    In Okinawan karate, we have a kata called Pinan Sandan, in which the Shoubie technique can be found. The interpretation of the kata isn't always taught the same way and often depends on the karate style and teacher, but if you analyse Pinan Sandan from a Shuai Jiao point of view, this particular movement in the kata makes so much more sense!

    Nice videos and very interesting topics coverd! IMHO you should work more on your rooting (since as I had experienced the Baoding system is based a lot on the Fa Li expressed in the Ji Ben Gong)... You're young so you can reach very high levels! Good work and stay safe!

    Great lesson & I definitely would like to learn more about the various rule sets, styles, terminology etc of Wrestling in Asia. Charles Nelson & Matt Furey used to promote Mongolian Wrestling (Bokh, Buku) & Shuai Jiao (Shuai-Chiao kung fu) in the USA mainly east coast to those involved with Judo, Sambo, & American Folk style Wrestling, which is how I was introduced to this art. I took a few classes and seminars then did a few tournaments.

    Interesting, I’ve done Baoding very briefly in NY under the Jeng Hsing Ping’s lineage. We first learned it as hand blocking the knee instead of the hip

    Good tutorials, do you also do commentary like "MMA Fight commentary" about modern wresting, roman or catch wrestling and do reviews of "historical" wrestling matches? Olympic, best of all time, youtube greatest and such?

    Very similar to tai otoshi in Judo. Really cool to see grappling in a different cultural context and how it manifests under a different rule set!

    • @the.wandering.warrior
      @the.wandering.warrior  2 года назад +2

      Yes, you could say that the 蹩/別 (bie) concept in Shuaijiao 摔角 is closest to Tai otoshi in judo

      I was thinking this too, though there are so many variations that he showed, some look closer to it than others.
      In some of them he had a good popping action with the leg that really sent his Uke over. I think this had the most overlap with Tai Otoshi.
      The others had a lot more twisting action at the waist, which while a valid technique, differentiate it from what I understand as proper tai otoshi form (which is a forward drop with bending at the waist, but no twisting).

    First Shuai Jiao move I was taught took me awhile to properly execute it. One observation I'll share that helped me understand the throw was the relation to the top and bottom of the opponents movement. Picturing a line running straight through your belt line as your mid point. With the top half moving within a certain trajectory and bottom half restricted from moving into a position to main balance and equilibrium on a parallel path its forced to follow the top of the midpoint rather than below. I'll picture a person as door and tipping it from one corner with my hand as it's fulcrum when I do it.

    Why use hand instead of leg to block leg?

    • @the.wandering.warrior
      @the.wandering.warrior  Год назад +2

      Think about it. Why shoot for single leg if you can just sweep? Why hip toss if you can lift and dump? When you use your leg, you commit a limb that usually helps you root and maintain stability and if you miscalculated you're very out of position. Using your hand gives you different options that doesn't come with the same set of pros and cons.
