It almost amazing the amount of ground you covered previously with the pull type swathers. Hopefully things get better for the farm economy and give farmers a boost in the future. Many blessings to you and your family/operation!!
That's a really good year lol. 2018 was pretty good for us, but 2019 had issues harvesting it because of the wet weather, and now this year being burned up in June. I've always wanted to try sunflowers, but the darn birds are insane (and being a bad fire hazard too for combining)! I seen some guys in the area planted some flowers over by Strasburg... probably the most sunflowers I've seen in many years.
Farming 4G Ya. Seeded a 1100 ac. They look good. Better price then soybeans. Every year different. Don’t need snowbanks in October again. Finished barley today. Drying it all. Just don’t dry. To humid. Now off to Wheat. Some looks good some burned up in June.
Never noticed before how the pickup header speeds up and slows down according to ground speed. I see how that makes it easier when you come upon a slug.
RUclips really degrades the overall quality of the videos, think they try to compress it down to smaller size for storage on their servers. I REALLY notice it for 360 videos. When I play them back on my PC using VLC, it is so nice but on RUclips it really is depressing.
I presume that you swath to help with ripening and drying out the crop and any weeds - do you ever desiccate if necessary and combine direct which is the normal approach here in the UK with flax?
Yea, swath to dry down the crop. We use to spray down the flax years ago, but have gotten away from that... really don't like to do it in general, and since some of the mature weeds aren't even bothered by spray like kochia. Plus (especially when it comes to flaxseed) the market prefers non desiccated grain... get a little more of a premium price for it. And with the organic program, a swather is nearly mandatory unless have favorable weather year round lol. Last year we took some flaxseed straight without spraying or swathing since it ripened consistently, but on a year like this everything has to be swathed.
This late in the year there isn't much except for lowspots and sloughs. We did do a little bit of alfalfa, but the dry June and early July didn't allow for much 2nd cut.
Yes, flax is tough. A lot of rope and such is made from the straw. There hasn't been much for flowers in the past decades due to the insane amount of birds, but I have seen several fields towards Strasburg area... probably most acres I've seen for flowers in a long time.
Monday's mail, letter from the Tax dept, says our 2nd quarter GST return has not been submitted. hmmmm oh my god taking over a business sure sucks i could cry.
@@farming4g phoned that Tax info number, told me the government does not care about your personal problem they just want your quarterly info. Found Dad's file folder on this tax, every statement i reviewed was a refund, am reviewing a few other things to better understand what i can claim, Farmers can recieve back this GST tax that was paid for farm products. it was a rare 80F+ day so wanted to do stuff outside instead of being inside a office.
Thats a sweet outfit you have there. The flax looks like its running well. Take care great week this week to combine for sure.

Yea I still don't know how we did it lol! Just a lot more hours going round and round is about all.
2016 was a banner year for flax. Averaged 35 bushel. Switched back to sunflowers. A lot more hardy on dry years. Great video. 👍

Great video good luck combining

Yea it is based on a ratio to ground speed. I have it set slower for picking up flaxseed, kinda stops turning if I go too slow.
You ever notice how RUclips doesn't render the full resolution of crop footage? Is that the algorithm at work or what?

@@farming4g Thanks for your reply.
If you get some rain, is there time to get some second cut hay?
This late in the year there isn't much except for lowspots and sloughs. We did do a little bit of alfalfa, but the dry June and early July didn't allow for much 2nd cut.
Flax doesn't look like it would be much fun digging out of a combine.
Like any other slug, waste of time lol but it does tend to grab and wrap harder.
Is flax the one with the tough straw? Do you grow any sunflowers nearby
Yes, flax is tough. A lot of rope and such is made from the straw. There hasn't been much for flowers in the past decades due to the insane amount of birds, but I have seen several fields towards Strasburg area... probably most acres I've seen for flowers in a long time.
Do you sell it by the bushel? Or how?
Flaxseed is per bushel
What was your bu per acre?
Disappointing, but not surprised from the year it was.

It's not easy, especially being thrown into it. Learn as you go, make notes.
