Really great work Tim. This is the first video I’ve seen that does a good job of showing and explaining how to dye wood. You make this so fun and interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing your time.
I have watched a lot of turning videos trying to get as many tips as I can get as a new turner, your videos have helped me more than all of the others on RUclips. You provide a lot of very helpful tips in a very entertaining fashion. Thank you for your time and effort.
Thanks a billion...great explanations and visuals...I usually fall fast asleep on most video how to's...still wide awake and my woodworking abilities just went up 10 fold!
your channel has now become my favorite turning channel. you make it simple to understand, yet you are fun enough to not make it boring. keep up the great work,
Tim watching this video was impressive - definitely will try the color system technique. Also liked the hole saw ! What is the make of the hole saw - does it come in a set ( with and without center bit) thank you for your post - still working on Christmas gift list - this will give the pendents a step up.
This is a very informative video and well done, too. I especially like explanations on how the grain and colors inter-relate. I acquired a big batch of 2" x 2" corian samples that make great pendants. I also use wipe-on poly for a finish.
Hi Tim, thank you for this excellent video. Although I've been turning for years, the tips that you gave us about using the hole drill and how to safely use it on the drill press is so important for me personally. I also appreciate the tips on using the hot air dryer and so many other items that you explained. You always do such an excellent job on your instruction videos. Thanks
Wow this is truly beautiful! I love watching your videos they're very interesting to watch and your commentary is very entertaining . Greetings from a German fan :)
best diy video i have seen i expected you to go to the end and not finish like so many do but you showed start to finish all i can say i THANK YOU i dont have a lathe but great video and you are a great guy for sharing may god bless you for being so cool
I use India ink from hobby lobby or Amazon it too comes in dozens of colors and is premixed. Great for tops too. Thanks Tim love your videos and the hole saw procedure is genius.
Some days I regret that my English is so bad, your videos are so awesome, but even if I do not always understand everything you say, I can not get enough of it. Best greetings from Germany
Very nice pieces here, and I really like Bruce's pieces, especially that bowl/plate. This technique is commonly used by luthiers, especially for electric guitars. I'd recommend looking there on YT if you want more examples of using dyes and multi-layered finishes like this.
Love the video, and thank you for the instruction about how to approach the cuts with the woodgrain and so on. As a novice this type of information is so vital to me and others like me. Also, thanks for keeping your sense of humor :)
Great video Tim :) I'm in the middle of making a checkerboard set and this is just what I was thinking about doing for the checkers. Thanks for the How-To
I love your videos. You're so much fun to watch and I also learn something new every time that I can put into practice in the workshop! These are beautiful, I'll be giving them a go for sure!
Such a beautiful I idea. I love the colours of the green one at the end! I love watching your videos, you're funny and I find the art of wood turning absolutely intriguing and beautiful, I always end up on your videos when I'm YT. You make some amazing pieces, keep at it :D
ah gosh absolutely stunning work! i'm no wood turner (although i dream to be one some day!) but it's so calming to watch you work and even joke around. you clearly enjoy your work and i love watching that enthusiasm! by chance, have you considered making a few batches of those pendants and selling them online? i'm so in love with the way these turned out and would like to wear your work! if not, i understand, this is a tutorial. i just don't have the tools to be making these myself as much as i would like! anyways, keep up the fantastic work!
Very cool project. Wondering if it would be practical to finish the back as well if it’s going to be in contact with skin for some period of time? Sorry this is a comment on an old video!
Hi Tim ! Many thanks for spending your precious time for making all these vids (which contains many advices for wood working), and also for sharing your precious expertise !! I'm a Belgian fan ... and sometimes I don't understand all what you (and all english speakers) are saying ... SO, I didn't understood what kind of wood you do use for making these pendants ... Can you tell me please ?
Love your videos. Question for you - the dyes you use appear to be Mixol-based. What do you add the color pigment to for the undercoat (you say something about alcohol-based for that layer), and for the upper coats (water-based)? Is it just denatured alcohol, and water? Or is it something else?
Hello Tim, I'm Nicolas from France, I love your videos! I was wondering if the other objects you presented were all finished with Wipe on Poly? I can't find it in France. Are there other alternatives for a nice shine? Thanks
Hi Tim, loved the video, but where do you get the hole saws from. The only ones I can find have a drill bit in the center which obviously leaves a hole in the center of the pendant.
@@duallygsd Thank you Tim, I am English but live on a holiday isle called Lanzarote off the coast of Africa in the Canary Isles, and everything is so difficult to buy as everything has to be imported, but is so expensive. I will try to get one. Many thanks Keith.
Hi Tim, with the holidays coming up, this could be a great gift item. I appreciate your generous sharing post. I do have a question - what is the product name of the whole saw ? it has no center bit. ? - where did you purchase it.? Oops, That's three questions...
This was a great video and very informative. Regarding the bowls your friend Bruce provided: when dyeing the top rims of the bowls are there any issues with the dye bleeding down the sides? Or ways to limit the bleeding? Thanks again for the great videos!
Tim, did Bruce use a resin to make his tinted items glow like they do, or was it a very hi-gloss urethane? I love your pendants and how you sanded back the black so it didn’t dominate the item! Excellent work my friend. Cheers, Sean
I am pretty sure it was hi-gloss. He might have even buffed them to finish the shine up. It was a few years ago so the old memory is a little lacking :^)
Awesome demo... I have loved your videos for such a long time on pbs.. sooo... back to the project... I'm thinking... Chess pieces.. and board........ hmmmm... wheels turning (pun intended)...
wouldnt it be easier to turn a rod of sorts, round/bevel the edge, and cut that off in a thin disc for a pendant. in stead of using sticky tape to mount a small thing?
I've got an idea when you're cutting out blank just cut 3" wide strips on a table saw then run them thru a planer on both sides. Hot glue as many strips as you can cut with the hole saw in non cut areas just a few spots will do. I do it this way and turn out a couple hundred in a very short time. Works for me! If you want to know how I do the rest ask me hahaha.
excelente amigo tremendo video gracias me diste una buena entrada de dinero eso se vende mucho aqui la ente le gusta lo brillante gracias saludos desde venezuela
hi Mr. Tim, me again lol. Do you sell your pendants, bowls, etc from your site? or elsewhere? I think using this technique it would be good to make "sample" pieces if wanting to dye a guitar, a good way to try a variety of colors and/or finishes onto small pieces, easy to store. but makes wonderful art jewelry as well. so have you tried other sizes than the 2.5" hole saw?
Hey Tim, Great video! However the links to the rio Grand parts don't work. It comes up with a 404 error. Can you fix this? I am wanting to get the same part you are using. Thanks
To avoid sanding off fingernails against the sanding disk, try wrapping tape around the fingers, sticky side out. Or, use hotmelt glue to stick on a knob. (Oh, and when I went to school, red and yellow make orange, not green.)
I tried finding the parts for the necklace but could not find them. Can you be a bit more specific on them? And from the one bale I did find, seems like you would not make anything at $15 per pendant when you add up all the dye, wood, bale and necklace.
Really great work Tim. This is the first video I’ve seen that does a good job of showing and explaining how to dye wood. You make this so fun and interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing your time.
Love your sense of humour. Pendants are beautiful, Thanks for sharing.
Spot on! This is how I stained guitars for a major company. Excellent information and humorous delivery!
I have watched a lot of turning videos trying to get as many tips as I can get as a new turner, your videos have helped me more than all of the others on RUclips. You provide a lot of very helpful tips in a very entertaining fashion. Thank you for your time and effort.
Totally agree
I love the finish on them.
Dirk van Straaten i agree.
Others just rush through and you have no idea how they got to the finish. Great vids.

Boy that was a while ago. I think it was a Milwaukee hole cutter. The drill bit is removable.
Thanks, entertaining, informative and a pleasure to watch and listen to.
This is a very informative video and well done, too. I especially like explanations on how the grain and colors inter-relate. I acquired a big batch of 2" x 2" corian samples that make great pendants. I also use wipe-on poly for a finish.

Thanks Tim. I've been trying to make some coloured wooden cabachons to go in the eye of sauraker shells and this technique worked out perfectly.
Wow this is truly beautiful! I love watching your videos they're very interesting to watch and your commentary is very entertaining . Greetings from a German fan :)

Red & Yellow.. orange.. Yellow & Blue ... green. They would make great Christmas Ornaments !! As usual EXCELLET !!
I use India ink from hobby lobby or Amazon it too comes in dozens of colors and is premixed. Great for tops too. Thanks Tim love your videos and the hole saw procedure is genius.

It is figured maple. Another name for it is quilted maple. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this fastier answer ! ;)
Also known as Tiger Maple as well?
I really enjoy your jokes... You should have a TV show.. Natural born for the camera... Really...
These are beautiful. I wish they were available to buy online.
l Love your videos. Keep it up
very tempting to recreate!
Love your videos.

Wipe on poly is regular polyurethane thinned down with mineral spirits. You should be able to make your own😊
Congratulations! Lazzarini from Brazil
nice video Tim. I tried some with normal food colouring and it turned out amazingly good.
Hi Tim, loved the video, but where do you get the hole saws from. The only ones I can find have a drill bit in the center which obviously leaves a hole in the center of the pendant.

Nice job as always Tim! What do you think about mounting them off center and cutting grooves on the front of the pendant? Keep up the great work!

That's amazing... Question?what kind of color is that at 17.54.....?
Hello, what is your finish product and the producer
Thank you for this video
Marc
Love the Pendants. Where did you get the double sided tape at and what is the name brand of the tape.
I can't remember the brand but I got it at Woodcraft
Awesome demo... I have loved your videos for such a long time on pbs.. sooo... back to the project... I'm thinking... Chess pieces.. and board........ hmmmm... wheels turning (pun intended)...
COOL!!!
How did that green turn out? More like orange i bet 😝😝 great video
Like your hair !!
wouldnt it be easier to turn a rod of sorts, round/bevel the edge, and cut that off in a thin disc for a pendant. in stead of using sticky tape to mount a small thing?
So It's just the wipe on poly that makes it so shiny? Thank you. Please say what is this poly exactly. Thanks
I’ve got roughing gouge envy!
in your video on turning pendants why do you start the base black with alcohol base dye and finish with water base? just starting turning pendants.
I love it gonna make some
Wonderful.
I've got an idea when you're cutting out blank just cut 3" wide strips on a table saw then run them thru a planer on both sides. Something small very nice
What's the outcome if all your dyes are alcohol based, does it make a difference?
Hi Pat. It makes no difference in the end. The only advantage of water-based dyes is a wider range of color choices.
very nice
red and yellow makes orange
i got confused for a quick second.. haha
Bellissime ,complimenti ! Mi Sa dire dove posso trovare codesta vernice lucida , che cos'è uns cera ? Grazie!
Muy bonito compañero ideal para un regalo
Love it
Hello Tim, great video! Can you give the part numbers from Rio Grand for the bails and magnetic necklace? Thank you.
Great idea, I checked out the link, but could not find the rope with the magnet...are the assembled or is there one part no. For it??
george postins m
What does M mean
Red and Yellow make Orange. 😁🍊
Are the calipers actually cutting or just used for measuring? I know some people use calipers for marking as well.
excelente amigo tremendo video gracias me diste una buena entrada de dinero eso se vende mucho aqui la ente le gusta lo brillante gracias saludos desde venezuela
Fill the crack with a carrier and gilt. It will look beautiful. You can use a wax or some other medium. Bruce will still have a beautiful burl.
What grit is he taking the black off?
What finish is Bob using to finish his work. I love the high gloss finish but have no idea how they do it
Is a dye better than a stain for some reason?
wow, really pretty! :U
´ha-HA! scared you, huh?´, my god sweetie, you are so cute :D
Hey Tim, Great video! However the links to the
rio Grand parts don't work.
Are you related by any chance to Ted Yoder, a musician who plays the hammered dulcimer?
I tried finding the parts for the necklace but could not find them. Can you be a bit more specific on them? And from the one bale I did find, seems like you would not make anything at $15 per pendant when you add up all the dye, wood, bale and necklace.
