"Coaches hate photo day."😆 Truer words have never been spoken.
No doubt 🤣
Perfect timing I have some pictures to take tomorrow and your tips will be very helpful and I always learn so much from you thank you
Awesome! Let me know how it goes.
I just did a similar setup, but I was on the baseline with a single 43" umbrella, and I had them lined up between the free throw line and 1st lane line. I was using a barebulb AD200 in the umbrella, a tt685 for one rim and 2 tt350s in the other, all zoomed to 105 (the highest common zoom they have). My rims were closer, about 6' from half court and 6' from the sideline.
a7iv & zeiss 16-35 f4, 1/250 f4 ISO 100, all flashes at full power.
I shot with the camera on the floor angled up @ 32mm. My umbrella stand wasn't very tall, so I had my umbrella straight and not angled down. I worried that I would get too much light on their feet as opposed to faces. The only downside was I lit some of the gym ceiling beams, which happened to be painted white, but it wasn't hard to fix in lightroom.
I'm liking your setup and the idea of 2 umbrellas. I wouldn't need as much power, and I could get those closer than a single umbrella without shooting on the floor around the legs or raising the camera to the side.
Soooo informative Matt, thanks!
My pleasure!
How did it go?
Thanks
No problem
Thanks for the idea.. I will have this scenario soon
Great!
Great tips! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Perfect timing. Have some next week
Perfect!
Hey Matt, do you ever have a problem with the floors getting slippery from all of the fog machine solution? Mine leaves a slippery trail where the fog travels and I am always paranoid that one of the players will slip. I try clean in between students but just wondering if you have this problem too.
Hey there, Matt will probably answer you too but I had the same problem. With my issue it turned out to be the weather so I’m winter the gyms are fine but when I shoot from June to august with the humidity it makes the fog become that slippery trail like you said. I just had to keep wiping things down but I never have problems in winter when it’s less moisture/humid
Not really with the fog machine, but I do with atmosphere aerosol. Just make sure that you have towels to clean that up if it happens so nobody slips.
@@MattHernandezany concern for the small fog machines (like the ulanzi) setting off locker room fire alarms?
About to start my Dramatic Sports Photography journey, and I wanted to ask if starting with one 600 and one 400 flash will work for now?
Thank you, amazing work.
Should work yes! Thank you!
@ Awesome, thank you.
Thanks, Matt! Your content is so helpful! Can you tell me if you have the school turn off fire alarms? Is there a concern with that much fog?
Awesome! I haven’t ever done that know. It also depends on what type of fire alarm they have, but turning them off during the shoot is definitely an option if they are ok with it.
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it
You never use large cloth backdrops Matt?
I do sometimes!
Hey matt, I love your vids. Very high quality and easy to understand. I’m not a sport portrait photographer but I have 2 flashes and have ran some tests shoots but nothing serious yet. How do you break into it? Like starting at a local park that runs sports or a school? I just have a lot of questions on the business aspect.
I just started doing it lol. Started taking action shots at middle school football games and someone asked me for a photo shoot so I just did it and went from there! I offer one on one mentoring if you’re ever interested.
Matt, have you ever needed a gel color you didn't have, for example, a maroon/burgundy? Can you stack gels like mixing colors?
No not really. I have yes!
@@MattHernandez I appreciate the reply, I will be putting this in practice as quickly as tomorrow evening! Lol
Thanks for all the content, advice, and instruction!
That was very informative and interesting! Thanks! I have a question. It’s about the soles of the shoes of the cheerleaders when they are lying on the floor. Everything is so super clean and neat but the soles of their white shoes are darkened. I know shoes get dirty but is there a way to eliminate this blotch from the photo?
I’m sure you could but I’m not sure that would be worth the time. I didn’t even notice!
I’m not nearly as good or experienced as you Matt. So my question is a serious one. In shooting teams with 8, 10, 12 or more players I see you use 2 large umbrellas. What would the negatives be in using 2 large horizontal softboxes?
There wouldn’t be any really as long as they light your subjects! They are just harder to transport than the umbrellas but there most likely isn’t much difference in the light quality. Good question!
@ thanks Matt👋🏻
Hey. When you say you put your deep reflectors at an angle…. How much? Aim at far side of group, near side, or the middle ? Appreciate you.
I usually aim at the middle of the group. Thanks for watching!
Was looking at the 7 foot umbrellas… they don’t come with a diffusion.. do you buy just any diffusion for them?
They have a specific kind you. An buy separately. Here’s the link:

Just clarifying, did you use (4) FJ400 strobe lights for this shoot? Do you always need 4? I am looking to purchase my first set up but wondering if I start with 3 or 4 strobe lights
Yes usually. Two umbrellas and 2 edge lights! If you do decide to get any westcott lights they have some great kits you could look into. I’d also appreciate you using my affiliate link either for their site or Amazon if you do! That helps support the channel. Let me know if so. Thanks for the feedback and support!
Hi Matt, what do you use to carry all your equipment/gear from the car to the field/gym?
I have a Think Tank Production manager and Stand Manager that I keep all my gear in!
Hi, I have a question. I work in a High School, and they won't allow me to use a Smoke machine for fear of setting the smoke alarms off, even in the gym with very high ceilings. Is setting off the smoke alarms concern you? You are using a lot of smoke, and the alarms are not going off. Or do you ask the district to disable them while you are there? Thank you
I have had schools disable them to be sure yes, but I’ve never set one off otherwise. Tall ceilings makes it a lot less likely but if you wanted to error on the side of caution you could always ask to shut them off for the time it takes to shoot.
Man, the A9 III even replaced the A 7RV for indoor flash photography! I bet someone’s feelings are hurt.
Dude I love it. It’s the best camera I’ve ever owned. I love the a7RV, but the AF isn’t even close to the a9iii and the feel of the a9iii is perfect.
Would you be able to achieve this similar effect with cheaper, lighter, speedlights instead of strobes? E.g The Godox TT685II or V860 II? Or are strobes 100% a must?
Speed lights are generally not anywhere close to as powerful as strobes, so that would be hard. You would need more of them. Probably at least twice as many.
@@Emptrix an average speed light puts out a 75 watts of lightning power. A commonly used strobe puts out 400 to 600 watts of lighting power. You’d be ok with at least a few 300 watt strobes.
Do you have a CP filter or just a UV filter on the front of the lens?
It’s a polar pro mist filter.
About how long did it take with each team?
Maybe 15 minutes.
What brand and model of fog machine do you use? Anybody else that uses one feel free to chime in too!
Here you go! amzn.to/4hxSto0
How do you go about getting permission to dump fog all over the court? What does that look like? Is it a talk with the AD beforehand, the coach, etc?
I'm usually shooting teams other than basketball in the gym and I'm paranoid about an irate coach getting mad at the glycerine slime on the court and/or tripping the smoke alarm!
I didn’t notice any residue honestly. If I had been using canned aerosol or something that would leave a residue that was noticeable I would’ve cleaned it up. If you think it’s going to be an issue then yes, I would definitely work that out before hand and if you plan on that happening, just offer to clean it up.
Can you get away with using 200 ad pros with the 45 degree reflector
I have westcott lights. You could possibly use the 200s but the edge lights wouldn’t be as bright.
