    Sorry to hear about your loss Farmer Girl Jessie. Do not give up. Contact RADA and PERSIAN for advise on what chemicals you are to use to control certain insects. You also need to do crop rotation, the professionals will tell you that you shouldn't plant the same crop at the same spot continually. You have to rotate the crops. I would also suggest that since those cabbages are so heavily infested, when you pull them out, you may need to treat the area before replanting anything there. All the very best Jessie.❤

      Too much chemicals in the earth is the problem.
      There are no nutrients left in the earth, all the plants have to feed on is synthetic fertilizer.
      Now that the rain is not falling, the soil is dried out and the plants cannot take up the feed.
      Organic farming is a far more sustainable way to go.
      It is a little more challenging to start organic farming, but once you get started, it's almost like clockwork.
      She should compost all that vegetables that she lost and create good organic fertilizer.
      Make and spread good compost on the soil and make it come alive again.
      Spread mulch on the land to hold in the moisture so that when it doesn't rain, the soil doesn't dry out so fast.
      Stop doing slash and burn, it is a very bad and destructive farming practice. And for the sake of the planet and your health, stop investing in chemicals to poison the earth.

    This is where RADA should be helpful... helping all of us farmers to develop expertise to address these problems. Cabbage can be a really hard crop because of the care required. All the Agriculture ministers throw words but do very little to address the real problems small farmers face. I am a farmer also, so I know exactly what you are feeling. The problem is the MInister/Ministry of Agriculture and RADA... their shortsightedness is destroying us in the long run because their inputs are outdated and often irrelevant....

    There is a pest called the "diamondback moth" and another called "budworm" that creates damage in cabbage like these. Try to plant a mixed crop in the space, not just all of one crop. It helps with pest management and provides a buffer if one crop fails. You can also plant marigold, green onion, chives among the plants to help control pests. I don't like seven dust but spinosad works and is gentler.

      I would suggest companion planting. Monocropping makes target for pests. Interplant with herbs like dill, thyme, sage oregano and flowers like chamomile to ward off some pests like cabbage worm and white flies and mulch to help with drought because the climate issues of the world will cause more drought conditions. I grow cabbage and kale in my backyard and I get pests but minimal damage.

  • @beasttitan8747
    @beasttitan8747 7 месяцев назад +2

    I would suggest these things from a farmer to another;
    1. Cabbage are heavy feeders, you would need to plough the area and scatter bags of fowl manure or fersan fertilizer. It has to have nitrogen and phosphorus, cabbage will drain the soil of these nutrients especially if you plan on planting in the same area more than once.
    2. Try making a row for your cabbage field, might seem hard and a waste of time to many but what it does is offer more efficient delivery of pesticides and water to the plants. The rows also help to hold more moisture as oppose to planting like that.
    3. Pesticides Indicarb and Refas - plant celerly in between the cabbage rows or thyme to help control cabbage worms. This would be how you get 3 crops in the same field by planting in rows. Cornmeal and flour is basically a little trick on the side. If you can just flash it in the evening after rainfall over them and it's cheap for the early stages of growth. You will need a battery backpack sprayer for this, not expensive, something that gets the job done.
    4. Build a watering hole, have you ever gone to the farm when it rains heavily? normally during rainfall water might rush to a particular location. Dig it out and create a little pond for yourself to take water from. Sorry that you sold your car, that is a bread and butter for farmers.

  • @karensterling5246
    @karensterling5246 7 месяцев назад +1

    Wow! That’s a devastating loss. Many people have already said what I am thinking.
    The first problem is that you’ve planted a monoculture field of cabbage. It’s like an all you can eat buffet for cabbage pests. You showed the damage to the plants but I wonder if you have identified whatever is destroying them.
    Don’t give away all of those cabbages. Even though they aren’t profitable financially you can make compost piles and allow them to breakdown into rich soil amendments.
    You mentioned using pesticides as well and that is one of the worse things that you can do. It has been proven time and time again that pesticides destroy soil life. Check your soil for beneficial insects. If you don’t find any then you know for sure that the crops aren’t getting proper nutrients. Plants and people are the same in that if they are healthy they can overcome illness quickly. But, if they are unhealthy then they are more prone to getting infected. Feed your soil with compost and if you can get good quality manure from a reputable source then do so. Compost holds on to water and if you mulch the soil then you’ll have less evaporation which leads to less frequent water use.
    It will take time but it will pay off in the long run. I wish you the best in your future farming and nursing endeavors. God Bless!!!

Jessie you could learn how to make coldslaw, kimchi or other things that can be made with cabbage. Do waste the cabbage, you have learn how turn your hand, and make fashion. Do your own research. Cutting down trees or not a good idea. You need the trees for rainfalls. You need to harvest ashes from coalskill to use as fertilizer or the white vinegat to spray them. I am happy that Shan Shendhen highlight you. Keep Up the Good Work. Blessings.

    • @blackbway
      @blackbway 7 месяцев назад

      Not a fire, i don't believe she should do that.
      Use them to make compost, real organic fertilizer.
      Ash only contains a small amount of potassium, potassium is mostly needed for flowers and fruit. Compost contains large amounts of nitrogen. Nitrogen is necessary and needed for plant growth.
      If the plant grows healthy and strong, it will be pest resistant and will bare good, healthy food.
      It is time for Jamaican farmers start learning organic farming and leave that old destructive way of farming with so much chemicals and synthetic fertilizer that is killing the very life that is needed to grow the crops in the first place.

    You need to get a Plant Pathologist to take a look at the farm. Do some soil testing, you could also try to find out what kind of pests are causing the problem and trying to see if you can plant some resistant varieties to those pests. Fumigation and Solarization is an option that you can use, it will cost you but better in the long run. You can also trying crop rotation this will also help to mitigate the pathogens that are occurring.

    Happy Women's DAY!!
    The great thing Jess you have experience, try to figure what plants you can plant inbetween your crops that keep pests away.
    Jess the biggest project needed on your farm now is harvesting water sustainably (So much of the precious liquid goes untapped).
    Are farmers allowed to access ground water? A borehole would solve that issue.
    Jah know when mi come home mi personally will give a day or two on your farm (An wi can run boat and laugh lol). Hang in there Queen...
    As for pest control, are there plants that can be planted that are natural detterent for some pests or plants that will attract a certain insect that will kill the ones that target your crops.
