU Yes, I rebooted both times.
Where can I find a definition of what a hive is?
Look it up on Wikipedia.
But for a short version, it's one or more binary files that contain system/program/user settings that integrate for the configuration and operation of the computer.
I was annoyed by Edge on Windows 10 home, so I did the sensible thing and disabled the damn thing cave man style. Just killed the edge process and the associated services, and then changed the extension of msedge.exe and some other executables in the same directory to something else. Hasn't bothered me since.
How can I permanently disable windows update....can't get it to stay off 😫
thank you, now i can block annoying gamebar
Game bar has two services running, they're easily changed to disable.
@@SpaceCadet4Jesus how
but for edge, what about removing edge ?
Adobe going on that list!
Revo Uninstaller can not only block but remove the Microsoft APPS all together.
Wallpaper?
Please i need help with my my pc. my pc kept trying to automatic repair, i done almost everything under sun.😩
You really can't get that kind of help in a RUclips comment section.

Good tip! I know how to use the prompt to edit the registry, so I don’t need to jump through all those hoops to solve things! Thanks! For 95% of my problems, that idea is gold. Regards from Brazil.
It doesn't pay to wait.
as soon as i got windows 11 i started looking up "i hate windows 11 videos" lol. i just want windows to stop nagging me
Command can edit registry very easily. Or simply create a reg file with the registry.exe removed. This is very very easily avoid. No need to do any of the shit he is doing to regain access to the editor
Wierd I never at least rare when Windows changed my default browsers, if so, at least in Firebox links to that option to change it
I still may need to use Edge, so I just remove it from auto launch at boot. CMD- MSCONFIG- STARTUP- Disable MSEDGE
workers are not aloud to mes with there computers at work and nowadays everyone uses phones to play games and not computers, computers are outdated for the norm figur it out Cell phones or smart phones are just as good as computers
the only people that use computers now are students, older tech people or professionals, everyone else uses smart phones, computer's are about to phase out eventually . I hate to say it but its true
OK forgot about games but there is a way around for them ALSO THREW streaming and you know that

Haha ... good point! But what happens in October =)

@@ethimself5064 Thanks for the clarification. I honestly don't understand the hype with Win11. M$ has made MANY major changes over the years to just about EVERY version of Windows, but peeps are refusing to upgrade to 11. I don't use Windows as my daily, but I am interested in the goings-on!

Totally unrelated, but Rich, I love that shirt man! 🤣😂 Oh, and great video by the way!
Yes I to stop them from runing
Sometimes it seems like the best program to block is Windows update! 😂
You should check to see if this works for Recall and Co-Pilot. If it does you should out a video showing how to block those programs.
Lol you can uninstall Edge from where I live
hey man i have other issue with my pc can you help me out ,my gpu 6500xt freezing when i am idle on startup also if i press win+shift+ctrl+b , it responds after few min with many beeps and amd dispaly driver failed any helps appericiated

block ads in windows apps (like my radar)/games (like candy crush/tiktok/etc as examples)
While you were fidling around with regedit, I was thinking what if you show your viewers an easy method for deploying a home based little server where all the user accounts can be backed up, if any catastrophic event happens with grandmas computer and windows acc.! Only with the neccesities ADDS, DHCP, DNS and probably roaming profiles. I don't think the family members would be sitting more than one PC at a time. If that is an idea, it's all yours to make it. :P
_"Fart When People Hug You"_ 😆🤣
am I the only person who uses Edge? Why is it so bad? Data mining?
Yes Edge and Google Chrome's sole reason for existence is data mining and targeted advertising.
No, you're not alone ... I saw ONE other person comment here with "I use Edge" so that's TWO =)
@@The_DuMont_Network what should I be using?
@@scottmalpass4802 it`s all good .windows needs permanent maintenance ,editing ,deleting ,etc.all these tweaks would get back to default next time when windows update is running .othrerwise you do it all again.there is no way stopping windows from spying .every time your PC is running and its ID is identified you are done.but like anything else good side and the bad together!
Wow. This seems like it's more trouble than it's worth. Still it's a great video.
Before the onset of fecal meterorological incidents, please be advised that "illiterate" is NOT a pejorative. It simply means "not lterate", and implies ONLY a lack of knoswledge. There are folks whose sensibilities become disturbed when they see that word used.
*knowledge ... mentioning literacy (or lack thereof) & makes a typo! Hate it when that happens =)
The only way to get rid of the spyware is to not use windows in the first place. Or have your windows pc as a gaming device only and use a cheap laptop with Linux for everything else. I have my pc only for games nowadays, I don’t use it for online purchases or to browse the internet. And if I use chrome is to look up for something concerning a game or download new drivers.
"The simplest solution is to just use Edge, as Windows insists. Why do I say this? Because Edge was made based on Google's template; even their logo is the same, except for the color. Everything else is more or less the same. Avoiding all of this is usually the cause of problems, as well as avoiding a Microsoft account. Believe me, such small things can make navigating the system much easier in many ways."
I was years ago when MS Edge came out going to use it as my main browser. Then I got pissed off with MS antics of trying to trick less savy people to use it as their main browser. Some people prefer Firefox, some people like Chrome. I prefer Brave which has its own built in ad blocker and will allow extensions that Chrome is complaining about to run without any nagging.
Can't one just corrupt the Edge files?
You'd think in 2024 Windows 11 would have a proper way to go about this. But hey, I get it, Windows doesn't belong to the end-user.
i use edge
ok who ask ?
@xgui4-studios edge is better and faster than Chrome
But Edge is the best browser..
Just block Windows and you'll be fine😂
block Antimalware Service Executable and game bar it is more better FPS AND LOW PING
