  • Recent rain and high humidity is making flaxseed harvest rather difficult; been hard trying to get it off the fields before the next round of storms.

Mother Nature like to give us average. Too dry, too wet, by the end of year it’s about average.......

That's called balancing out! Disappointing really too lol

The reason I don't trust averages is because if you put one foot in a bucket of ice water and the other in a bucket of boiling water, on the average you are comfortable.

The muggy days sure do suck the joy out of being outdoors.

I love flax too!! In my area around Rama SK, 20-30 bushels to the acre is a great crop, but compare it to canola.... canola wins!!
    Good luck my friend

Thing with canola is not sure of the market here, would need to shop around to see where the best place to go. For us, a guy buys our flaxseed from us for the past 5 years for milling and such so he's always expecting flax from us.

Yea we have had a a harvest standstill for 9 days due to rain and heavy dews. Around here most winter wheat has been harvested but the majority of the spring barley is yet to cut. Whilst the quality has generally been really good the yield of both grain and straw has been poor or worse. Grain yields are between 30 - 40% down and straw yields are approx half what we would normally expect so bedding materials and feed straw is scarce and where sold expensive. I foresee a lot of white sawdust and shavings being used for bedding this winter and many folks are hoping for 3rd or 4th cut of grass silage or are praying for a decent maize silage crop for winter feed.

The beans are turning color here in SW MN also. Didn't have any rain for 3 weeks and just started getting a couple tenths every couple days. Lawn grass is pretty brown. Weeds are successful in staying green though.

What moisture would flax need to be to safely store in a grain bin for two years?

    • @farming4g
      @farming4g  Год назад +1

Flax is considered dry at 9%. 10% is fine but 11 and up needs to be dry. Make sure it's a good grain bin, it doesn't take much moisture (snow, mist, extended damp air, etc) to start causing problems.

Why do you cut the flax before you combine it. Thank You

Flax straw is tough, needs to be dry. Some will spray it down instead of swathing, but we prefer not to use chemicals to kill crops.

Check out Gabe Brown. Get your soil organic matter up and litter on the soil you won't have as much trouble with too much/too little rain.

When you sort the seed what happens with the rest of the plant matter?

west virginia, is that a city or state or ?? did not know, phone call just before i leave office work to do outside farm work, Farmer down there wants wienner gilts hampshire breed with proof both parents are of the hampshire breed. guy wants 5,000 by end of this year, hmmmm ok but who are u ?? and where did u find my personal phone number. This could be the big huge boost for us getting back the loss of no 2020 crop. will have to go over more numbers cause we need to fill our monthly contract with Illinois farmer first before looking elsewhere. we could do it if given more time, but births don't just magically happen and sometime there is 1 female and 10 male pigs in a litter.
u seem to be driving ur combine kinda slowly, i remember dad always saying, u gotta push it go go go always keep rotor full so it can smash open the pods. how much balls u getting in your sample?? lets see a closer shot of the truck full??

West Virginia is a state, kinda mid-eastern side of the country. Flax was really tough, going through harder with uncooperative weather... the humiidty was the main problem. All the bolls shelled except for some green ones that were late germination due to the dry weather in June, usually have the fan set a little lower to make sure nothing is going out the back... rather have some shells in the hopper than leaving flaxseed out in the field. When going through larger windrows with low humidity, it comes in pretty clean.
