Well...i have seen a ton of prestige skins in my games short after release so...i don't think they really care about backlash as long as the numbers work out.
Seems you can't do something dumb enough that there wouldn't be still enough people throwing money at it.
Which means it was probably immensely successful and made them a lot of money. Honestly, I prefer stuff like this compared to what they could be doing.
Ironically Jhin's character would probably consider this uninspired.

The pure irony is that this is a mockery of art. Skins, while only cosmetics in a video game, are very much an art form. And the Dark Cosmic Jhin skin was really art. But this takes that and taints it in the greedy pursuit of money, existing only to be sold and not as a form of expression or creativity, with a complete lack of soul or passion. Jhin would be disgusted.

Am a jhin main and I saw the chroma and was so excited to finally use my mythic essence on something I wanted… then I saw everything about getting the skin and now I’m just sad, angry, and devastated that I will not be able to get what I think would be my favorite looking chroma I’ve ever seen. No I will not refer to it as a separate skin, it is a mythic chroma through and through even if it’s monetized as a separate skin
I feel like the original Dark Cosmic Jhin just looks better. The "chroma" makes him look kinda dull. I would have enjoyed a mythic "chroma" that's cosmic colored, pre corruption. Similar to the Lux skins. I feel like that could have been more interesting. And obviously skipping the whale mechanic where you gotta pay 200 dollars.

I feel the same. As a Jhin main since he came out and witnessing every skin that came for him this is 200$ CHROMA. For jhin skins I was a completionist but after that not any longer. If I want to waste so much money on gacha I’d play genshin or honkai star rail

There are two notable other comparisons that you missed talking about in this video.
1: Before there were mythic chromas, there were mythic skins available for 10 gemstones, which were only obtainable via a small chance when opening a box. Not only was this total cost often around $200 or more, but those skins also had NO updated voice lines in comparison to the base champion.
2: A variant of an existing legendary skin that counts as its own skin with it's own border, splash art, and icon? Wow. That hasn't existed before. Except it has. Lancer paragon and rogue Blitz, solar and lunar eclipse Leona, cosmic and dark cosmic Lux, among several others.
Riot has borderline amnesia when it comes to money making schemes involving skins, and they've been taught and subsequently forgotten multiple times that the community does not equate spending power to prestige through these failures. Legendary variants weren't even intended to be prestigious, and at least they were reasonably priced for what they were, you even got a DISCOUNT on the cost of one if you already owned the other.

Ikr, I got hextech Annie from a free box and it really is crappy. The only plus it has is it's prestige rarity that I'm not even sure would be enough to distract a person from buyer's regret if they got any of those skins for full gemstone price

Holy shit i can't believe this Riot meme is still going. That was a thing like 6 or 7 years ago when i quit league because the monetization was already getting bullshit enough back then and i was done with it, plus the game was so fucking boring to watch (0-0 games at 40 minutes in EU and KR were SO INTERESTING RIGHT GUYS??) that i completely lost interest in playing or watching it at all.
If they're going to implement gatcha elements, they should at least give daily missions or farmable currency for that gatcha.
Dark cosmic is already awesome as is, no need for a 200 dollar chroma.

TBH I like the new variant, I was rather playing with Project than Dark Cosmic before, but that is only if said variant would have been a mythic chroma (which it essentially is) like the others which have been released so far.

I dont know if you saw this but they had the same thing in TFT and it worked, people spent 200$ for a tactican, this was a "lootbox" type system where you were guarenteed the tactician after 50 roles (200$ worth of RP)
It's actually 60 rolls, for a little over 200$. And it's not just a tactician but also maps too. It's literally just _the_ gacha system, but it's almost less fun and more expensive than actual gacha games.
Think this was successful because TFT is also an app game. And why they’re trying to move some of their games to app because the Asia market (specifically China) will spend TONS of money on app games. TFT through the app makes a lot of money.

The problem is Riot keeps adding “exclusive” content that doesn’t reward actual mastery of champions. Like when have they ever given you anything other than a toxic emote you can spam over your head for mastery of a champion. In a game this competitive they should always add a hard but possible way for mains to get content like this. Even if it is like you must get Mastery 8 on this champion, then for every S-rank game you play you will earn a capsule afterward for a chance to earn this skin.
I mean, you can get high ranked, and that is plenty of reward for mastery and skill for a player. A skin means nothing, and you can get mastery by just playing a champion it really doesn't say anything about how much you've mastered a character. Even the ranking system for the game is flawed. You can get S rank doing the bare minimum, or you can not get S rank even though your decisions lead to the teams win.
They keep saying "exclusive" while doing the bare minimun to keep things "exclusive".
I actually kinda like this idea maybe if they can really define what an S rank is then I’d be down if they implemented this

IMO things like these should be used towards furthering the champion mastery progression system, maybe like a 3-5 tier pass for each champ where you can earn rewards through mastery points/challenges and you get an exclusive chroma + accompanying skin at the final tier. I really wished you could show off your love for/time invested into a champion past just getting them rank 7... missed opportunity but Rito has been catering towards whales much more lately.

Ashe should be okay, she got her mythic chroma for Project skin already, so you don't need to worry. High Noon already has chromas, it won't get another.

On the Official League Merch store you can buy model statues. 5 months ago there was a Star Guardians Ahri for USD 214.99. I believe you can still buy it. There are others like the current Ashe, Gwen etc. for 410 USD

cosmic was never good and although I stopped playing league I used to be a Jhin main and 90% of my games were with high noon, sometimes blood moon. High noon is the perfect character release skin
Riot started as a company aiming to create content that caters to the community' wants and needs. We loved them for that and they always listened especially during the time when the forums still existed. A team full of heart ready to make the community happy.
Can't believe it has come to this. This is now my reminder that no matter how beautiful a company is when it started, it will still end up being greedy. What a shame Riot.

Lmao they are def gonna do this more, many wild rift things have been slowly added to league (Pick Order Swap, Emerald Rank, and now 200$ skins and gachas). In Wild Rift, Prestige Battle Cat Jinx literally costs 200$ as well in the form of a gacha, and they've added more as well (shan hai scrolls aatrox, prestige soul fighter draven, etc). I wouldn't even be surprised if later on they add a Collector Rank similar to the one on wild rift, especially for Asian market.

They're declining in NA, i'm not exactly sure how their corporate structure works, but my bet is that the CCP (Tencent) does NOT re-distribute profits from higher-profit regions like LCK to LCS/NA office. Which means NA needs a scheme that can it can implement to counteract the drop in players, viewers, and content creators; but one that does NOT rely on anyone except the most die-hard whales.

I don't get why people care about this so much, it's just a skin. Nobody is forcing people to buy it, it doesn't give anyone an advantage. Like hell, they could release a skin for 10k and I wouldn't care. I'm not buying this stuff, and the people that are, are clearly happy to have something exclusive. I'd say riot has some of the best monetization practices compared to other game studios. If it helps funding the fighting game and the MMO, and make those games free, I'm all for it.

After the backlash of only releasing on wild rift, don’t think so. But at this point who knows. If they do it will be even bigger backlash from the community and then they will have to backpeddle REAL hard to gain the trust back.

I wanted this chroma so bad when I first saw Skin Spotlight's pre release teaser. I have all the Jhin skins and it looked so cool to me. But with this bs? I love Jhin so much, and alive been so excited to to get more skins for him as they come out. God this sucks.

(they have the best sounds and imo thats the most important thing)(atm im also playing soulfighter alot and im considering swapping to it as my new default from skt, because it looks better and the sounds are almost equal)
i like dark cosmic alot, but there is no way im buying a 200$ splashart. the skin is worse than a lot of modern chromas, becasue most of the time even basic chromas change a few details about the design (good example is project warwick). this "skin" only changes the color to a lamer color palette...

League can charge you for cosmetics which are worth most of the time so their is money to be made here. Unfortunately that means that there is indeed whales willing to spend a years worth of money on this game
They did this with TFT for a year already. It's fine! I bought the teemo chibi and pulled for the devil teemo 5 times. I didn't get it so I didn't continue. Also it has 60 pity.

When Blood Moon capsules, Blood Moon Aatrox and the Prestige Aatrox skin released, Riot had a bug on EUNE where Blood Moon capsules costed 1 blue essence. I was one of the lucky ones to notice it. Managed to buy 60 of them and opened 50 of them before Riot took away the last 10. But taking away them also gave me 4 gemstones for takin away those 10 capsules. And also I got to keep every skin I managed to open

Riot really knows how to make skins more exoensive than in Smite when you have those T5s from Odysseys being $100 or around $60 if bought during a gem storm.
These events also includes alot of other skins in it and some also being limited or unlimited (difference for unlimited is that it can always be bought for a specific amount of gems, unlimited T5s will remain the full price of the events while you wont get any of the bonus content that was there originally during the event)
Just do kinda like the odyssey event; difficult missions that skilled/dedicated players can earn. In the odyssey event beating the game mode on the hardest difficulty gave the Zenith summoner ultimate Icon and you could also get the odyssey ziggs with border for free.

Tbh, it’s just a skin and doesn’t really affect anyone. I get people not liking the price but i think it’s kinda cool that there are rare skins in the game (kinda like CS GO knives). I think the idea of just reworking a old skin is the right way to go as people can still get the skin for a lot cheaper, but those who wanna spend money can get that rarer version. But I do have to agree what is the point of mythic chromos if they wanna go down this route. I will like there the better way of dealing with it, but I’m not too worried/annoyed about this Jhin skin
My main problem with a 200$ skin is that this is just a recolor of an already existing skin. Were it something that went up and beyond an ultimate skin such a price would be received better and not only that, if we knew that Riot was actively working on League the same way they were back in 2016-2018 with actual amazing events and constant reworks people wouldn't mind if they knew their money was going towards something they are passionate about and know the people behind it care about it too. But I think we are far past the point where we can say that the executives at Riot care about something more than just money...

Necrit also missed a point - the difference between Leagues wanna be gatcha systems and ones like in Genshin is that you can ACTUALLY OBTAIN the premium currency through playing!!!! (Primogems) - Sure , a 5 star character with 6 constellations and a 5star weapon at rank 5 refinement can ( and probably goes) well above 500dollars unless you have really good luck BUT you can also grind and unlock it all without spending anything ( even though it would take a MASSIVE amount of time). Its not like we can grind for the 22k RP in order to get the skin...

As an Ahri player who has all of her skins and chromas (excluding the Foxfire Emerald Chroma cause League already decided to fuck my collection months ago with this freaking chroma), I hope Ahri won't get one of these. Prestige skins are already way too expensive. But she probably will eventually, cause it's Ahri.
But if they are going to do it, I do think getting a new splash art is a must. That would motivate me to potentially buy it, personally. Even though they recolored the border, which seems cheap, it would have seemed even cheaper not to have a new splash art.
(Also, I care about splash arts personally, but not to the point of buying or not buying a skin. But I am really disappointed that old Prestige skins don't have separate splash arts, I wish they would remake them, and if I don't like a skin's splash art I will be disappointed even though it's not big deal.)
To be honest i love splasharts, put them on profile flex the beauty and stuff, BUT not for 200€. So yeah this is bs and also i love the argument of the completionists, i want to be full on Jhin skins cuz of the champ, and also if you want exclusivity of something make it earnable throught gameplay and let the whales pay for other stuff. Exclusivity and whale feeding are 2 different things in my opinion.
Honestly, Riot should implement mastery skins if they want exclusivity. skins you obtain upon reaching something like 1million mastery points, or even more. You could even add chroma's for reaching certain thresholds.
If they would like to monetize it that is also possible by selling them separately for a set price, i would assume on their website as to not overload the client.

Callback to when Hextech Annie first came out and some youtubers were spending upwards of $300 to get it, but I got it in under $50 booyah. (That said I am the overly attached problem player that drops money specifically for certain champs mostly Annie)
What I get from the Jhin Mythic skin is similar to what they've done with the BA Ezreal Mythic skin in Wild Rift, which if I remember is a separate skin of its own. The gacha to get it tho is extremely pricey.
They are making so many gacha skins in Wild Rift, like every major patch, right? Very expensive.... game's for the whales, by the whales.

This happened not too long ago in Wild Rift, and I hated it, especially because it was Jinx's battle cat skin prestige edition, but with this "mythic chroma" added to the name, and it is the only Jinx skin I cannot have because of the price
Wild Rift has been having this gacha system for some time now and it is unbeliviably unfair, I'd hope it didn't work so well for them
I am playing LoL since season 2 and I never spend a single cent on this game and now I feel proud of myself for it

Exclusive skins in a game like this should be tied to achievements. We KNOW Riot can track these.
For example [As another commenter has said]: Have this tied to mastering Jhin. Hell, take it one step further: Require Mastery 7, owning all skins, and unlocking all Milestones tied to the champion. That way you have to show your dedication to your champion.
I'd be hella happy for something like this, because then only true mains of a champion will have an easy time obtaining them, while anyone else would have to work towards it even if they don't like a champ.

The longevity of your game is determined on how you intend to retain players and attract new ones. Pushing out low-quality content and calling it 'exclusive' is a great way to push away existing players and cause new players to see negative press before considering playing.

The thing is Gacha Systems trigger my completionist syndrome rly hard. Like i played Genshin for some time and i spend so much Money on it, that i quitted this game, just because of the gacha system. This system is highly problematic, especially the fear of missing out part, cause you are always forced to spend the money as fast as possible before the Event runs out.
I play league since 10 Years, but when i cant get this skin out of a reroll of Hextech crafting then i will quit this game for my own good. Its so sad that Riot goes in this direction. I always protected them for there actions cause i thought they get way to much hate, but this .... idk man.
If you dont have the self-control to not spend your money, the problem is not the system. The problem is your lack of discipline.

I wonder if it wouldn't be profitable for Riot to 'give' exclusive content through their other media. They could calculate the value of the skin in the final price. For example with the release of the Ruination Novel make it contain a code for a Kalista skin. Or with the Forge game, have an exclusive skin for the relevant champion. I reckon it'd boost sales for those books/games too and players would feel like they wasted less money as they have a skin and a game/book. A lot of people who don't care about the book/game might still consider buying it for the skin, especially mains.
Heck, even if it was just a lore related ward skins, emote or icon I'd feel like I could show it off because not a lot of people would own it. Though a skin/chroma would feel most special.

i agree with mostly everything you've mentioned except the splash art thingie .. tbh i bought more skins once they updated their splash arts. there are many players that do care and dont want a skin that has a meh splash art, i would argue that to many of us if the ingame is meh and the skin has a cool splash art we would buy it.

Championship Riven wasn't re released like you're implying. It was essentially done the same way as a chroma but instead of different colors it was a crown was added on the original, AND the original has different partical animations slightly
I love Jhin, he's one of my favorite champs in the game, and one of the few reasons I even bother playing the game. I own almost every Jhin skin, except soul fighter, because recently I decided to stop spending money on league due to these recent predatory decisions. Now I just get skins from weekly chests and re-rolls. So sad to see this, not just because it involves a beloved champ, but in general.
What pisses me off the most (aside from gambling for it), is that it's not considered a "chroma", but a "skin". Wtf??? It bothers me because it has nothing unique about it to make it its own skin. The only unique thing it has is the new splash art and new ult music. It has no new animations, new voice lines, new recall, or new model. I know Lux (Cosmic/Dark), Leona (Sun/Moon Eclipse), and Soraka (Dawn/Night Bringer) had the same treatment, of having two legendary sets of skins of the same line, but the difference there is that both variants had everything I just said Jhin's new cosmic "skin" doesn't, and gave you a discount if you already owned one of the duo skins, it wasn't gacha. It also doesn't help that they said that the exclusivity of this "skin" "might change later in the future".

the only time I remember a gacha system game not being entirely evil was Arknights, every time they released a new banner your first 10 roll was guaranteed to give you a 5* or higher character, with the featured ones being nearly double the rates over the regular ones. it also had a bad luck system where, if you didn't get any 5* or 6* character per roll, your odds of getting them went higher and higher until you did, plus if the banner had only one limited time 6* character you were guaranteed that character once after a set number of rolls unless you got it earlier. the difference from league being that getting that many 10 rolls wasn't too hard because they have a system that allows you to farm premium currency for free provided you had enough skill to do so, and could do it multiple times a week. honestly I wish all gacha games or services were a lot more like how Arknights did it, let the whales be whales but also make it easily accessible to everyone as well.

If they wanted to make an "exclusive content" skin they should have made it exclusive by achievement not exclusive by money. They coulda made it like "get 4444 4th shot kills on jhin to get this skin" and yknow what only hard-core jhin mains would get that skin cause casual jhin players would never achieve that.
