    I can understand this for those iPhone users that may look to keep their iPhones for very long periods. But for the Average Joe / Jane, this really doesn't matter that much. As long as you don't leave the phone on charge for hours at an end, it'll cause no issues.
    I've had more or less every flagship Android & iPhone since the Galaxy Note & iPhone 3GS days; always charged them to anywhere between 90-100% and never had any issues, at all; and that included running them hard for days at a time and then keeping the charge levels up to the max etc

    • @FioDavid767
      @FioDavid767 2 года назад +5

      Of course, no one would have that problemif they get every flagship 😂

      Again bullshit, phone stop pumping electricity to battery once it's reached maximum soc. It does not do anything if you leave your phone on charger for years.

    • @maaax1173
      @maaax1173 Год назад

      Of course you won‘t have an issue if you buy flagships yearly lmfao.
      It‘s impossible to torture your battery that much in just one year. It‘s easy in two or three years though.
      Just pull the cable out at 80% and plug it in at 20% and you’re good. If it charges to 100% over night, don’t worry, if it drops below 20% once in a while, don’t worry. Just don’t let it happen regularly
      There‘s people that act like you need to devote your entire life to keeping your battery healthy when it’s just a matter of not being too lazy to plug and unplug the phone

  • @ThomasEJohnson
    @ThomasEJohnson 2 года назад +31

    As others have pointed out, this is only important if you plan to keep your phone/device for 5 or more years. For people upgrading ever 1-2 years keeping the device under 80% is more of a hassle and handicap than a benefit. Power users need to have a fully charged battery often to get through the day, and would prefer to be plugged in as often as they can so they don’t have to worry about it, as well as to not go through charge cycles, which has way more of an impact on your battery health than being over 80% for any amount of time.

    • @Larimuss
      @Larimuss Год назад +3

      I don’t know most iPhones I support 3+ years start getting bad. But it’s true most people don’t keep their phone for more than 3 years.

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 Год назад +1

      I don't think it's even important at that point. There's nothing inherently bad about charging your phone to 100%
      . It stops taking a charge anyways at that point. This is an old legacy problem that is no longer relevant.
      It's a myth arguably but as best it's hotly contested and there's no consensus as to whether it provides any benefit at all.

    • @maaax1173
      @maaax1173 Год назад +4

      There‘s no disadvantage to just pulling out the cable at 80% if it‘s not a major inconvenience, even if you upgrade every 1 or 2 years.
      Sure, if you need to charge over night, just let it charge to 100%, but why not prolong the battery lifespan if it‘s as easy as pulling out the cable when you‘re awake?

    • @maaax1173
      @maaax1173 Год назад +2

      @@michaelcorcoran8768 The point isn‘t that it overcharges when it reaches 100%, but that extreme charges, low or high, on a Li-Ion Battery isn‘t good for it‘s long-time ability to keep the max capacity. There‘s no way around it, charging to 100%, while not destroying the battery, is worse than only charging to 80%.
      Draining it to below 20% is still the worst

    Swapping a new battery costs $60! In my opinion, even if you charge to 100 for two years, the phone is gonna still be good! I’ll pay $60 after 2-3 years of use and not stress about anything!

    • @maaax1173
      @maaax1173 Год назад

      It‘s worse for the environment, and if you can prolong the lifespan of the battery easily, why not do it.
      Just take it off the charger at 80% and start charging it at 30%, it‘s that easy.
      If you think there‘s enough time in the morning to get to your charge (eg. 85%) target from where you are now (e.g. 70%), pull the cable out before going to sleep and plug it back in right after waking up. Then pull it out when you’re at the targeted amount.
      If you let it charge to 100% over night that‘s fine too, just try to avoid it.
      Really not a lot of work and it‘s very effective

    On my iPhone 13 Pro, I created an automation in Shortcuts to alert me with a 1 second timer and notification to unplug it when my battery equals 80%.
    It’s also beneficial since you can take a nap/sleep, and not be worried about it either.
    I don’t charge my phone above 80% ever.

    For my phone, graph of charging (time / percent charged) is a straight line from 0 to ~90%, but above that every next percent takes longer than the previous one, exponential.
    Maybe iphones start exponentioal charging at 80% (if its true) because they overcharge the battery, the 100% is set on higher voltage. Maybe they can get away with that using higher quality battery, or maybe they want the battery to die faster, searching for "optimal" life time.

    This was helpful but you left out that while having optimized battery charging “on” yes the battery will charge throughout the night to 80% and it will hold there, BUT about an hour before you normally wake up which the system will learn by your wake up routine, the battery does the final charge to 100% hence the reason you wake up to a fully charged device. I personally feel that its a good option and also a useless option. I say this because I have an iPhone Xs that I charged every night with optimized battery charging turned on for 1 year and the battery health went down to 98%. Did the same thing with an iPhone 11 pro max with the feature enabled off and battery health dropped to 97%. So yes the feature I guess works in that 1% difference but personally as of right now I have it turned off. I like my device to charge the most it can at any point througout the day. Every experience is different but anyways useful content. 👍🏼

      It's most likely because you have been using your phone during the night. If the phone learns that you do actually use the phone at night it will carry on charging to 100% so that it's ready for use. The other possibility is that it stops at 80% during the night and you don't notice ... because the charging kicks in again to bring it to 100% just before you wake. The feature isn't intended to leave your phone at 80% all the time, it just ensures that it is not left at 100% for many hours.

      even if you charge to 100% ... the time it wuld take for the battery to show any loss of battery life is so long that you will change the phone before that even happens... obviously if you want to keep the phone for longer than 5 years then it can be a problem(not really a problem just a loss of maybe of 30min-1h of screen on time) but you will weardown that phone before you weardown the battery

    I was following this for a while with my iphone 12. . I had an automation to play music when the battery charge hits 85%. But there is a problem. My iphone 12 is 2 years old now. I tried charging to 100% and test the life of the battery,i did it for the last 2 weeks now. The battery health is 90%. but the battery drains faster like I'm getting 3 hours of screen on time and my battery percentage is 30% when i close my day. So technically I shouldn't let my battery drain below 25%. And to have a fully charged battery only stand 3 hours on time is not a practical case. May be my battery learned to be on that 85% way all throughout and now it's not working well with a 100% charge? I don't know..
    With that being said with my experiments last 2 years, i would recommend using your battery to the fullest. Don't let your battery drain below 25%, but charge it to 100%, keep an automation to play music when the battery reaches 100%, just don't keep it plugged in when it reaches 100%.

    It's not only from this companys, that's in everything that uses battery's.
    I was reading about that long time ago, you can get 9000 charge cycles and probably more if you stay between 20%-25% and 80% charge. It's like a athletic runner, if he would train 100% the time he would die also earlier.
    Thats why stress is a big problem for health in everything not only people.

      Exactly, give us the option to limit the charging. And not to a locked value in typical Apple fashion, but to a custom one.

    • @MrAdopado
      @MrAdopado Год назад +4

      This is incorrect. The issue is not "overcharging". The phone knows when it is at 100% and cuts off the charging process. This is why your phone is at 100% but not hot despite being connected to the charger. The issue is simply that lithium ion batteries will generally last longer if kept between 20 and 80 percent.

      Keep the port and the cable and clean, don’t be rough with it and you should be able to get about 3 batteries worth of use out of that charging port.
      I’ve had 3 battery replacements, wore them all out after 5+ years of heavy use and the charging port was just starting to show it’s age, occasionally I would have to nudge the cable in a different direction to make it charge. All cables did this.

      I’ve been stressing over my iPhone 11s battery for the longest and I’m too eager to have it replaced for a better battery but then again I’m worried about if I get ripped off with an even worst battery than the capacity on the one I have right now plus it’s at 87 capacity and it drops one percent every less than to exactly 10 minutes that I use it which to me feels not as great because when it was newer I used to get more time of use on it everyday now I have to limit when I use it and that’s not how it should be I feel like my phone just isn’t enjoyable as it use to be like that but I’m one to blame for leaving it in harsh weather conditions without the proper protection and I also closed apps all of the time before so I’m one to blame for why my phone is not so good anymore as it use to be not only that I also used to use my phone til it got to dying then charging it to 100 percent all of the time but if I end up getting a newer phone maybe by after another almost 2 years then I’m treating that one batter than I treated my 11 that way I can feel better again and I wouldn’t have to use low power mode for when I don’t use it or since 55 percent all of the time
