01:25 "...kind of a buzzword for when you want to cover up a lens' interesting optical deficiencies" is a phrase that needs to appear a lot more often in photo reviews. Thank you, Chris!
Nice and to the point. I don't get why people who watch a good RUclips review don't like it. Thousands of viewers, a couple of hundred likes. Most probably did like it. Even if one isn't crazy about it, liking it is a small price to pay ($0) to acknowledge the work of the reviewer and one's getting the service. One pays for a meal and leaves a tip every time one eats out. At least I hope they do.
Never noticed that you guys were in Calgary lol only figured it out due to recognizing Ralph Klein park which is 5 min drive for me and ya glad you did this review as it will be one 2 new lenses I pick up in the near future.
I have only recently begun to take my journey into photography more seriously. I have the Sony 20-70mm F4 and often shoot at 35mm. I’m looking to buy my first (and hopefully, only) prime lens that I will use for ever. This has been really helpful.
Chris, I must admit I hear you man, I have a 35mm myself which is mostly collecting dust as I prefer the 28 or the 50/55 myself. But can you guys talk about this particular focal length pointing out YOUR view of pros & cons of a 35mm lens (FF format that is). I'm glad to hear that you're on the same wavelength Chris!
Thanks for such detailed review, i am using Sony FX3, comparing Sony 35 1.4 GM and Sony 35 1.8 for video shooting and film making purpose only. If I don’t mind the focus breathing issue on GM, just considering the video image quality. Does these 2 lenses make any noticeable differences? Someone tell me the video image on FX3 is only 4K 10bit so on video I would hardly notice any differences, but I would like to buy GM if it does perform any better on video image quality. Thanks
Question? I’ve just recently have been seeing results of my shoots at 1.4 .. thinking that eye auto focus will have me covered. But no so much, standing maybe 7-10 feet away. Images look fine at first glance, but once zoomed in face or eyes are not tack sharp.. any suggestions for 1.4 portraits
Nice one. I like this 35mm F1.4 but would you agree that this lens has some vignetting at all 4 corners? I notice this strongly when taken on a bright day with a blue sky.
Does the breathing take you out of focus if you're just using AF? If it stays in focus and just shifts focal length, I can live with that. That's what I'm attempting to figure out.
Thanks for comparing it with the old FE35zeiss.. i still have that and wondering if I should change because 35 is my go to lens... Meanwhile... Still waiting for a new version of RX1... or they stop working on that line already.. COme on Sony..
I happen to love the 35mm focal length and noticed that Chris overlooked the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm 1.4 AF during his rundown of 35mm, fast, full-frame, Sony options. I own the Samyang and for roughly half the price of this G-Master it is worth considering. However, I suspect that the AF is better on the Sony lens and I am considering switching to the Sony 35, 1.8 because it is absolutely tiny compared to the Samyang.
@@dakunclear My copy of the Samyang 35, f1.4 makes a very quiet ticking sound as it focuses. Usually 3 or 4 ticks in rapid succession. I cannot hear it if the camera is at waist level, but as I bring my head closer to the lens I can hear it. It is not too bad and I would not worry about it disturbing anyone other than myself. I find that the AF works really well in video mode which is a major selling point for me. It racks beautifully and stops with precision. If I were doing event photography for a living I would probably consider a native Sony lens as an alternative mostly for the slight accuracy bump, but the AF is still pretty impressive especially for a third-party, E mount lens.
You forgot the Sigma 35mm 1.2. Which I actually bought about 2 months ago. Not foreseeing this lens being released. "Kick self here". I shouldn't complain. Super happy with the "Bigma". Would like to see a comparison though. Might also help with your silhouette Chris. ;)
Afaik it's a range of focal lengths that give you that impression. I f you say normal = picture diagonal, the answer for full frame is 42 ;-) No kidding, that's very close, 43.3mm or 28mm on APS, which makes 50mm (or 35 on APS) a bit too long. To me 28mm (or 18mm on APS) is a bit of no mans land. Too wide if something is a bit away and not wide enough to fool around with wide angle look.
The Canon PowerShot Zoom is a wonderful concept for us birders who never want to miss a shot even though we don't always want to drag our heavy gear around.
When Chris mentioned that there was no other alternatives for a fast 35mm, he was forgetting Sigma’s 35mm f1.2, which was natively designed for mirrorless (as opposed to being adapted from the DSLR models)
Weights half less, much smaller... that miiight be the biggest deal. The gm is the one to go if you ask me (unless you can only rely in blowing all the space on the image to make a "good" picture)
Is this a good lens for video? I’m recording product reviews. I saw on another review someone said this is for photography and I notice your talking a lot about that.
When I saw 35mm and E-mount I thought sony finally put a competitor out to the Sigma 30mm contemporary... Surprised me it was about a fullframe lens. I like 35mm equivalent, but I prefer zooms anyways...
Don't pile onto the Canon PowerShot Zoom too hard. Those of us who are into birding and wildlife but don't always want to carry our "real" camera gear with us appreciate something pocketable but with a long zoom lens. I just wish it played nicer with phones. It's an interesting concept even if the execution is imperfect.
I think it's still a bit of a tough sell when the Sigma 35mm f1.2 exists for the same relative price... That said, if size/weight are important this looks pretty appealing.
Agree. I also noticed that DPReview seems to skip Rokinon/Samyang lenses. They have a good number of AF primes for E-mount cameras. These are far from perfect, but they appeal to many hobbyists.

In talking about Sigma, how did you miss the 35 1.2, the one that was built native for FE and not just a DSLR adapted version like the Sigma 1.4? I know you're talking about 1.4s, but can't see any reason why the new GM is being talked about as affordable, when its priced the same as the as the faster and stunningly sharp Simga 1.2

I'm not a big fan of the 35mm either -which is why my Samyang 45mm is my favorite Sony lens bar none. (Speaking as a Canon shooter)
Soon.. RF 35 1.2. canon: hold my beer
Hold my warm, alcohol-free (i.e. crippled) beer 🤣
I wish there’d be more 40mm lenses.
Me too. Absolutely love that focal length, the batis 40 is 🔥🔥🔥
I read that Nikon has a small 40mm prime on their lens roadmap.
@@jochenkraus7016 probably f2.8 not super exciting but good for Z users. I gave up on Nikon long ago and they’d need a compact 40mm 1.8 to get me even remotely interested in that system. Their standard f1.8 primes in the Z line are all too big for what they are, they forgot that mirrorless should be at least a little smaller than DSLR stuff. To each their own I won’t diss Nikon users but the company is lacking in vision
@@vincentrivera I’d totally go for it if I’d be a Sony shooter.
@@VariTimo same, I switched from Sony to Fuji but I miss that lens
Dont go to jail. Ask Sony to send another copy. Great review.
The joke with Sony Zeiss lenses must end. Sony doesn't need Zeiss.
I want a review on Chris’s fantastically fantastic hair.
Not expensive?
I don't why but I hate cat eye bokeh. Why sony lenses seems always to have that?
I love putting a 35mm on my crop sensor camera!
I was thinking the same thing... if Sony ever got around to updating their Super 35-format cameras, this lens would make a nice normal focal length...
Guys! If you want more subscribers you need to ask for them in every video! I'm a fan of yours from the TCSTV days and would love for you to kick butt on RUclips. I'm rooting for you to hit 300k!
