This is just bull. First, if the dog was aggressive to people, she forgot to put it in her book. And the "attack" was the dog attacking chickens literally on the way home from a duck hunting trip. She didn't restrain a dog she already knew wasn't well trained.
I have put down dogs myself (at the vets, but I get why you would shoot it). Nothing about this seems like she was a responsible dog owner, and its incredibly creepy that she seems to ENJOY killing the dog. That's the real issue.

    • @boxerblake1
      @boxerblake1 Месяц назад +9

@MountainsBreath It's unfortunate. The fact that the dog was fairly young seems to be ignored. I've had my dog for over 2 years, and still need to correct behavior from time to time. Owning a dog is an ongoing process of training. Some are more difficult to train than others. If a person can't handle that, they shouldn't own a dog. I stand by my original statement.

“Oh, she shot a dog. How heartless!” … not going to argue, that’s a hell of a thing. People can argue all they like about whether or not it’s justified, and can be cognizant or not as to the difference between a household pet and a farm dog.
BUT - what does that have to do with political policy? What does this have to do with her qualifications as someone in government? This is basically a personal attack rather than a critique of her ability to govern, and we should really stop being distracted by it.

In those 12 years as a Home Health Nurse, I was dog bitten 5 times outside patient's homes. Twice was from the Damn neighbor's dogs. And they were bad bites too, that sent me to the Emergency Department. But the worst dog attack was inside the home of a patient. I was treating and dressing some diabetic sores on a man's legs, when his Dobermann Pinscher just attacked me out of nowhere and had me down on the floor biting my arms and face ! I had been to this house 4 times before and the dog had never even growled. But this time he meant business. The owner kept saying that I must have "done something" to cause the attack. I'm Australian and what I see here is ignorance of how life is living on the land,.
You don't seem to understand what a "working dog" is,. If they are killing live stock and are a danger to stock animals, and possibly any children living on that farm or cattle station, they have to go, there's no lollipop and rainbow land where a problem dog can be sent to be made into a loving puppy, you do what is most cost effective and humane, taking it to a vet is not cost effective or even practical, especially when you are on very remote land like we have here in Australia. Neither is locking the dog in a cage until you can have a vet come to the property at a very high cost to "put it to sleep".
Some of the farm stations that are privately owned are as large as some of your states in the US. It's a fact of life living on cattle stations and city people just have no clue as to how that steak gets to their plate and this is part of that.

But to put him down, FOR THAT, that's BS. OLD YELLER got put down since he was RABID, if that was the case with this dog, it would make sense. Since again, she has a valid point that when you're that remote and away from everything, sometimes you have to be the vet also and as such make that decision to put the dog down. This was a bad call on her and her family's part.

But, being a multi dog owner, raised on a farm, what she said sickened me. My admiration for her has plummeted.
I think she shows REALLY POOR judgement in this regard.
The dog was her kid's pet. It wasn't a puppy, per se, but still very young and energetic. Not all dogs are meant for hunting, or herding, etc.
Her young age (only 14 mos ) means she had plenty of time to be retrained, turned into a pet, or rehomed.
As far as aggressive/dangerous...she was chasing CHICKENS--which most energetic young dogs will do.
Why wasn't she on a leash?
She SNAPPED at Kristie, supposedly, when she grabbed her while she was in an excited state of chasing chickens. Doesn't mean the dog's a killer.
But Kristie obviously is....her goat found that out later in the same day. Ugh.

We are farmers. Having to put down an animal that is too old or too severely injured to be helped is one thing. And even that is hard! But what she did is pretty heartless. We would never even think about shooting a healthy young dog, unless it was actively in the process of attacking one of our pets or a child, and there was no other way to stop it. Kristi showed a rather brutal impatience, not "toughness" on her part.
Note that we adopted a young untrained hunting dog that got ahold of one of my peacocks and killed it by catching it (which is likely what this dog did with the neighbor's chickens). I was sad about it, but it was not his fault. Not a "massacre". Just instinctual. Once we worked with him he was fine around our farm birds and learned what he needed to do when hunting game birds. Also, become a much beloved pet.

Sure I had tears in my eyes and cried when I did it but I couldn't bear to see the dog suffer like that. But her cold demeanor and emotionless description of the incident does not make me think that this was something that was a last resort to save the lives of others and to end the animal's suffering. Naturally I do not have the opportunity to vote for her, but honestly nothing said in this video has done anything but peak my interest. Perhaps there is more, of which I do not know, but my first reaction to her is respect.
On the other hand, your own reaction and your argument, or lag thereof, does quite the opposite. This makes me rather sad to be honest.
I am perhaps not a dog person, but I do sort have a dog, together with my ex and coincidentally, it is not more than a couple of days ago that the neighbors rottweiler was on the lose, again, and wanted to kill my ex and our dog, again, because of some bitch in high heat, again. My ex and our dog, why but the way, for reasons quite incomprehensible, eats that rottweiler for lunch every time the opportunity present itself, only barely managed to avoid a severe confrontation and naturally couldn't leave the house afterwards, knowing that the dog was still out and about. The police would do nothing, unless the dog was actually caught, which is just plain moronic, and ya, I was the only one available for the job.
It found the dog, put it on a leash, and for the first time had the opportunity to meet it, not being some out of hand situation, and it is actually a really nice dog and infinitely more well behaved that out own. This dog does not deserve death, the owner does. This however does not change the fact that the police should not have hesitated to get their asses on their way and shoot the beast, nor that my ex, or me for that matter, in the hypothetical scenario that any of us had a license for a gun, should be able to do the same with no repercussions. This is not the world we live in, not in Denmark at least, but it should be. I hesitate to say that the same should go for the owner, but really, it should. She is barking mad.
The point of this story is not that it is really all that relevant, just that I am not insensitive, one way or the other. I love our dog dearly, and would very much like to excuse the neighbors, because it is insanely dangerous. Yes, that is the truth. I know only of that one episode, but once that dog pulverized the jaw of a vet without meaning to. Pure reflex, and that was just a matter of it being groggy from anesthesia and the vet a bit too... ehm, brave. I don't care how nice that dog is, could I do it without risking God knows what, I would kill that dog in an instant. frankly I have been very tempted to do so regardless.
Now, am I a terrible person for saying such things? Does my honesty not deserve respect? Are my conclusions really all that unreasonable?
I for one do not think so, but then again, I am not a dog person...
