This song is very personal to me. An old friend of mine was killed by a biker gang dude who, point blank, blew out his brains. He was a confused young man, with a gentle heart and demeanor, which I think he may have been trying to harden by suddenly hanging with a rough crew.
A year before all that, he and i were riding around in my Abbey Road white Beetle, stoned, and listening to this song, when we picked up a hitcher and dropped him in the next town, as the song ended, and I seemed to be swept away into a weird hypnotic trance from the song. To be over. And he would sadly be over, very soon indeed. Too soon.
Spiritual song about the river of creation we drift down after having shed this mortal coil.

I always loved this song from the first time I bought the album, but never fully appreciated the lyrics. When I later found out that it was about how physical death is just the beginning of a whole new journey into the afterlife, I was brought to tears. It's one of the most beautiful songs ever written and performed by any band -- a milestone for Yes, and a fitting end (in my opinion) of their classic period.

"To Be Over": On a melody composed by STEVE HOWE five or six years before. Sublime... like the whole album! YES, always a journey into the fifth dimension. Thank you, Brandon.
[NB: PATRICK MORAZ has left his mark substantially on the album 'Relayer'. The sound of this album is totally different from that of the previous studio albums as well as the two following ones ('Going For The One' and 'Tormato'). The musical envelope is deeper, denser, heavier. However, the only new member who appears on this album is MORAZ. The documentation (book and making-of video) on the conception and recording of 'Relayer' tells us that MORAZ participated a lot in the orchestration and arrangements of the compositions. To replace WAKEMAN, MORAZ was an undeniable choice. MORAZ's solo on 'To Be Over' is beautiful... even if it is the second version written in a rush in a single night (the recording was to be done the next day) because the first version was no longer suitable since, in the meantime, the other members of the group had chosen to modify the tone of the song.]
