  • "What should I get as my first motorcycle?" is a question I hear all the time.
    The SV650 has been a long time underdog in the beginner bike class despite being a fantastic option for all kinds of riders. Previously a V-Twin, now L-Twin 645cc engine puts out a very useable amount of power.
    Priced at $7,400 USD for the non-ABS version this is a bike you may want to go check out. Come along as I ride the SV for the first time in about 10 years.

    I’m 61 and bought my ‘24 SV650 in March after not riding for over two decades. So far the bike has been absolutely brilliant. Did the big bike thing for to many years and just wanted something simple and fun. I chose the SV on history, price and simple layout. Where bikes like the Z650 are restricted for learners here in Australia the SV650 has both a learner restricted and unrestricted model which is what I bought. Am having heaps of fun with it and have even been setting it up for light touring. My only complaint is the 14litre fuel tank is a bit small and has only about a 260km range which so far has been a blessing in one way because I actually have to get off it sooner.

      Congrats on the new bike! I need to do more research on the differences in the restricted versions in other countries. My knowledge has only been based on US sold bikes, and even then, I don't often deal with California specific bikes with different emissions restrictions.
      Ride safe out there, and I hope the SV gives you many happy kilometers!

      @@alexdombi-weridetwo as far as Learner approved bikes go here in Australia states like where I live have a LAMS or learner approved motorcycle scheme where some bikes are restricted horsepower wise with a power to weight ratio of 150kw (201hp) per tonne and a top engine capacity of 660cc. Bikes like the Suzuki RGV250, the Kawasaki KL250, Honda NSR250, Yamaha TZR250 and Aprilia RS250 are banned for the LAMS. Hope that helps. Personally am thoroughly enjoying riding again and even more so now I’ve already dropped the bike and have stopped feeling so stressed. It was a simple low speed bone head mistake of going around a speed bump hitting a small pothole I didn’t see then a parked car. Fortunately the bike was ok. Anyway at present I’m watching as many videos that give riders tips and saw your video. Thanks again for sharing this video and your comments.

    The SV650 was the first brand new bike I ever bought. Bought the original in 1999, owned it until 2005 when I traded it in for the SV1000S. Thought the engine of the SV1000 was great, it just didn’t have the charm that the 650 did. I traded in the SV for GSXR1000 and then a Hayabusa. However, recently I find myself still missing the SV650. Started watching videos about newest ones, like yours, and am really close to pulling the trigger and having one again, as a second bike. They are just so much fun.

      Sometimes nostalgia gets the better of us and we buy things that we shouldn't. In the case of rebuying a loved motorcycle or one that has special meaning- yes, absolutely do it. I sold a 2003 Z1000 7 years ago and I regretted it immensely. If you've seen some of my more recent videos, you will see I rebought the same one. I'll never let it go now. If you have the ability to spend the money I doubt you'd regret buying the new one. Ride safe!

      @alexdombi-weridetwo of course. I bought the sv for 2nd bike.Sv is pure bike. 90s style no electronics v engine . Hornet is other bike.
      I wanted a retro style pure bike bit not retro like speed twin, v7 , rs. Something else. Sv is that I look for . Outdated but not outdated and always in time and style. I just booked. I wait for delivery the next 3 4 dates. Black with bronze frame and rims. Only this colour. Black and bronze. Timeless bike.

    Believe it or not, that Z650 is about 25 lbs *lighter* than the SV650. That full trellis frame that the SV650 uses adds some weight.

    z650 is way down on power compaired to the sv 650,and the sv can be improved by full exaust aftermarket hi flow air filter and a flash, mine runs 87 horse on the dyno

    • @alexdombi-weridetwo
      @alexdombi-weridetwo  16 дней назад

      87hp is pretty stout for those easy mods! The fact the SV is a v-twin vs the parallel twin of the Z650 is a major reason for that as well as higher torque numbers.

      Soft forks make for a more comfortable ride, but you do sacrifice handling to some extent.

    • @alexdombi-weridetwo
      @alexdombi-weridetwo  5 месяцев назад +1

      Ooh I haven't but that'd be a good comparison! There are some features that are better on the XSR, like inverted forks. The XSR is a parallel twin but has the crossplane crank so it might have better low end grunt like the SV does. I'll see if I can get my hands on one to test.

    I hate those ugly digital screens, I'm fine for small screen for trip info but fuel, and clocks should, in my opinion be analogue and standard and digital optional.

    • @alexdombi-weridetwo
      @alexdombi-weridetwo  3 месяца назад +1

      I've said for a long time that I prefer and analog tachometer to make me feel like I'm connected to the bike. Some of these digital screens are better than others, specifically the full color TFT ones. I loved the old SV screen with an analog tach and digital read out below it.

      I love everything about my 23 sv, but I wish it had a regular tachometer and not digital. Agreed. At least it's still throttle by cable. I bought this bike for the capability and simplicity. Wanted it for 15 years. Had several bikes, but the sv is my forever bike.
