      Most helpful to me was water collection system. Is this suitable for drinking?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +2

      @@carlsails58 Let it rain a short while to rinse off all the salt and dirt then start collecting to put in the tank. When near a big city, the pollution can take a long while to wash from the sky. It is best to taste the water before putting in the tank. There are bacteria and mold spores which are naturally floating in the air so these will be in the water as well. They will not necessarily make one sick but they can degrade the water as they multiply. The World Health Organization says to add 1/8th cup of 5.25 percent sodiumhypochlorite, common bleach, to 50 gallons of water and that will kill most microbes even when taking water from a stream of suspect city water source.

      Thanks, John, for the positive comment. Fortunately, Tanzania is well south of Somalia so we should be safe. We personally know people, and their horror stories, who were abducted and held for ransom in the Philippines. We are not about to take chances. It was only in the past year we were running into South African cruisers who have been to Tanzania and spoke highly of the place. This is the land of "Dr. Livingston, I presume?" as most of the early British explorers based in Zanzibar, just off the African coast. We have cruising friends who have passed us up and are there now. It all looks good. I don't need to be a "Captain Phillips"! Could be an interesting video though....I will keep the GoPro in my pocket.

      Cole, if you have a yacht club nearby, just amble down there and ask if they give sailing lessons. Many clubs will be happy to have you on board and chances are that you will find someone who will be happy to not even charge you anything.
      Alternately, ask if you can put a note on the notice board to the effect that you are looking for someone from who you can learn.
      I would recommend that you start off with learning on a dinghy as crew, progressing to skipper then going solo. That way you really will learn how to sail and be welcomed to crew when the time comes to move on to bigger things..
      Anyway that's how I did it 30 years ago (and made the best friends I have)

    I have an very good tip for you. I live in Queensland Australia and we have very harsh sunshine so we use a product called lanolin spray allso knowen as woolyolk. its made from sheeps wool oil and very fine dry spray. Use it on zippers,dogers,bimminis
    covers and window/hatch seals keeps the rubber from drying and cracking, and the inflatable dinghy helps to preserve the materials,stitching and the vynal used to make the dinghys out of. as these are expensive to replace, a little T.L..C gose a long way. See its because oil is inpermible to water why it flots.

    Hey, a thing i started doing around the house or shop is using part of a plastic shopping bag to water tight, or just tighten up a thread or seal. Could work on that small window in a pinch. Leaky garden hose threads are a common one i use it on. Just think of any plastic bag, or candy wrapper as cheap easy to find thread tape, or seal tightener. Might be handy on boats IDK. I've used this on maybe a dozen things now. There's probably plenty of Chinese plastic out there you can just snag if you look for one.

    So if you 'hand' a line is there a way to then hang it on the railing?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад

      If you mean the life lines, I would never want to do that as certainly, sooner or later they will fall in the water and tangle on the prop or rudder. I just hang the handed line on the winch or, for the reef lines, there are Velcro straps, screwed to the coach roof, which hold them in place.

    Your "hand" the line top was good, but I can offer an option I think better, learned from years of handling audio cables. It is close to your tip.
    Basically, on the odd numbered loops, put the twist as per usual.
    On the EVEN numbered loops, twist it opposite & lay into hand backward.
    This way each loop cancels the twist of the one before.
    This is hard to put in words - look for musicians vids to see it!

    Gathering water from the bimini: isn't such water brackish due to the salt accumulated on tarpaulin?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +1

      It takes only a little rain to wash away the salt and dirt then the water is worth keeping. However, depending on the location, rain is not always as clean as one might think. It would take a considerable rain to wash pollution out of the atmosphere in Los Angeles or Denver. I have caught rain water which tasted like auto emissions and was not worthy of washing clothes in. My video, "Water What's In It" could be worth a watch. It is one of the earlier vids so the editing and presentation is not the best but the information is there.

      California, you have a good question. There are places it can take up to 12 hours to upload a video. The problem is, there is no getting around the slow speeds so I start late at night, when internet use diminishes, and speed increases and hope nothing screws up to cut short the upload, which does happen and it all has to start all over again. Part of the adventure of being in out of the way places.

      Building material. They don’t wanna use their own beach and have no beach. There may also be something to it being fresh water sand, not salty sand which is harder to build with and have it last long term.

      Sand can be quite different. Dubai and similar cities import sand from far away even as they are literally next door to a huge desert as the desert sand is unusable for skyscrapers.

    Tip #1 for Tip #1 - Never use Vaseline on rubber gaskets...Vaseline has petroleum by-products and it will degrade rubber

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +2

      Bj, That would be my first assumption as well. Then there is a cruising friend who has been sailing the worlds oceans since 1978 and has always used Vaseline on the rubber gaskets of his port lights and has never had a problem doing so. People put Vaseline on their bodies but don't smother themselves with 30 weight. Go figure. If one should ingest Vaseline then "it is only expected to cause a loose or soft stool." But some information says not to use Vaseline on natural rubber, from a rubber tree, but it is fine on synthetic rubber. Many O-rings are made to withstand oils. I will stay with silicone grease but won't be hesitant to switch over if the silicone runs out. Plus: Vaseline Petroleum Jelly is highly-refined, triple-purified and regarded as non-carcinogenic and non-comedogenic. ……..non-comedognic...does not cause blackheads by blocking the pores of the skin.

      Buy Dow-Corning 111...we use it on hyberbaric chamber gaskets and it definitely does not cause them to degrade prematurely

    • @Q3Cyrus
      @Q3Cyrus 5 лет назад

      Depends on the type of rubber. e.g. EPDM or Viton.
      The primary difference between Viton and EPDM is chemical resistance.
      EPDM is good in steam applications and has fair chemical resistance. It should not be used with solvents or petroleum agents.

    What's a "blue water sailboat"? Webb Chiles just did a circumnavigation in a Moore 24, so is a Moore 24 a so called "blue water sailboat"? Any sailboat is is "Blue Water Sailboat" in the hands of an experienced sailor, and no boat is a "Blue Water Sailboat" in the hands of a novice, find a new term

    • @SaltyPirate71
      @SaltyPirate71 5 лет назад +6

      Ok. People have also taken row boats across the Atlantic ocean, but that doesn't mean it's a common thing or a good idea. "Blue water sailboat" is obviously a long-accepted, common term referencing cruising style sailboats that are designed for lengthy ocean voyages, distinguishing them from dinghies, daysailers, coastal cruisers and racing boats not designed for ocean voyages. Why don't you quit making such stupid comments and inflicting yourself on others?
