Finally someone that can explain OCF well. Thank you so much for your videos. And you are straight to the point there’s no long drawn out video for nothing. Your videos are great. Thank you for sharing.
Bro, I just ran across your page I’ve been shooting for a little while but it seems like I’ve been struggling with certain shots and a lot of people hand Atlanta are really tight lipped, but I watch three or four of your videos already and you have increased my game a lot. Thank you.
You're education on all these videos are very much appreciated!! will be watching more of your videos! Always wondered -- do you find this to be a niche area of a business in town's? there's a dime a dozen of "photographers" but these type of dramatic photos seem to set you apart. Live in a heavily populated semi-pro photographer area and a lot of mom's just taking misc senior photos.
Yes and it’s a great niche to be in! Knowing lighting and specifically off really sets you apart from soccer moms that just buy and expensive camera and use auto with natural light haha.
Thanks for this. Is there an off camera light for small budget beginners you recommend? I’d like to try some of this. Second question, figure skating team portrait? Ice rinks are a tough venue, advice?
I’ll make a video on that! How small of a budget are we talking? I’ve actually never shot on ice except frozen ponds or snow, but they give you a lot of fill and ambient so you need power to compensate if you want to underexpose.
I have not bought anything yet. Mom budget. I have a decent Nikon (more than hobby entry level I so can up out my screen) was thinking of getting their HSS off camera flash to start. Or maybe renting lights.
I always learn something new from you. Is there a reason or am I doing something wrong that I cannot go past 1/250s. When my strobe is on it does not let me get to 1/5000s?
Thank you for taking the time to tell me that! What type of strobe do you have? Not all strobes have HSS built in, which allows you to raise the shutter speed past the normal max sync speed. With my FJ400s I have to turn it on with my remote on my camera.
Hey Matt, or any seasoned photographer. Why wouldnt not bump the aperture up to F10 or f11 and keep your shutter speed lower so you didn't have to use HighSpeed Sync?
Hi Matt - great video. Always learn something. Any chance you would do hockey portraits? Having trouble coming up with ideas other than the locker room ones I stole from your old Westcott videos.
I’m glad my old videos helped 🤣 We don’t have hockey in my area unfortunately and I’ve never actually shot it. If I were to shoot hockey portraits, the first thing I would want to try would be using flash duration to freeze action and have a player skate at me and stop abruptly to throw ice shavings towards the lens.
And yes, I’ve learned a lot from your videos. It took me awhile to feel comfortable using off camera flash but your teaching style made it much easier to get started.
Hey Matt love your videos. I see you use a Sony a7r 5, I also see you use a grip. Do you have the same issue we all have with that camera and grip not fitting flush with the bottom of the camera? I returned my grip due to being able to see daylight between camera and grip.
At 5:50? the boy is getting ready to hold the ball and then turns it around specifically to show the writing on the ball. Kids always do that every time so I specifically make the kids turn the writing away because I don't want anything to read when I look at the picture to take my focus away from their face.
Anyone have a “mini light” idea that can be put just inside the helmet to expose that face in the helmet. Watching this video makes me want to find that look
Matt walks outside and sees dramatic clouds. “Lane, put on your gear and we’ll get Sonic after practice.”
🤣🤣🤣 I’m not sure if sonic would do it. Maybe chick Fila hahaha
@@MattHernandez😂Good video Matt…

Could you use 7’ reflector with a grid and get similar effect?
No it wouldn’t have nearly the output unfortunately.
Thanks for this.

Love it man! Except the sweat bees!
You and me both!
Are those deep dish reflectors the 45 degree?
Yes they are
Where can I find deep dish reflectors like these?
Here you go! www.fjwestcott.com/products/45-degree-deep-focus-reflector-with-honeycomb-grids-diffusion?sca_ref=2860320.WGNh3o3iRN
Great
Thanks!
Hey Matt, or any seasoned photographer. Why wouldnt not bump the aperture up to F10 or f11 and keep your shutter speed lower so you didn't have to use HighSpeed Sync?
Because I wanted a shallow DOF. To me that just looks better in most cases. Gives separation from the background.

Is that where this years Summit lighting workshop was held? It said it was in Kentucky...
Kind of…I have one at my studio. This was my house haha. But yes, in Paducah.
Nice one

Where can I find those light stands?
Here you go! Avenger A5029 Light Stand: amzn.to/47Vi8lE
Do you have any online courses or classes that you offer to people?
I’m working on one now!

Personal preference there…do what you think is best!
I’d kill for this dudes posing guide. The highest ranked recruit in our area is looking for me to do this and I’m as nervous as it gets. Lol

We all know after this video, you took him inside the house and whooped his ass 😭🤣
Hahahahahahaha. If you’d only seen the out takes 🤣
Anyone have a “mini light” idea that can be put just inside the helmet to expose that face in the helmet. Watching this video makes me want to find that look
I don’t think that would work because it wouldn’t be powerful enough to keep up with the 400s if it were that tiny.
That would be nice though!
It looks like your lights are not pointed directly at your son. Is this the case? Are you just trying to catch the edge of the light on him?
No they are pointed at him, just at an angle.
Jesus love you all so much❤️✝️
We love Jesus too!
