I'm a DIYer and figured out how to do it pretty much the same way he did. The only difference is I had subtreads and screwed up into all the treads from below, then screwed the bottom of the risers into the treads. Solid as hell now.
One hint: Cut one side of the tread at a sharper angle about 2" behind the nosing. This wont be visible later and it makes laying the tread down so much easier. I also cut the risers and treads a hair longer to make it a tighter fit.

I was a cabinet maker/installer/finish carpenter for almost 40 years and what I love about this Kid is his knowledge and he introduces me to all the new tools to the market although I will stick with my Masonite saw guide made out of scrap with a battery skill saw verses the Festool it works just as good. We are 1/2 way through replacing our old carpeted and crappy builder grade cracked squeaky stairs with oak and have been following your video. We have experience in other DIY projects but never any woodworking. And certainly nothing of this level. We are also picky and anal about results. I can not tell you how please, and a bit shocked actually, on how good they are coming out. We’ve been watching, rewatching, and finding any answers we need in this video. Thank you so much. You are the only other guy I have ever saw screw the stringer to skirt board .A plus to that also, screw your skirt board to the wall first in as many place as you can that will not be seen.
I do cut my treads with a small back bevel you will never notice it on the front. One other think i do is i level all my treads from front to back i use a screw as a leveling leg only at the back and tread will set on riser at the front . And yes the glue is the trick. Just some things i have picked up over the last 30 yrs I still watch to learn stuff too Great job sir

I've been searching for months and this is by far the best video of its kind! I really like that 5° bevel trick in key places to hold the adhesive. My staircase is a back/forth with a skirtboards on one side only, but I learned a lot of great tricks here. This video gave me the confidence to finally tackle my project. I am also doing it on previously carpeted stairs, and here I learned to remove all the old plywood and fasten everything directly to the risers.

About substituting tools for trade skills.... One of the best skills in the trades is knowing the right tool to use and using the best quality tool for the specific job at hand. The best Carpenters, and other Tradesmen and Women will spend the time and money to buy the best quality tools, knowing those tools will work better, provide a better finished product and be faster and more efficient. The quality of the finished product is worth it. The adage of "caulk and paint...." should never apply to a Craftsman...

Glenn the average homeowner here, I watched this video awhile back, I made my own stair jig. But what I didn’t do on my first set of steps is use enough adhesive. My first set of steps squeaked. So on my second set of steps I went back and noticed how much glue you used and my second set of stairs came out much better. Almost no nails on second set of stairs made a world of difference. Thanks for passing along your knowledge.

Best Video I've seen on how to replace (in my case) treads and risers. My husband and I bought a 130 yr old house which was in pretty good condition when we bought it a year ago (we've done lots of improvements ourselves, as well) but the stairs are a hot mess and we've been discussing our winter project of replacing the treads and risers. We're a bit nervous about getting it right - your video is excellent! The 5 degree cuts is such an excellent step and one I've not seen elsewhere. I agree with using more adhesive and minimal nails. Having watched your video has given me more confidence to proceed (hee hee - with or without my husband). BTW - your video didn't seem even remotely as long as it actually was. You had my undivided attention the entire time. You are very direct and to the point, you explain every step and tools used in a way lay people can understand. Lots of people have tutorials but are not actually very good teachers - you are a very good teacher. Keep it up.

Dude, you are a sorcerer! Just this past week I showed my boss your miter folding technique, and we used it to make two 16 foot faux beams. They turned out flawless. It was like magic.

I noticed you also have to correct the framer’s stair stringers with shims.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only who has to fix the framer’s mess before I can do my job

I have done my fair share of hardwood stairs. Full stain grade to stained treads. I'm usually behind sloppy framers but this method seems like it will save me significant time even if I'm dealing with good or bad framing. Also what I have found beneficial particularly with full stain grade is to have everything pre stained and at least one coat of clear. Sure it will need touch ups but it saves on bigger repairs from the trades behind me.

Spencer, so thankful I found your videos on stair building! I was scouring RUclips for a step by step guide to give me the confidence to tackle my first set of steps and wow, I am more than confident after watching your comprehensive video that I can take the task on. Thank you. Not only informative, but no rambling on, to the point, and entertaining. You have many skills! One question, could you use any other more common tools than the track saw to accomplish the cuts? A large investment for me.

Really well done. I just tore out all the treads in our squeaky staircase built in 1984. Not one drop the of construction adhesive was used back then. So I layered it on just like you recommended in your vid. You can hear a mouse fart walking up and down those steps now.
