Rich people don't stay rich by blowing all their money on video games. These sorts of FOMO systems are specifically designed to prey on vulnerable demographics of gamers who already struggle to manage their finances -- often people who are already poor or significantly in-debt.

I will never understand how people can rationalize spending such an absurd amount of money on a cosmetic item, for a champion they may not even get to use every time they play the game. For the same amount of money, you can buy nearly two dozen indie games, or half a dozen AAA games. This is a comparison between literal hundreds of hours of unique content VS “ooooh sword is a different color!” on a specific champion you may not even use. HUH?!?!?

Riot have been slowly but steadily descending into the hellhole of scummy marketing tactics. This has me not only worried for league but for future games as well. I swear to god, if I’ll end up waiting over 10 years for the mmo and it turns out to be lackluster and filled with tons of micro transactions I will loose my mind. Edit. Just to avoid misunderstanding, I did not mean that the mmo should have no micro transactions. I know that’s unavoidable and that is fine as long as they are reasonable. What I am worried about is that the mmo will have so much of it that it will negatively affect the f2p players. That includes insane prices, p2w, locking way to much content behind paywalls etc.
i don't believe riot has the competence to create anything near an mmorpg, i was hopeful at first but slowly the realization hit me hard that they're just a bunch of dummies behind the wheel without a true goal for any of their projects

Guess Tencent had other ideas :/, now be get bloated, over-kitted, and unoriginal champs so that Winnie the Pooh gets a few more shekels(Tencent is subsidized by the communist government of China).
Yeah I'm also pretty worried about this. I doubt we will get anything close to what we know and have today (season passes, pay2play etc). No matter how good the game is - there will probably be some or many shady practices and we will have to either live with it or not play.
The only reason the 500 dolar skin "worked" is because it was related to Faker is like making a Messi related product in Argentina it works because of who it's attached to, I doubt any other hall of fame skin is going to bring anything close to what the Faker skin did
You say that, until next "Esports skin" is for Chovy or Showmaker, or any of the other legendary Korean players. Same shit happens, everyone ha ha let's ban in rest of the world, meanwhile in Korea sell 2 millions in a week. If you've been around actual Korean or korean-adjacent communities, you'd see how much different the vision of League there is. It's comparable to Soccer in europe or Football in USA. The progamers are basically deities to the youngs.
I doesnt mattert if they get on the faker lvl with skin sales for the next one. It is NOT a 6 digit sum to make a skin... So they will still make money of them. no matter what

Tbh I think this stuff works because it is limited. It doesnt matter if it is Faker or Ahri or whatever. People make 20 accs and buy it like NFT cuz they wanna sell the acc more expensive later.
Gatcha systems will never not be scummy, and i will always talk shit about them. Still, I'm just glad the game isn't p2w. I do understand that most people buying these aren't rich, just normal people with bad addictions. However, at this point you can't expect companies not to use any means to get money. People should take control of their lives and stop falling for financial traps like these and like gambling. If you're no gonna help yourself, don't expect the soulless cooperate husks to help you. My first problem with two league Re-skins costing 400 bucks is, that I can't afford them easily. My second concern is, that I don't have a business that wallows that hard in greed which pays off so good, to even raise the moneymaker. Like think about it. Most people who play league hate league, and they keep playing AND paying. AND YOU ONLY GET 3 WEEKS TO GET ADDITIONAL 400 BUCKS. The target customer must be dragons sitting on gold piles.
@@theeddy1296 it's called ethics. League is doing same as gacha games do, which is same as, say, governments selling cigarettes do. Then suddently it hits you, that maybe this kind of behaviour shouldn't have been allowed to start.
TLDR: Riot Games (The for profit company) realized that people buy expensive skins (that don't affect gameplay) because they have money, new "mythic variants" are expensive chromas of old skins... Rich people will probably buy them... Still doesn't give you an advantage.
@Schwibzik You can also blame the gamblers for losing their fortune in a casino, there are reasons for laws protecting the consumer/player. There are ethical and unethical ways to earn money, riot system is indeed predatory in some of these cases.
Except the issue is not in the gameplay advantage. Read the first half of your own comment and you will get the issue. Riot realized how easy it is to farm rich people so now, skins are becoming more and more expensive while their quality is dropping. This affects everyone, not just the rich people. Sorry if I am being rude but, are you intentionally being ignorant or do you really not see the issue here?
And me. I see it as Gucci or Lamborghini type of products. If you want to spend 500 dollars on a pair of jeans, go for it! If you want to spend 500k on a car, go for it! That's capitalism! Everybody decides what they want to do with their money.

So long as the game stays free to play (it will because this is the business model that’s worked for riot for so many years), they can do whatever they want with skins. My stance is just if you don’t like it, don’t buy it, and you shouldn’t care what other people do with their money
In my opinion you should also compare the fact of Battle Queen Katarina chroma's which also changed really a lot of small details even in her blades and were affordable for just blue essence during the emporium instead of mythic essence in the special prestige shop.

As a veteran league player all I want from riot is for them to give visual updates to those outdated champions and skins.. I've been collecting old skins like I'm collecting Pokemon cards just to see one day that riot will finally update them but not this kind of stuff that gives newer skin some more fancy chromas instead!
I cant understand why people bitch about these prices, it a "high end" skin deal with it, if you aint paying for it just move on, its not that big a deal. there are tons of skins that you can get so why do you care so much about a really expensive skin
I'm at your side. But for some of us, if things keep going like this, some people may feel that there is less content aimed at their pourchasing range. In the end, we are trading these skins for more money overall dedicated to lol, including gamemodes, trailers and related media.
It’s pretty simple. League is a F2P game. Its community is built upon its content being accessible to everyone. When these skins come out that cost hundreds of dollars, it drives a wedge into the community and splits the rich from the poor. Sure, it’s an optional skin with no power attached to it, so if you can’t get it you can’t get it. But that mental division in the community is still there. League is no longer a place for everyone. It’s a place for Riot to suck as much money out of people as they can. Yikes… not a good look.
@@zohan4394 its a personal choice. But only saying that is missing the forest for the trees. @popington4674 gives more argument about putting up these prices with care.
@@popington4674 Then the issue is the immature community letting such trivial shit drive them apart. What about all the really poor people or people without debit cards who can't buy skins at all? It's kind of comforting seeing these videos and forgetting how in my gacha game, where I've invested almost 5 years, they have made a new type of units with even worse conditions than the worst one (worse pity). EDIT: Oh, no. My gacha game doesn't carry pity across banners... I mean, except the one banner that is paid currency-only, but not the emerging ones with new units. Sad
Those gacha pity sistem you mention only become standard after genshin impact released. Many game before it doesn't even have a pity system, some have pity limited to specific banner or time period.
If I ever do end up making my game well enough to be stable, skins will be bought by a secondary currency that-while you can spend real money on it-is earned relatively easily by playing ranked or something. If I EVER do NY kind of Gacha event, it’s going to be a high chance and a guaranteed draw on box 3, with a bundle offer that’s cheaper than the 3 separate boxes
Wait, that darius one is literally the prestige skin color template, I'd recognize that color scheme anywhere thanks to Zed's (one of the only ones where it actually looks better than the base skin)
The issue with these skins are that it doesn't justify the price tag. A skin shouldn't even cost more than a triple-A game. Most gacha games let's you keep rolling till maybe $80 if you have the worst luck to get the event skin. While gacha is inherently predatory, it doesn't mean Riot should allow this. Unfortunately Riot can get away with it since they've made a name for themselves big enough that this issue won't cause major backlash. They can do something stupid by threading line between, then apologize, then do it again.
side note, i think these mythic variants are somewhat a reference to an event in league that happened in 2018. Riot made like 4 events of the type "VS" where players, in client, chose a "side" and gathered points to their side through playing and winning games. at the end of the event, the players of the winning side where awarded some loot and an icon to celebrate their victory now, in this Versus Event called "Battle of the God-Kings", Darius won over Garen, and since I chose Darius I was awarded a special icon with God King Darius in it. imo, that might be the reason they are called Divine God-King Darius and *Fallen* God-King Garen they did more events like (first event) Dawnbringer Riven Vs Nightbringer Yasuo (winner) (2017), Cats (winner) vs Dogs (2019) and The Trials (2019) but this one was 4 houses, the players chose one and they competed with each other, there was a personality test to help you chose one, it was like the houses of Harry Potter
I mean when the reroll chance is 1 in 1600, rerolling into any speciffic skin is insane to think of. And yet I got two gragas skins after I got a gragas skin with orange essence. And on top of that an orianna skin after I got a skin for her too. Same for xerath.
I don’t play PC league, but tend to play Wild Rift. My last obsession was during Syndra release, and back then we had an entire chinese-themed skinline put into a gacha system, and right after that - another one partly gacha, and fully FOMO. After that I quit for a year due to burnout (played too much, skins didn’t really bother me). Came back to fine a gacha skinline and a lot of kinda thematic skins turned into FOMO, now tied to certain yearly events and only available for purchase during that time. Ugly stuff.
the point that is often overlooked is the fact that in gatcha games (genshin, star rail, wuwa) you have a way to earn the pulls/capsules for free. yes, it's not as much as money can get you, but still - if you clear the game's content you get some currency. in lol, you don't. but i doubt riot would ever give you any way to earn a capsule, even though in tft you do get it through the battle pass
The genie's out of the bottle and no one's going to stuff it back in. In the Eastern markets, having an expensive skin is seen as a sign of prestige, so they'll always be willing to whale harder than Ahab for them no matter the price. Calling it right now: Pool Party Ahri is going to cost a solid $1,000, and it's going to make more money than all the gacha skins combined.
So people who I don't care about in the opposite corner of the world are willing to voluntarily spend large amounts of money for cosmetics which in return subsidises a fair, f2p game which I enjoy playing for free in my free time, plus all their other f2p games in development, including 2xko and the mmo, and people have a problem with that?

How would riot know a skin that's not purchasable is selling well? Even in good faith I can't see how they could disaggregate the data to conclude with certainty that the sells were for the skin. And it's not like riot doesn't have incentive to lie about it.
I don't have a problem with League doing this but they should make the skins available for Hextech drops after 1 year of release. It would be an insanely rare chance to get but still it being possible would be nice. Also people do have to remember these are simply cosmetics, but it would be nice to see them go into F2P after a year.
do we not have the swap variant skins already??? Blitzcrank mecha skin(Paragon and another one I forgot), Soraka dawn/dusk bringer and Dark/cosmic Lux and I remember them not being $200 especially Soraka's and Lux's since they're also Legendary!
I play gacha games my opinion may be biased, but i think what differs the gachas i play from league's gacha system is that a gacha like genshin impact or fate go doesn't force you to spend money to participate in the system, so even if you are a gambling addict you can still go "f2p" if you want and still fulfill your need for gambling. League forces you to buy a very expensive item that can't be obtained with f2p currency and the rewards aren't even worth it (like, at worse you will get a fragment of a 6$ skin for a champ you don't even play) Edit: also the capsules system is the first time most people who play league will interact with gacha and this can normalize a thinking that they need to spend to participate on the system or something like that.
they used to have a limit on how many regular loot orbs/boxes you could buy in league, if u tried to buy more than 200$ worth it would literally tell you to try tomorrow did they remove that?
irdk about skin prices cuz they dont affect the gameplay. Ill just buy the skins for the champions I like once I justify that the cost is worth it like a normal person.
Speaking of Tft Gacha, the new "Mythic" tokens or whatever they are called, replacement for the pity (which in my oppinion is still way better), they decided to put Prestige Chibi Tactician for 25 of those tokens. Problem is, to get to 25, it will at least cost you more than 200$, with the current Prestige Tactician being something like 0.08% chance to get on random roll, still wondering why no one even complained about this.
Because it at least gives you some form of control over what you get. Which is more than you can say for most other gacha mechanics. You can collect your 25 tokens and eventually get yourself a nice chibi or what ever expensive item you want.
And back when the Jhin mythic variant capsules were out, they used to give a capsule for free. I have a friend who actually got that Jhin skin from that 1 capsule lol. Now they don't even do that so people can't have that puny 1% chance to get it.
I honestly thought they would give a capsule since the original debut of these skins you got to pick the team you wanted to be on. (I believe darius's team won and got a extra icon for it) I was honestly expecting them to bring it back and say "whichever team you pick you gain either of their capsule." Buuuut they are really greedy-
This capsule system is the same system Square Enix is using on the skins in Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, if you pull in a banner it has 0 value for any other banner in the game.
Waiting for them to go back and edit the article where they said Jhin would be back. They also said it would be a year later and it came out in September. My guess is they maybe put the Jhin in there then don’t do the rest.
I really wish they would release relative roi for skins. Like saying "let's say we usually allocate 1 unit of money for common skins which usually net us between 50 to 300 units of money and we can work on 10 of them at a time. Legendary skins need 100 units and return 300 to 1k units and we can make 2 without blocking the pipeline". Without saying what's a "unit" and maybe even separating the units for investment and return so people won't say "you are making 10 times your investment! You can make it cheaper!"
so to point out about the jhin skin i own most skins in the game i WILL know if its available as i can no longer reroll skins as all reroll able skins are already owned by me i really hope they will make them available for me soon

Don't trick yourself into thinking it's rich people who buy these skin. There are many people who took out loans to purchase the Faker Ahri skin. I wish i was kidding...
Rich people don't stay rich by blowing all their money on video games. These sorts of FOMO systems are specifically designed to prey on vulnerable demographics of gamers who already struggle to manage their finances -- often people who are already poor or significantly in-debt.
The tiniest violin on earth is playing a barely noticeable tune of great misery.
@@Javano_ Plenty of rich people staying rich and spending money on this.

Ye, i don't get how gambling with lotteries and casinos is heavily regulated, but this stuff is just here, knowingly targeting children and exploiting people with low self control.
I dont know why lootboxes are frown upon but gacha escapes the gamers vitriol.
@@glcsander only in west in beginning, but people accepted it in overwatch. now most don't care since gacha games got so big most regions thanks to Genshin lol

@@glcsander Lootboxes are an entry point for gacha systems. Both mechanics affect the general game design, because if they don't make you want to spend money on it by downgrading rest of the systems, then it won't pay for itself.
HUH?!?!?
But. But. How am I supposed to flex my gambling addiction and lack of proper financial education then? 🥺
Do not underestimate the power of addiction and OCD. They know, that's why they sell so well.
400 dollars isnt absurd for everyone
@@manofhoff2623just because some people lose touch with the value of money doesn’t make it any less absurd. If you spend $200 on something you should want to get as close to a $200 value as possible. In this case it’s just dull people spending $200 for a $5 glorified chroma.
the only reason they do this is because people consume it. if no one bought the skins then this wouldnt happen. its the playerbases fault.
I remember a few years back before Tencent's full acquisition, one of the dev interviews talked about slowing down champion releases before stopping them all together. Guess Tencent had other ideas :/, now be get bloated, over-kitted, and unoriginal champs so that Winnie the Pooh gets a few more shekels(Tencent is subsidized by the communist government of China).
Micro transactions is a certain, no doubt!
Yeah I'm also pretty worried about this.
I doubt we will get anything close to what we know and have today (season passes, pay2play etc).
No matter how good the game is - there will probably be some or many shady practices and we will have to either live with it or not play.
@@heoar12 that's utterly baseless as a statement
So they will still make money of them. no matter what
All i heard is people are dumb. Sad to say its true… they never learn. Get used to it. Pre ordering games, is something we used to make fun off back in 2006 now people re order freaking digital games..!!! Like they really like being tricked.
No no... it's because of the stupid consumers
That's the only way to fix the system, by never even playing into it.
Gatcha system? Is Gucci and Lamborghini also a gacha system?
Lol is offering expensive skins. Boo hoo.
@@Habib_Osman I think the entire point of this isn't that they sell expensive skins, it's that they put them behind gambling. That's the entire point of a "gacha" system. Gucci and Lamborghini don't use gambling to sell their products... You have to save up and buy the product.
And yeah you have to be a sucker to buy Gucci honestly --- and that's coming from someone who owns a $1k hoodie (though I bought that cause a lot of my favourite rappers have worn it on stage lol)
If I recall the battle bunny MF variant was still capsules and the only thing new about it is a hat, a new bunny logo and the jacket

Remember when Dawnbringer Riven got a "mythic chroma" of the same quality and theme (being opposite and becoming Nightbringer) as these new skins but was 60 Mythic Essence
Also lee sin got a mythic chroma , swapping his color palette to that of truth dragon yasuo
/s "well, if you don't like it you should vote with your wallet"
I love the amount of times this still gets brought up to this day, when we know for a fact "vote with your wallet" makes no sense when it means PEOPLE WITH MORE MONEY (who are innately more careless with their money, because they don't NEED to not be) GET MORE VOTES.

TLDR: Riot Games (The for profit company) realized that people buy expensive skins (that don't affect gameplay) because they have money, new "mythic variants" are expensive chromas of old skins... Rich people will probably buy them... Still doesn't give you an advantage.
wrong. people were putting themselves into debt for faker skin.
@@hokage039 and thats like, their problem? No one forces you to spend money
@@hokage039 thats sounds more like a personal ( i cant work with monny) problen than a riot problem.

And me. I see it as Gucci or Lamborghini type of products. If you want to spend 500 dollars on a pair of jeans, go for it! If you want to spend 500k on a car, go for it! That's capitalism! Everybody decides what they want to do with their money.
I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of people really could not care less; it's rather a vocal minority being "outraged" by this.
Idk i get somehow invested in stuff like this even tho i never paid a cent to riot. Because you cant buy anything there, you pay a fee to rent an imaginary item until riot revokes your right to use them. Calling them purchases is a big stretch
@@tupacshakur5868 Most people are aware of this though and STILL decide to "purchase"/rent (whatever you'd like to call it, really) said skins.

Does it suck? Absolutely.
But it's the way things work and while it hasn't been widely accepted, it is most certainly widely known.
So long as the game stays free to play (it will because this is the business model that’s worked for riot for so many years), they can do whatever they want with skins. My stance is just if you don’t like it, don’t buy it, and you shouldn’t care what other people do with their money
Gambling is funding 2xko which is gambling with skill really makes you think
It doesn't affect me because I can ignore it. If none of you can then it's your own problem XD

Why do people keep crying, instead of just dont engaging with this kind of things
No clue.. seems like all common sense has left the comment section. Insane to see! Baffling.
Because they either need to vent or (in some even more delusional cases) think that it's actually gonna change anything, let alone other people's spending.

It's the last thing I could care about when it comes to League - what matters to me, personally, is that there's no P2W and I think most people share that sentiment.

Saw these and thought “yeah I could see myself spending gemstone dust on those” and then later on it hit me when I couldn’t find them in the Gem store
NECRIT ITS TIME TO ANALYZE A NEW ACRANE TRAILER!
and I expect it to be 45+ min long
side note, i think these mythic variants are somewhat a reference to an event in league that happened in 2018. Riot made like 4 events of the type "VS" where players, in client, chose a "side" and gathered points to their side through playing and winning games. at the end of the event, the players of the winning side where awarded some loot and an icon to celebrate their victory
now, in this Versus Event called "Battle of the God-Kings", Darius won over Garen, and since I chose Darius I was awarded a special icon with God King Darius in it.
imo, that might be the reason they are called Divine God-King Darius and *Fallen* God-King Garen
they did more events like (first event) Dawnbringer Riven Vs Nightbringer Yasuo (winner) (2017), Cats (winner) vs Dogs (2019) and The Trials (2019) but this one was 4 houses, the players chose one and they competed with each other, there was a personality test to help you chose one, it was like the houses of Harry Potter

Ugly stuff.
Not every gacha has a shared pity between banners though.
it's not cheaper to buy capsules in bundles so the gatcha isn't worse if your buy a single capsule at a time
I'd argue the first skin that got people scared was Pulsefire Ezreal. It was all downhill after that.

the point that is often overlooked is the fact that in gatcha games (genshin, star rail, wuwa) you have a way to earn the pulls/capsules for free. yes, it's not as much as money can get you, but still - if you clear the game's content you get some currency. in lol, you don't. but i doubt riot would ever give you any way to earn a capsule, even though in tft you do get it through the battle pass

For the record, most gachas work like how Riot is using this right now. The "compounded pity" system is still new and something most compannies do not want to adopt. So in a way, Riot is indeed representing the subsection of gaming they are copying this system from well, as they too are allergic to changing things for the better!

I don't have a problem with League doing this but they should make the skins available for Hextech drops after 1 year of release. It would be an insanely rare chance to get but still it being possible would be nice.

Necrit the trailer dropped a few hours ago.
League forces you to buy a very expensive item that can't be obtained with f2p currency and the rewards aren't even worth it (like, at worse you will get a fragment of a 6$ skin for a champ you don't even play)
Edit: also the capsules system is the first time most people who play league will interact with gacha and this can normalize a thinking that they need to spend to participate on the system or something like that.
they used to have a limit on how many regular loot orbs/boxes you could buy in league, if u tried to buy more than 200$ worth it would literally tell you to try tomorrow did they remove that?
I heard about it on the french LoL instagram account and commented « well no, that’s a chroma »

RIP prestige chibi banner
And back when the Jhin mythic variant capsules were out, they used to give a capsule for free. I have a friend who actually got that Jhin skin from that 1 capsule lol. Now they don't even do that so people can't have that puny 1% chance to get it.
i only buy these if its a insane skin or a skin on my main. these are not worth 200 but id still get them if its on my main champ
My 40 rerolls still waiting in my loot menu to try my luck on that Jhin skin... I see you riot and the promise you gave to us
I honestly thought they would give a capsule since the original debut of these skins you got to pick the team you wanted to be on. (I believe darius's team won and got a extra icon for it) I was honestly expecting them to bring it back and say "whichever team you pick you gain either of their capsule." Buuuut they are really greedy-
I’ve never paid for the loot boxes and never will, I’ve pulled udyr’s ultimate skin out of a freebie chest though.. all I’ve ever wanted 🎉
I own 878 skins and have had 0 mythic skins drop from loot the only one I own is anniversary. Mythic drop rate is so low it might as well not exist.
This capsule system is the same system Square Enix is using on the skins in Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, if you pull in a banner it has 0 value for any other banner in the game.
I got the Ahri skin because I did not want to grind the battle pass. Work one weekend and make the money. But I’m not chasing the new skins
I don't think most players would understand it and just complain the latter
Customers have 0 right to know a companies profit margins. Truly sick and baffling comments in this comment section.
