That switching building turned out magnificent. If that was indeed your first scratch built then you have some massive natural talent for that. Hats off to you. Well done.
I have no idea what is to dislike about the video. Another fine production. The work on the signal box roof is really fine modelling, as I know how difficult it is to properly cover irregular shapes with the scale scenes paper. I looked closely but had a lot of trouble finding any seems. I also like you reproduction of the mini track plans in the signal box to match your layout. Very clever and a good touch. I have taken a list of your suppliers and will have a look on line for n gauge items. Keep up the good work. Regards, Anthony Ashley
Another BIG pat on the back ! Very enjoyable and well made video. Your use of the building papers is well justified and you should be proud of your achievements so far. Happy modelling.
The signal box looks great Dave, the interior is a nice addition and should look really cool at night looking through the windows. Amazing to see that BR have managed to get a matching rake of res stock stabled at dean park! Bagged mail trains were usually a right mess of different liveries. Keep up the good work.
Hi, yeah I am going to add a couple of blue parcels mk1s and maybe a blue grey one too, just to mish mash it up a bit. But you know, BR always supply the best rolling stock and locos to Dean Park lol! Cheers for the comments on the box...I hope the area looks as good at night as I hope it does when the lights are on! Dave
Great update, the detail in the box is cool and so is the roof. The RES 47 and coaches look great and the possibility of a royal mail depot scene is something i haven't seen on any other layout. Cheers, Matt.
hi ya dave another good quality video from yourself and its nice to see the station starting to get its décor and you putting in signals. I think personally that no layout is complete without some form of visual signalling it gives its purpose and shows people that the railway is being run like the prototype. cant wait to see your next video keep them coming mate peter from essex
Love the box, really is like the real thing back in the day as of course it's a bit run down now! Your vids are great and I love watching your layout progress!
I've watched this video a couple of times now Dave and the signal box certainly catches the eye looks like the one at Waverley luckily for me seen this box when I visited Edinburgh a few years ago like the detailing inside top job Dave. Nice class 47 with the coaches attached. Like the cars and extra detail your adding. Cheers Kev
Cheers Kevin, just working on little details for the box this week and the inside control console thing. Glad you see the resemblance to the Waverley one, I studied photos of this box many many times! Dave
Really nice update Dave. The new RES loco & matching rolling stock are very nicely detailed & a great livery - you must have a fair few 47s at this stage! The new set of vehicles is really nice as well, especially the defender & transporter. Am really impressed by that signal box of yours, such an excellent bit of modelling & just keeps getting better with each new bit of detail, am really looking forward to seeing the completed item :) - Sim
Cheers Woody! I am glad it looks like the real thing. I spent many hours pouring over photos of the real thing when planning mine. Your comments are really appreciated. Dave
Mark, thanks for those kind words. Enjoy the planning process and all the best with your first layout. If you take your time, think about things and look at you tube for lots of advice (like I do all the time) then things usually go smoother with the build. But no always lol. Dave
Hi Dave, I have only reecntly come across your excellent channel via a link from Everard Junction. Thoroughly enjoying watching the build from the beginning and up to video 31 now Great modelling, thanks Steve
Hi Steve. Welcome aboard! Thanks for getting in touch and I hope you continue to enjoy what I do on the layout. A lot has happened since the early videos. It confuses me that despite Everard and I having very similar layouts/modelling techniques/era that so many people miss my channel but find his! lol. May I ask, how long have you followed Everard?, and how did you find him? I would like to try and understand why my channel is not as visual as his excellent youtube channel ;-) Thanks again and please get in touch if you see anything you want to ask about. Cheers. Dave
Hi Dave. Thanks for the fast and nice response! I have only recently got back into railway modelling and am about to start baseboard build in the garage so I have also only recently started watching suitable RUclips stuff to get some inspiration. I honestly cannot remember how I first came across Everard (maybe a search on how to weather locos or similar) but it was only a couple of months ago and I binge watched all his stuff to the start of his new layout. I noticed several comments from Everard about your layout in the course of watching and hence came to subscribe to your excellent channel. I am looking forward to watching all the rest of your videos in getting up to date! Cheers Steve
Hi Dave, Yeah its taking some time, but I am happy with the bits and pieces...now I will have to get ready to ballast. Prob leave it until autumn now, I'll see.
hi....keep watching, you might get them all finished for Christmas! lol. How did you come across my channel?, recommended?, through the Hornby Magazine article? I would be interested to know. Thanks for your support. Dave
great update! i see you went with the suggestion of dusty lion flower that I gave you? Great seats can't wait to see them finished and the other stuff you bought from him!
Yeah, I did, good stuff eh? I have a few things being repainted that I got from him, I will hopefully have them ready for next video. Thanks for suggesting him to me, much appreciated. Dave
Thanks Mark, I am glad you got something from my videos so far. The reason I put them on youtube is to show others what I am doing and hopefully give others some ideas and some of the items available to buy. I got most of my ideas by watching other youtube videos too. Its great to share. Dave
I'm moving house at the end of the month and just planning a new layout for a garage. Got to share space with my motorbikes. Got a few ideas - but thinking about building a simple West Highland station with another scenic section in a city center setting. I was inspired by your careful planning and construction - taking my time is going to be the secret to success I think. Keep the videos coming...really helpful and the tips on painting/detailing are really useful too:)
Shame there aren't any Mk2 Fiesta models out there. I'd have one based on my car. It's nice to see so much stuff happening on your layout. Signal box looks ace
Great update Dave, always look forward to the next one just like Rail Express magazine! I think I cheated with my masts as I use ballasted underlay I had to lift the posts really high and used the square nuts I use for earthing armoured cable, just didn't get round to painting them, cheers Darrell
Hi! I think I will put mine on 3mm bases and not the 6mm it sits on just now...according to the real thing its 4.7m from rail top, which works out at 72mm in OO Gauge. Don't want them too high, but if I am planning on running some electric trains the catenary still has to look right! Cheers. Dave
will measure mine now and see how they worked out, really like the RES 47 will have to get my Heljan Isle of Iona out and detail it up to get it anywhere near the Bachmann one!! cheers Darrell
Hey just to let u know I have a layout first looks on my channel! Wow dean park looks awesome with the signals also love the new class 47 just ordered my self an Arriva trains Wales class 150 and much more :)
Some nice additions. I like the vehicles. If you've watch my videos you know I like signals. I like yours too. Very fine seams on your signal box roof. Very clever with the track diagrams and interior fittings. Good bargain on the loco and nice train. I got the cable truncking, thanks.
Cool Rob, the trunking is great stuff. Yeah I have watched yours...signals make a big difference to a layout and a lot of people ignore it until they've nearly finished the layout! I decided to get my planned and positioned before the ballasting etc. Glad you like. Dave
good update dave.the 47 looks the part but just needs a coat of grime.i need to get the airbrush on my RES coaches now and my one is complete. i got all my station detailing parts from dustylionflower over the years...he does some cool stuff.its been a while since i have used him but he use to do wire meshed fencing which i need more of did you see it on his site? terry
Hi, he still has the mesh fencing yeah. Looks good too. AAARGH...NO, I cant get my new RES 47 dirty! lol Love the red livery on this 47. Plus its equipped with push/pull leads, so it will make the odd passenger service appearance. Dave
Superb update Dave. I love the signal box which you've created - its absolutely superb. Can't believe you put up DustyLionFlowers Ebay ID - I had to go and spank £40 on some of his stuff!! Keep up the great work :)
Beware, it is addictive!! and expensive lol. Hope you enjoy my layout progress of my layout and look forward to seeing your first journeys into train world as your layout comes together. Dave
Dave the signal box look fantastic nice to get a better view, good job with the interior as well, 91 looked good running and love the new 47, I have seen it on Terry's layout and fancy it myself. What have you used to lift the dapol catenary masts up with, and how high you made the base, not touched mine yet Andy
Hi Andy, I got a piece of 6mm plywood, I drilled lots of holes in a straight line and cut them in to squares 10mm x 10mm. Not the greatest, but its all I could think of...most of it will be covered by ballast, so I will just spray prime them grey to make them look like concrete bases and then I will ballast. You think they look ok? I think it makes them more realistic and when I searched for real life heights I was 'told' that the cabling on the real stuff is 4.7m from the top of the track to the wire. So in 1:76 scale this works out at about 62mm. I aint checked mine against this yet, but will do before setting anything in stone! Cheers. Dave
Hi Andy, just measured the height of the mast without the base...they sit 72mm above the rail height (which according to my sums in the first reply I gave you is prototypically correct. Lifting them up 6mm may look better but it seems to take them higher than is correct. What do you think? Dave
DaveClass47 Hi Dave Iv'e not fit mine in place properly, when I ran my Bachmann 85 the catenary on the loco when up snagged the dapol catenary as it went round, I know my track is on cork and that closes the gap slightly, think it's something I need to play with, so just wondered what you are doing with yours Andy
Andy Hudson Hi Andy, I am thinking 3mm of lift may be a decent compromise. I will see if I can lay my hands on stuff that thin and see if its an improvement. I have my track sitting on 3mm cork, so it probably needs lifted a little. The class 91 pantograph does sky high when its raised, so I would need to glue it in place anyway to avoid snag. I see Dapol are releasing more types of mast and wire! But the wire seems only to span 240mm...which is far too close together for the spacing of masts! I will wait and see what they release. Dave
DaveClass47 I was working on about 15" between masts, 240mm is way to close together, trying to sell more masts maybe?? but its hard to get it to look right, would like to run the cables but I think they will get in the way, but will keep an eye out to see what dapol bring out. My track is also on 3mm cork also, will need to lower the height of the pantograph on my 85 so let me know how it goes with gluing it down slightly Andy
Good luck with that. I had a 20 year break from when I was a teenager, so it was good to get back on board and get building again. Sub my channel if you like, I will return the favour and look forward to hearing about your progress. Dave
Nice update, your work on the signal box is simply superb. Is it based on a prototype, or is it freelanced? Either way, it's an outstanding job you've done on it so far. Always look forward to your videos and enjoy watching your layout progress.
Hi, The signal box is based on the one at Edinburgh Waverley in Edinburgh. Google Waverley west signal box and it should give you some images based on my model. Glad you enjoy my updates. Dave
Been following your building of Dean park for a while now and really enjoying watching your updates (This is my first comment) Absolutely stunning work, a fine layout coming on indeed. Just a quick question, how are you finding the temperature up the loft? I have a thermometer in mine and this week it has hit 30 degrees up there where the temp outside has been around 23/24 degrees on monday and wednesday. Has it affected anything? As my layout is slowly getting more detailed with buildings etc i do tend to worry a little, but i have been told from quite a few fellow modellers that everything should be fine. When i am up there working in the summer months, i tend to have a fan blowing cold air as its just to hot to work! Cheers and keep up the great work. Thumbs up.
Hi, The heat and the cold are a loft modellers number one enemy! I watch the temperatures closely. Last summer when it was around 24 degrees outside my loft was 35 degrees. At nights in the winter it was around 3 degrees. This fluctuation didn't affect most of my work but did destroy my original station building as I had not glued the brick paper down well enough to the card and it caused it to ripple, thus ruining my work. I am in the early stages of rebuilding this now. Some of the paper that wasn't glued enough did crease with the constant high temperatures, but now I use more glue so I hope my card buildings etc hold up this summer. I lined by loft with the silver thermo wrap stuff at the end of 2013. Its stapled to the rafters. Will it make the fluctuations less?...only time will tell, but the highest temp I have recorded so far (yesterday it was 19 outside) was 21. So the foil may be keeping the heat out a little. The foil in winter certainly kept the place warmer. I tend to take a break in summer from June-August as it can get quite warm and stuffy up there. I spend the summer months building card kits, small details etc downstairs. Really chuffed you like my work so far. Keep watching as I try to do a monthly update or running session, even through the summer. I started the layout in late 2012 and it is my hope that by Spring 2015 I will have started the upper layer and finished the main parts at the station section. Cheers. Dave
Hello Dave just a question, those lovely smooth curves on your layout I assume that they are flexible track but what radius are they? Do you use Tracksette? I've just started a loft layout myself after a few years away from the hobby, I have uploaded a couple of videos onto RUclips. If you find time to reply I would appreciate it Best wishes Steve
Hi Steve, yes its all flexi track, code 100 Peco stuff. I use a various of radius. I do use tracksetta. What I do is I trace around each tracksetta piece in card or paper. Then I cut out a few of each radius, I then place these on the baseboard to get an idea where the curve will do at difference radius's. For example, the curve you see when I am talking in the video at 2.20 in the video starts out smooth and gets tighter. If you use the paper template method you get a good idea of if your curve will fit in to the space available. Avoid the tightest tracksetta curve if you can, 18" red/maroon tracksetta I think it is? The trains don't look great going around those tight ones! Hope this makes sense and helps! Dave

Hi dave love how the layouts coming on , if your layout is set in the 80,s ,90.s you could look at the BR leyland road runner , road transport images do these in kits and would look good on your layout Check on my videos on my BR model vehicles Regards Graeme
Love the signal box. The effort and time it's taken has obviously been well worth it.
You've done a great job on the signal box and it's such an interesting design.
Very much enjoy your up dates.
Cheers.
That switching building turned out magnificent. If that was indeed your first scratch built then you have some massive natural talent for that. Hats off to you. Well done.
It looks great fantastic update looking forward to more kind regards Steve
Great update Dave, signal box and Royal Mail train look superb, cheers Stu

Signal box is excellent mate, great job!... Layout looks more realistic with every month that passes!
Lee
Signal box is looking great... Keep up the good work!
Love the layout Dave and I think the signal box is superb inside and out.
Susannah
Thanks Susannah...I am pleased with the box so far. Just needs fixed in place and a million other scenic details to do, then I'm finished! lol Dave
Signal box may have taken along time but it was worth it, looks fantastic. The layout is coming along great. Keep up the great work.
The signal box is superb the whole layout is a credit to you. Denis
Love the signal box; it is looking fantastic. The junction maps are a great addition and I'm looking forward to seeing the workstation in place!
Cheers Shaun. I am looking forward to getting the work station in place too and getting it operational looking. Dave
Nice job with the signals david , nice additions , like all the detail you add in the station signal box
Another BIG pat on the back ! Very enjoyable and well made video.
Your use of the building papers is well justified and you should be proud of your achievements so far.
Happy modelling.
Hi Dave some nice new additions also like the internal signal box detail cheers Kevin
Cheers Kev,
Yeah I thought some sort of detail in the box was needed...got to look as if its operational. Dave
The signal box looks great Dave, the interior is a nice addition and should look really cool at night looking through the windows. Amazing to see that BR have managed to get a matching rake of res stock stabled at dean park! Bagged mail trains were usually a right mess of different liveries.

Too true Dave, had to hide some of the stuff I got at Warley from the wife when I got home on Saturday!
don't we all!! My wife still thinks a loco costs £50, as that's what I told her a few years ago. lol
Looking good its coming along nice now.
Hi Dave,
Yeah its taking some time, but I am happy with the bits and pieces...now I will have to get ready to ballast. Prob leave it until autumn now, I'll see.

That new Royal Mail loco is a bit nice.
hi mate. good looking work on your layout i have not long started out in model train world .

Nice layouts. i'm just about to start my layout again after a 20+ year break. It will be based on a part of the buchan and formartine line
Good luck with that. I had a 20 year break from when I was a teenager, so it was good to get back on board and get building again. Sub my channel if you like, I will return the favour and look forward to hearing about your progress. Dave

Hi,
The signal box is based on the one at Edinburgh Waverley in Edinburgh. Google Waverley west signal box and it should give you some images based on my model.
Glad you enjoy my updates. Dave
Put the londen under ground train on layout
ps love the signal box you will have to show us the website you use for the building and wall print outs
peter from essex
Hi Peter, its Scalescenes.com for the brick texture and card kits. I recommend you give their stuff a go! Thanks for the kind comments.
Thumbs up.
Hi,
The heat and the cold are a loft modellers number one enemy!
Cheers. Dave
hello i know this is an old video and you may have answered this at some point but could you tell me what signals you are using please
Dave
Thanks Dave that's a great help, top tip, it makes sense!..... Cheers Steve

Hi dave love how the layouts coming on , if your layout is set in the 80,s ,90.s you could look at the BR leyland road runner , road transport images do these in kits and would look good on your layout
Check on my videos on my BR model vehicles
