    35 is my favorite focal length too. Great points on ‘the feel’ and how buying a quality product can really influence your abilities. I started with the first Canon 35/1.4L and had that for almost a decade. Looking forward to saying the same about this GM ten years from now as well!

    Totally agree with this video. I used to be a Nikon shooter. Had tons of 35mm except for the 1.4G. In the end, it actually cost me more to get all the manual lenses+ two of their cheap AF lenses. It also didn’t give me enough satisfaction and always chasing for the 1.4g look. I had tons of cheaper lenses that it was always a hassle on which one to pick up. This went on with all their focal lengths. 10 years later I’m with my Sony a7siii with only the 20mm and the 35mm just arrived. Next will be the 14mm. When I pick up my 20mm, I’m super satisfied, same with my 35GM. For some, shooting with cheaper alternatives is a good way to hone their creativity before upgrading. I’m just done with that. I’ve been shooting for about 15 years and it’s time to treat myself with only the best equipment even though I’m not a pro.

      Thanks for the awesome insight, Erick. I really love the 20mm and 34mm GMs. Can’t wait to hear about the 14mm. Let me know how you like it. Your line up of lenses seem perfect for the A7SIII - I bet the photos and videos are 👌🏽.

    Man… your whole pitch about the ‘upgrade itch’ struck close to home haha… I own the 35mm 1.8 and mostly take photos of my wife and daughters which it does admirably! But I have now realized when it comes to tech, I find myself always lusting after the top tier product in its category. You’re the first RUclips to have said this and it made complete sense to me.
    Thanks for the great video, I subbed 😁

    • @ItsDesmond
      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад +1

      Hey Marco! Appreciate the comment and sub. Yeah - tech and gadgets lol it’s such a slippery slope 🤣 with gear, especially camera gear, I think it ultimately comes down to what is going to be the most enjoyable experience for you and your personal style. I knew that 35mm would be my most commonly used focal length so going with the GM made sense. In stark contrast - I went with a much cheaper 24-70mm Sigma Art vs the 24-70 GM, again know that I probably wasn’t going to carry that lens around as often.
      Any other lenses you’ve been thinking about picking up?

    • @marcoschram222

      @@ItsDesmond I really love the 35mm focal length so I was debating either upgrading to the 35 GM or adding the 20mm 1.8G to my kit and keep the 35mm 1.8… I think the 20mm route will make my kit a lot more versatile than switching out my 35 1.8 for the GM version but still undecided haha

      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад

      Ohh a 135mm would be pretty cool to add to my kit. I don’t shoot that much with telephotos these days. But I’ve definitely been considering maybe a telephoto zoom for some adventure stuff.
      Do you use the 135 a lot with family or kid shoots? Any recommendations on how you like to use that focal length?

    Do you feel this will replace your 55mm or can you see yourself bringing both around? I have the 35 and tempted to get a 50 with it, but not sure if the difference in focal length is worth it.

    • @ItsDesmond
      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад +1

      That’s a good question. I don’t think it can replace my 55mm for a few reasons. First is that the 55 really does have this dreamy, and just naturally artistic “look”. It’s one of those lenses that has a distinct style to it. So I really love that - but with the said, I know when I’m trying to get those more compressed portrait shots and that’s when I’ll plan to bring my 55.
      With that said - I usually just carry my 35mm with me if I’m doing something and only want one lens. I can still punch in with super 35 mode and get a 50mm equivalent focal length.. but it still looks different than my 55mm Zeiss.
      I definitely see situations where I would carry both. Especially because the 55mm is just so small and compact. It honestly takes up very little space. It even fits in my 3L sling when I have my 35mm as well. I recently bought a new sling bag that holds slightly more and now having the 35mm + 55mm (and more) is an even easier carry option.

    • @krisco
      @krisco 3 года назад +1

      @@ItsDesmond great points. I rock the 35/85 combo which is great for the most part, but sometimes I want compression in spaces where the 85mm is too long and I can't back up. Been back and forth on adding a 50mm since it's so close to 35mm. As a fellow dad you'd understand I'm on a quest to carry the smallest bag around with the least amount of lens to swap between, so i'm torn on adding another lens haha.

    • @ItsDesmond
      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад +1

      @@krisco haha I definitely know that feeling. I’m mostly down to a one or two lens carry at this point. But that combo almost always includes the 35mm. If you’re looking for that middle ground - I really think the 55mm is worth it. The images are incredible and I even use it for cinematic b roll. But the size to performance ratio is incredible. It’s such a tiny lens. The other option..and I’m sure you’re already checking it out...is the new 50mm 1.2...that in my opinion might be a bit over kill for another GM so close to the 35mm GM focal length. So I’m thinking a cheaper 50\55 might be a good middle ground.
      Have you considered going standard zoom? 24-70mm is another solid 1 lens for everything. But it’s pretty big though - I’ll usually carry this one lens if we do family trips to the Zoo or somewhere that’s more of a day trip - that way I have one lens that ready for anything. Usually I’ll just load that 24-70 with my A7RIV in a tiny Peak Design 3L sling and its like the perfect combo for basically every kind of shot.

    • @krisco
      @krisco 3 года назад

      @@ItsDesmond Yup i've owned a 24-70, but i'm more of a prime guy myself.

  • @senorbuddL24
    @senorbuddL24 3 года назад +1

    Uh oh… I see the new 50 ƒ1.2 in your future now. 😁 I agree about putting on bigger glass on the RIV, especially one that’ll stay with you for a lifetime like a GM. I like your videos but wish this one included some sample photos and videos, like the other ones. That lens excels at both 👌🏼

      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад +1

      Lol thanks, Budd! Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. I’ll definitely be putting out another video in the near future with some photo and video samples from the 35mm GM. Planning to do a “Primes” video and should have a lot more photos and videos shot on that 35mm by then.

    man I'm stuck between trying to secure a 16-35 gm or trying this lens out.

    • @ItsDesmond
      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад +1

      oh damn! That is such a tough decision...I was also really looking into the 16-35 GM especially because of how much I've been moving into the world of video - it would be perfect for my FX3. BUT I already bought a 20mm 1.8G and I have the 24-70mm 2.8. If I didn't buy the 20mm...I probably would have bought the 16-35m for versatility. The only downside about that lens - is the same with any zoom...Size and the f2.8 aperture. If those don't matter much - getting all that 16-35mm focal range is worth it.

    • @TheSneakerCircle
      @TheSneakerCircle 3 года назад

      @@ItsDesmond I'll take that into consideration. Right now I use the zeiss 55mm & the 24mm GM so maybe a zoom might be a nice in between.

    • @ItsDesmond
      @ItsDesmond  3 года назад +1

      @@TheSneakerCircle ohhh the 24mm GM is 🔥 . Yeah - would definitely consider the 16-35mm if that's the case. The 24mm and the 35mm GM are pretty similar in every way except focal length - BUT the 24mm also has little to no distortion, which means you could still get up close shots + crop to 35mm. My 20mm is much too distorted to use in the same way I would the 24 GM.

    For a nifty-fifty the Samyang 45mm is the best option bro, amazing performance, good AF for a mirrorless lens and not have to worry to throw around unlike the GM 50mm lol
