The thing with htc is they just gave up after the cosmos and just started releasing absurdly expensive enterprise/vive pro refresh’s that were worse than the original vive pro
Yeah, It sucked balls. It was a tiny virtual display that anchored to one of the vive controllers. it was black and white at 30 FPS I believe. I used it once and that was it.
This was such a wonderfully done video. I started on the og vive and I hold a lot of nostalgia for it. VR was just so new and exciting at the time. The music choice especially in the video was so perfect. Slow gentle ambience, it reminds me a lot of VR back in the day. I don’t quite know how to describe it. Thankyou for investing your time into going through each vive headset, after the og vive I went to the index and never got to tryout a lot of htc’s other offerings.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words! Yeah early VR those were the days. It was so cool. No one knew exactly what it would turn into. Yeah you arent missing out on much haha i think index is better then every vive headset
Great video! Just FYI, the Vive Pro 2 has a big rang of other issues. Just like the Focus 3 (same optical design), it oversaturates colors, so that they look completely wrong. On top of that, the stereo overlap is eye strain inducing, as it is at 70° or sth, compared to the 90° of the Vive Pro. Also, it dynamically reduces brightness to reduce heat, and if you turn this awful feature off, the headset overheats to the point of the displays breaking.
I still playing vr on first htc vive and this headset is still compatible with new games (except Bonelab , this game needs valve controllers which I already bought) , so it shows that first htc vive is very good headset
@@josalt I'm still using an original vive, after watching this video I'm thinking about upgrading my headset to a vive pro 2, as the screen door effect of the original is annoying.
@@munhenfunkhenPCVR is better for some people. Higher quality, more games, and easy to develop for. More than the quest for sure. Standalone doesn’t need any wires, but has lower quality. Everyone has their own opinions.
@@gmdking Thats just like you buy a car to use in daily life. The car you bought does not have air conditioning, radio, comfortable seats and opening windows because it is faster. Sometimes buying the fastest car may not be the best option. I realised that when I connect my PC to Quest and play my story game in my bed, I can use it wherever I want on vacation, when I lose my laptop and get Excel work done with Quest at work, when I watch videos while cleaning the house, or when I watch Netflix on the big screen while I'm sleeping etc.
Ironically, the first experience I ever had with a "VR" device was in late 2015 with one you put your phone into. The phone I had was a HTC One M7. (To this day, one of the best looking camera I've ever seen on a phone). It looked incredible and ran amazingly well. I specifically remember talking to my brother saying HTC should just put their phone hardware into these phone VR headsets and they'd be ahead of the industry. It's so funny that in 2016 is when they first put out their first consumer model VR headset. I was mental about it, yet was never able to afford one, obviously. Still to this day I haven't, even being so interested and invested in HTC VR since the very beginning. Hopefully, soon, I will be able to get one.
Something I will say about the first generation Vive base stations is that they are basically tanks. They're such simple devices and because of that, they're durable. Lasers are lasers and eventually they will burn out, but with these stations, they're not too hard to replace if you feel like doing that rather than buying a replacement station.
>Gets to vive pro eye, doesn't use it for anything other than neos (it can be used for eye tracking in VRchat, ChilloutVR, and Resonite aka neos's successor), doesn't use face tracker addon (understandable, those are harder to get than the pro eye itself these days, also isn't bundled with the pro eye) >Still puts it at top of list :o
The Pro Eye is still basically the S-tier facetracking headset. repairable, modable (I slammed Odyssey+ displays and GearVR lenses in mine), lighthouse tracked. There's actually plenty in the wild from my experience, but they are still so hard to come by because those that have it, don't get rid of it. It's also the only HTC VR headset using Tobii eyetracking even to this day.
I remember my Vive. Used the thing till it almost broke then gave it to my friend who used it till the headset and both controllers stopped working. A very flawed but amazing headset.
If you still have the Vive Pro or Vive Pro Eye lying around there is a popular mod to swap the lenses with GearVR lenses, and the screens with Samsung Odyssey+ screens. Cuts down a ton on the glare and screen door effect.
39:48 That is called chromatic aberration and is in basically every vr headset. However, some headsets are better at making it less noticeable than others.
@@josalt I agree. I have never tried a vive headset but I have tried some headsets from the same time. I have the quest 3 and it basically does not exist on there. You have to focus on it and change your perspective to see it. Thank goodness though, it was definitely something they needed to upgrade! Also nice vid, very interesting to see how vive has changed throughout the years!
Awesome comparison between all the HTC headsets! I had the original HTC Vive, bought it used. Kept it a few years then sold it maybe 2 years ago. I ended up getting a Pimax Crystal after building a much beefier PC to support the resolution. I'll say the resolution of the HTC Vive was low enough my old gaming laptop could drive it just fine. But man, the screen door effect was always present. I like flight sims, and reading the gauges was always difficult unless you got up close. So I waited until a much higher res HMD came along where that wouldn't be such an issue, thus the Crystal. I knew HTC made quite a few headsets, but didn't realize they made 11! My first Android phone was a HTC DROID Incredible, good little phone.
Lets all hope that the new Vive Focus Vision works well. Looks a bit like a cross between the VP2 and Focus 3 (also 2448x2448 res). Better MR cameras with IR lighting for hand tracking, eye tracking, and auto IPD. Too bad they still have fresnel lens, but might not be too bad. I've preordered one from Vive Australia (au$1899) and untill mid October, this includes the streaming with DisplayPort adapter, which I'm really looking forward to trying out with flight/racing sims with my i913900k/rtx4090 PC. Fingers and toes crossed!
My first headset was the HTC vive that I had for about 5 years and played hl:a and boneworks at that time. At some point in time, I switched the vive controllers with the index ones before doing a full switch to the valve index. Switching between the two is a massive improvement
Love this video! Would love to see it done with other variations of headsets, like Oculus for example. Heck, even with other devices (like Gaming consoles) I think a series similar to this would be super entertaining.
Before you sell those HTC headsets, you should do a video on every Steam VR Tracking headset review, I think the only other ones are the Index and the Beyond
That must have been a complete mission to test them all and make this video. But thanks for going to the effort for us all, it’s seriously appreciated. Cheers man.
Hope you will do a review on the Focus vision at some point after that one comes out, I wanna hear your thoughts after all the experience you have gotten from all of these.
Great video! The Vive Pro with the wireless add on was my go to. Swapped the wands out for index controllers when those came out and it lasted me until I switched to the Quest 3. I definitely regret how much I spent on that sucker though.
Awesome video, really shows a tale of a company who made something great, then forgot what made them great, then remembered at the last moment…when it was too late (Vive Pro 2). Their phones feel the same way tbh. I remember using the og Vive when it came out and was so impressed with it…then they got steamrolled by their competition
watching this video again since im back in the market for a new base station tracked headset, crazy this was already 3 months ago. I remember watching the premiere.
honestly that flip up headset feature looks cool so. often do i take my headset off and drink water/wipe off the condensation on the lens. flip up would make that so much faster
Maybe it would be on a smaller headset but its annoying on the cosmos. It doesnt flip all the way up and it impacts where the headset fits on your head. !
i have the oculus quest 2 with the link cable and its amazing its not bad i recomend for someone who wants to play pc vr you might has well just buy the link cable and you get a very good pcvr experience
Right now, the only thing that htc needs to do, is to make the Vive 3, a fully pcvr headset with an amazing screen resolution, wireless out of the box, pancake lenses, inside out tracking and make controllers like valve index ones. Yes, it's hard, but the formula is quite simple.
your video's are so much fun to watch. i learned some cool things from this video, even though i have no headset (my family is poor). i normally get bored from 30 minute video's, but i never got bored of this one.
Vive XR Elite just got an upgrade kit with a normal top strap and gasket. For me it makes it feel just like a Focus 3 but lighter, which I think is a good thing. Wondering what you'd think and if it would change your placement at all. Still sucks that it has those controller dead zones, but other than that I'm really enjoying it.
i like the touchpad over any joystick, because you can be perfectly accurate on where you move your finger on the touchpad, unlike a joystick that is highly compacted and squished together so its harder to get an accurate position

I am using the htc vive for abt 4 years now and i did actually get used to the controllers. i absolutely love this headset and i cant imagine what would have been if i hadnt bought it.
I owned a Vive 1. I really wanted a Pro, but couldn't justify the price. I now own a Quest 3 and just either SteamLink play the Meta exclusives on that. I've never seen anything past the Pro, but I've heard of the Cosmos. HTC really couldn't hold up their quality past their second rendition and that's kinda sad.
It's amazing how often you can screw up the micro on HMDs. So now not just with HTC HMDs but also with various others. Somehow, so far only Valve has managed to install a really good microphone🤔
I just wish more of these headsets worked with steam VR easily. It's the main reason I don't use a quest. I dont want to have to jump through a bunch of hoops every time i get on VRC or want to boot up blade and sorcery (and actually have access to the fun mods. the nomad version mods are kinda just worse.)
i have an original vive (2016 version i think) and have put well over 1000 hours without anything breaking besides one of the lightboxes giving out a few years ago but the other one has been running nearly 24/7 for years without dying
Dog, what the heck happened with the pro eye microphone? That headset seems to suck in general, from the hand and eye tracking to the microphone, to even trying to buy it. Also i love the video!
not gonna lie ive watched alot of vr reviews and this is the best one on the internet you talk clearly great video and only 72k veiws and 28k subs you deserve alot more
Glad that the pro is still top 3, also if you dislike the controllers just buy some index controllers, that’s the best part about the steam vr headsets
hey josalt how do you feel about the rift and vive screen looks like? are they almost the same? just the overall experience not the small detail different. i got a vive kit without link box so i can't see it myself but i do have a working rift kit
Nice informative video mate. I've owned 3x Vive headsets over the last 5yrs; OG Cosmos, Vive Pro1, and XR Elite. My OG Cosmos has been packed away a long time ago thanks to poor tracking. My Preordered XR Elite went back for a refund because I never could get wireless PCVR to work as well as my Quest Pro. Too bad, because it was nice and comfy. I still have and use my +4.5yo VP1 (with 2x2.0 base stations, Etsy Gear VR lens mod, and Index controllers). This headset still works well and night flying in sims like msfs2020 and playing darkish games is very nice. However, the SDE is a lot more than I'd like and even with a lot of super sampling thanks to my rtx4090, the clarity is nowhere near as good as my QPro and Q3. I never bothered getting a VP2 because of its lack of oled, together with fresnel lens that could not be upgraded like my VP1 w/Etsy lens mod. Maybe wishful thinking but I'm hoping in the near future to see a Vive Pro3 with high res micro-oled screens and pancake lens. Also hopefully in a bit smaller form factor. If Vive doesn't come out with something like this I think that their days in PCVR may likely be coming to an end. Time will tell I guess. Anyway, thanks again for your vid mate and best cheers from the GC.
I have the HTC vive pro 2 and when you get everything setup it is so good and really good for gtag but if you are getting the pro 2 get valve index controllers but the pro 2 is the best headset
Vive's downfall is honestly the saddest I've ever known. They were once the lord of PCVR between 2016-2018. But in 2019, Vive's reign shattered to pieces when the Index released which is simply the better Vive, and the Quest 1 was also released with it not needing a PC and having a cheap price point. Even though Vive still continues to exist with the Pro 2, we unfortunately had to move on.
also use virtual desktop to use the headset as a monitor, it'll let you do all the things you say you want steamvr to do (because spoiler alert: steamvr will never do that, because it's not the god damn point, it's literally just meant to be the interface between your computer and it's software, and your VR headset, that's it, the fact it does the desktop at all is just for things like games that may have a desktop window to change settings, and stuff like that)
I've got a vive pro 2. Yes, the problems all exist. Even worse is the cut down support of it: htc stopped making/ selling of the face tracker for example. The controllers on mine are noticeable loud when rumbling. Even if you play something louder like beat saber. And I really dislike the IPD dial. If you bump into it somehow it is on a new setting instantly and a big overlay pops up in your game. I still like the headset and I would buy a pro 3 (if it will ever being made), if it gets improved. Also im really surprised by the speakers on the headaset.
@@josalt Yea, I also dont believe that ther ewill be a new iteration of the vive pro any time soon. Seems HTC is trying mor ethe mixed reality route at the moment. But who knows? Im currently not doing that much with vr, so maybe I dont need it in a couple of years anyway X D Or I will try some other manufacturer at some point. A bigger field of view is always nice : )
I have the vive pro eye with wireless adapter. Still using it as no one has released a headset that does everything it does. Disappointing that htc never released a successor for this headset.. the only thing it is lacking compared to newer headsets is resolution. This is a 5 year old headset now
I bought the vive focus vision a few days after it came out. I’m still waiting for my display port streaming kit which I had to pre order but it’s a great headset on pc. Standalone is just so bland tho that the quest 3 just blows it away. Kinda wish I bought bigscreen beyond or something because of the base station tracking, pancake lenses and micro-OLED display. Still, it’s a good headset but it’s definitely better for pc vr
I love the VIVE cosmos there’s was gonna be a htc VIVE cosmos play and when it was supposed to release it was gonna be 500$ and there was supposed to be a htc VIVE cosmos XR but it never came it was gonna be wireless.

I am using the htc vive for abt 4 years now and i did actually get used to the controllers. i absolutely love this headset and i cant imagine what would have been if i hadnt bought it.
Oh wow! And you still havent upgraded?
@@josalt nope i didnt but listen. I just found a good deal yeaterday and im gonna pick up the vive pro 2 the day after tomorrow.
I’m buying an OG Vive for “nostalgia”, development and for the steamvr ecosystem :D
Lol yeah i didnt mind using it tbh but it could have been so much better
The video I’ve been waiting for
🥰
@@josalt honestly can’t wait for more episodes
not gonna lie ive watched alot of vr reviews and this is the best one on the internet you talk clearly great video and only 72k veiws and 28k subs you deserve alot more
Thanks thats so nice of you to say
in 2024 the Vive Focus is going brand new for 270 and 3/5 star reviews... big shocker
Glad that the pro is still top 3, also if you dislike the controllers just buy some index controllers, that’s the best part about the steam vr headsets
This is amazing.
I loved the Oculus one. This one's the same!
I'm so jealous of you, lol.
Thanks legend!
This is just a beutiful video. The music works very well with the feeling that I think you are trying to give. Love it!
Thanks mate
Vive Pro was HTCs last good HMD in my opinion lol. I've returned every other HTC Vive Product since then.
Yeah i would agree with that. They just completely lost it. I think valve basically made the vive and its all been downhill since then
Did you buy the pro 2 and return that as well?
@@josalt Is the pro 2 worth the upgrade? This video seemed to show it was. If "money wasnt an issue..."
@@brokenstring21 I didn't, because of all the bad things I kept hearing about it.
Wow all these games on every headset look really good considering I only have a quest 2
PCVR is king haha
hey josalt how do you feel about the rift and vive screen looks like? are they almost the same?
just the overall experience not the small detail different.
i got a vive kit without link box so i can't see it myself but i do have a working rift kit
Why aren't you more popular I love your videos❤
too kind 🥰
Wow. That's a lot of headsets. Didn't know they did that.
Niether haha
S tier video as always
Thx!
to be honest after seeing this getting a used htc vive 1gen with a gear vr mod seems like an insane deal
Yeah does the job
you should try the microsoft tape (Windows mixed reality lenovo explorer held together by tape)
Lol
I have the HTC vive pro 2 and when you get everything setup it is so good and really good for gtag but if you are getting the pro 2 get valve index controllers but the pro 2 is the best headset
this reserved more views this is really amazing.
Thanks for saying that
I know it might not go viral as much but I would love to see a video like this from PSVR1 and PSVR2, even if there are only 2 of them hahaha
Actually sony made vrs before the psvr they connected to your TV or console the sony glasstron was the original but there were some other ones too
It'd be interesting to see how that would go if he did make one
@@Midnightthecatvr yes, since the PSVR1 has excellent exclusives and its light tracking is very interesting to see.
@@nerddeku9675ps3 controller with ps4 camera kind of day
Been sticking with my Pro Eye for 3 years now because nothings been worth upgrading to
Yeah that was an awesome headset!
I love your vids and how much effort you put in to them, great work man!
I guess this just confirms my suspicions, I will be getting a quest 3… especially with Steam Link, I don’t know if it can be beat just yet
also use virtual desktop to use the headset as a monitor, it'll let you do all the things you say you want steamvr to do (because spoiler alert: steamvr will never do that, because it's not the god damn point, it's literally just meant to be the interface between your computer and it's software, and your VR headset, that's it, the fact it does the desktop at all is just for things like games that may have a desktop window to change settings, and stuff like that)
I've got a vive pro 2.
Yeah dont disagree with anything you said. Wouldnt get your hopes up for a 3 the bigscreen looks like the way to go.
@@josalt Yea, I also dont believe that ther ewill be a new iteration of the vive pro any time soon.
Seems HTC is trying mor ethe mixed reality route at the moment.
But who knows?
Im currently not doing that much with vr, so maybe I dont need it in a couple of years anyway X D
Or I will try some other manufacturer at some point.
A bigger field of view is always nice : )
finally, normal microphone on the focus 3
I have the vive pro eye with wireless adapter. Still using it as no one has released a headset that does everything it does. Disappointing that htc never released a successor for this headset.. the only thing it is lacking compared to newer headsets is resolution. This is a 5 year old headset now
this is the best youtuber ever
🥰
Mate what is that background ambient music you've got on, it's amazing!
The editing on this video is great, it's a shame it didn't get more views
Mannn i remember the first time I tried the htc vive at a local art convention at a local college. I was hooked on vr ever since.
Btw what are your pc specs?
