Cephalopods Under Water Footage Commercial Fishing for Squid - EGI lures - Squid Jigging Cornwall

  • Fishing for Cuttlefish, Squid & Octopus... inshore working light rods with 'squid jigs' from a small open 'day' boat.
    Filmed over several sessions both day & night using a range of cameras (GoPro, Water Wolf & Olymbros) fishing off the Cornish Coast.
    I have tried to document how cephalopods respond & interact with 'squid jigs' - egi lures.
    Filmed working PZ849 'Stargazy Pie' through 2017...
    Since then I am still a dedicated seeker of cephalopods .... Having worked PZ80 'Shrimpy' again fishing commercially for line caught squid & cuttlefish....
    Some spinal problems have left me wishing that I were also an invertebrate ... Now in 2021 I have 'Shrimpy of Falmouth' & fish whenever I am able still for cephalopods.
    In my view both squid & cuttles are easily as smart as octopus. The majority that I catch I put back to grow on & those that I take I dispatch using 'Ike Jime' - It's quick & humane as, make no mistake, these are all highly intelligent deeply predatory creatures.
    I also do Gyotaku of cephalopods & indeed other fish.
    Fishing line caught for squid & cuttle is artisinal - A small scale low impact fishery here in Cornwall ... Zero bycatch, no impact on seagrass beds/marine habitat from use of gear & at the vagary of weather ... & indeed of cephalopod behaviour !

      Hi & Thank You ... It took a lot to put this video together. Yes I found that EGI lures worked both day and night .... At night they worked both with no extra illumination, and also with Green Light Hydraglow hung at around 20 foot under my boat. Wishing you the very best of luck in squid hunting ... I was out just yesterday picking up squid & cuttlefish - Though I was competing with a small (around 4 1/2 foot) tuna which was also fishing in. the shallows here off the Cornish Coast !

      Hi .... I use short super bendy rods, but you don't need one to fish for squid. .... Off a boat you can use a spool of stretchy monofilament fishing line (I use 20lb Asso Hardskin). Tie on a single jig and throw over the side letting it freely spool away so that it falls 'naturally' through the water column and then leave it sat around the bottom before doing a slow retrieve back to the boat. I've tied jigs straight onto mono , but I prefer 20lb mono to around 14lb fluorocarbon leader. If you have a squid on particularly a handline, go gently on pulling it back up, but keep tension steady all the way. Often the tide dictates adding weight (I typically go for a little 0.5oz pear shaped sinker tied either a couple of feet up the line from the jig or on about 1 1/2 foot of 14lb mono tied onto the jig at the tie on - nose).... If you are fishing deeper than say 50 foot or if you are in a spot beset by tide rips you may need to go for a lead to suit eg 6oz with a boom & jig tied onto mono or fluro on the end of that. Colour wise first drop on a single jig at night I'd go for a red bright red/pink jig I chose to fish 4 rods at the same time & I go for a red based one, a white based one, a more natural Greeny Brown, and lastly any other one that takes my fancy. I hope this may help you and others out there giving it a go ... Happy fishing :)

      I use jigs mainly from Japan & Australia . I have found Yamashita Live Search jigs to be around the best I have used, but there are terrific jigs from France and Croatia available in the UK ... locally even at Lizard Tackle and Bait ! They all work & they all have their individual benefits. Best advice I can give is to try the best you can ... They all catch but the better made stand up to repeated & prolonged use and abuse season on season. If fishing over rough grabby ground try float fishing a single jig over the top of it, or use a lead on lighter mono tied on beneath your jig so you lose that rather than your lure.

    • @simonbradley2809
      @simonbradley2809  5 лет назад +2

      Thank You - ... Most of the footage was with a Water Wolf underwater camera. I tied camera to heavy braid line so camera looking straight down - Then around a foot of very stretchy mono, swivel, then around 2 foot of flurocarbon tied direct to a single jig. One camera was destroyed by an octopus who locked onto the camera & twisted/pulled the o ring sealed end cap clean off. I filmed over the course of a number of day & night sessions. At night for filming (& to attract bait fish - & predators) I use Hydro Glow underwater lighting (green light).
      I am still catching inshore cephalopods (now in PZ80 SHRIMPY) - Aiming this year to catch squid inshore every month of the year.

      @@eternalfitness9470 I often mount my Go Pro on the end of my long handled landing net (I clamp it on the end of the pole tilted slightly upwards) .... I turn on whilst bringing squid in & have been rewarded with great footage whilst trying to draw the squid into my landing net. Thank you for your kind words ... yes Cornwall is awesome & has some stunning fish in often crystal clear water. I'd heard Brighton was popular for squid fishing off the shore ... I've often had squid on jig worked off a float over inshore reef marks.
