@Summer Rain This is fair yet not 100% true. The scammers most often steal military peoples photos to use in romance scams. The military people whose photos are stolen then used as pazrt of a romance scam are also the victims.
Having known as well as currently know many current & former military people, I have known some scumbags, while I have known more decent ones than anything.
The same can be said of people who are in a position of trust. Politicians, Pastors, Cops, Teachers, Doctors. Just to name a few of the positions held who have been exposed as committing horrible crimes against people who trusted them.

Sounds like every time the family were asking too many questions about where he was and why he wasn't coming back, the messages turned suicidal and then they'd be happy messages again. There's a pattern of control most people would notice.

Theres 5 parts so far that I can see. At the end of part 1 there was a box on the screen that if you click in it, will take you right to part 2 (that's how I got to this one), and I'm assuming at the end of each part there is the same type of box ("box" meaning like a small version of the thumbnail to the next one) to take you to the next Part. 🤷♀️
