If you watch Freddie at Live Aid, when it got to We Are The Champions, the last one they did, Freddie's voice cracked near the end. But he had been told by a doctor not to do the show due to a throat infection. Saying that though, he blew everybody away and people still talk about how they stole the show. And they really did.

It's a shame that America, by the time this amazing concert was performed, Queen had long ceased touring the U.S. for years already....Album sales from them dropped like a rock Stateside, and I partially blame the American media, especially the VERY influential music channel of it's day, MTV, essentially permanently banning ALL of Queen's music vids from 'I Want To Break Free' on forward, all the way to the VERY END of Queen's career with Freddie, basically orchestrating a media blackout of all their stuff. Oh yes I recall those days clearly...As America was immersed in music vids from Phil Collins, U2, The Police, Michael Jackson, etc. Queen was ruling the rest of the World.

I wish I could sing with my voice strained like this, all the touring and singing must have been such a strain so to give a great performance like this he had to change tones, breath, range ect. Freddie's bad singing is what most singers aspire to for their great singing.. Save me and Somebody to love, live at the Milton Keynes bowl 1982 are a tour de force of singing, well any concert will do.

Take in count that this is live not studio what all that include (excitement crowd, not a studio, etc) and they been on tour so the voice maybe is "tired"

what people don't understand is this; the strain and damage to his voice is precisely what gives him his unique tone and distortion. It is almost inimitable. It is a choice that some singers make, they go for power and passion and it comes with great reward but also a cost. I see in almost every live performance on youtube 'he has a cold/aids/is sick, that's why he is straining here...' No, he's just straining. He strained himself because he was damaged from years of touring, partying and pushing his voice to the limits for us. His younger voice was more agile with less effort required, as he aged he developed a better tone, more rasp and power at the expense of some of that agility. That is the effect of age, use and abuse of the voice. He simply couldn't sing like the record, he adapted by belting rather than flipping into head voice seamlessly as he did previously. It is stylistic as well as practical. Its beautiful and its bittersweet, especially with this song

This being the Wembley concert (not sure if it's the first or second night)... it was the (almost) end of a looong GRUELING concert tour. I've noticed, listening to the earlier-in-the-tour Budapest concert, that his voice was still in much better condition then.
And I think at this point, Freddie was more focused on just enjoying himself with the audience.💕

Even though I did enjoy the studio version and Freddie using the piano, this live version that Freddie sang and Brian played guitar on was next level. Freddie had raw emotion here and every note he sang reflected it. Brian's simple acoustic guitar was just beautiful and meshed with Freddie's vocals. Freddie Mercury was the best vocal singer and performer to ever grace a stage. Great reaction!

Freddie had a problem with nodules on his larynx and throat infections. Sometimes when they were on tour he had to push his voice and of course, most of Queens songs were difficult to sing. He told Brian, "you write songs that just shred my voice."

@@Potatopot724 First of all, EVERYONE pales next to Freddie. As far as Roger and Brian go you really cant compare their voices as they are so vastly different...Roger has a raspy growly voice perfect for a little harder material (Modern Times Rock and Roll, Im in love with my Car) where as Brian has a soft melodic voice perfect for the more gentle tunes ('39, Sail away sweet sister). So no I dont think Brian pales next to Roger, they are just to different to compare

This concert was at the end of a long tour. Freddie's vocal nodules were really flaring up. He was completely hoarse the morning of this performance and his doctor advised him to cancel. So he's at about 30% yet still sounds pretty good.

He had to push. A stadium the size of Wembley! Roger Taylor said recently that they knew bands died out there because they were too quiet. That’s how Freddie grabs attention and holds it was with his power. On record you can have all the technique you like. For example Lily of the valley is a beautiful song but it would be hard to transfer that over to a live show at somewhere the size of Wembley

I followed Queen on this tour through a number of European cities and, of course, this was the homecoming weekend when his voice was a bit tired. It was still magical being there. This was supposed to be their biggest shows of that huge tour but a short while later they put on an even bigger one up the road at Knebworth. It was a bit wild and their last with him. I crashed the car on the way home because I fell asleep at the wheel. Happy days.
