    4070 lost a battle with a turntable. That's certainly a way to put it.

    May I suggest that you folks hire a professional fund raiser. They know where to go to find the funds to support a project. They can do it far more professionally and efficiently - that is their job. Naturally they would want a commission but they can help you whether large or small.
    Interesting to see the bolts on sections of front of the valve chambers. What looks like a turbo charger on the left side is really the exhaust line or steam for a preheater??

      @nicholasresar 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, they're on both sides of the locomotive and it takes the exhaust stream and directs it towards the coffin feed water heater that was mounted right above there.
      As far as the fundraiser goes, no idea if such a person exists but if you know of any tell them to reach out.

      I personally don't know of any because I have no need. BUT Churches and other entities use them for major projects. They certainly exist, Every campaign for politi..... criminals is using fund raisers to fill their coffers. By the way, if that frame is cast iron... Don't you think that would be better brazed than welded?? @@nicholasresar It is obvious that the weld did not take. Thanks for your reply. I would like to visit and see the engine.

    Did they continue to operate 4070 after the incident at the turntable? And was any work done on the damage during her excursion service? How did the tender get in such rough shape?

      Fantastic questions! Be sure to look out for our Q&A in the new year!

    Wanna make money, cut up that tender into 2" x 3" squares, then laser etch a picture of the train and the roundhouse. Maybe make little key chains. Have a few larger pieces cut out to look like the train (limited additions) Have a few cut out to look like the wheels of the locomotive and turned into clocks also limited additions. What I want to know is once finished, where do you plan on running the train?

    So another words, your update basically means it’ll be running in 15 years with $1.5 million needed a.k.a. don’t hold your breath.

      Steam locomotive restoration is a marathon, not a sprint

      They’ve got to start some where. They can do it as long as they have enough support. Sure it may take awhile, but I’ll stick around for double if that is what it takes to get this poor locomotive running!

      Your negative comments and underestimation are not helping. Naysayers are always the problem.

    Right now, there just too many steam loco restoration projects in this country, this one may have to be sidelined for 10 years.😕

      SOU 722 had been side lined for 2 decades

      Just because there are a number of other American steam locomotives being operationally restored doesn’t mean we have to sideline this one. As long as they have enough support it can and hopefully will happen.

      Unfortunately, the railfan community can donate only so much. The frame crack may be the issue that ends this attempt of restoration. You can never weld a broken frame to new condition, the FRA will not OK this. I know I couldn't get away with this with my car.

    • @nicholasresar
      @nicholasresar 9 месяцев назад +2

      Shouldn't be any reason why it can't be repaired. Welds are usually stronger than the original metal so it should just be a matter of properly heating before and cooling after the repair. Heck, we with some modern diesels, the frames are manufactured by welding.
      And while it may take us a while, the organization is planning on going anywhere so if it takes a while to get 4070 restored then it takes a while.

      CFR 230.106 allows for “broken frames properly patched or secured by clamps or other suitable means which restores the rigidity of the frame“ so repairing it should be inside the bounds of the regulations
