    I work on motorcycles often, painting and mechanical. I picked up a gallon of Prep-All by klean strip several years ago ($25ish). I got curious and tried it as a cleaner for my guns. It works great. Its just Naphtha, kerosene, and very little mineral oil. For lube I tried some other motorcycle things I had around. I put 2 parts fork oil (fancy sythetic mineral oil) to 1 part engine assembly lube. Been using this for combo for a while and it works great. Didnt cost me a penny more than what I had already spent. Plus I have a lifetime supply.
    Dont get conned by fancy "gun lubes and cleaners".

    That there is the big 64 oz size of Hoppe's #9. Brings back lots of memories using that. Used to use motor oil instead of your mineral oil before I got wooed away with all the "new" stuff... I've got a quart of motor oil that I've used that same rag you recommend, except I never put it into a plastic bag...rag just thrown into an aluminum pan along with other rags for gun cleaning...That 2 stroke oil sounds good. Never tried Kroil, but have heard a lot of good things about it - really penetrates well... Happy New Year to ya, Dave...FC Steve

      Happy new year to you too Steve. I really don't have any thing against anyone using the New stuff, However it's really not needed. everything you need to maintain your firearms is right here and doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Dave.

    I use mineral oil as a case lube.
    4 or 5 ounces mineral oil to a 12 oz bottle of iso heat in a plastic spray bottle. Total was around $5 at Walmart. Works great

    When I had several K's in my collection and also on locking lugs of auto pistols I put some high temp bearing grease for lube that will stay in place over storage periods till they rotate back for next range trip. Used it on rotating bolt lugs of the K's.

    I use 3 things to maintain my firearms. Hoppes #9 bore cleaner, LSA for lubricating internals, & mineral oil for the exterior. I have a 32oz bottle if Hoppes that will last me a few decades. I wish they made Hoppes #9 cologne!!!!

    Wow...wish I had seen this video yesterday. I spent two hours driving around gun and reloading stores looking for a can of Kroil. Everywhere I went was out of it. Just placed a Brownells order a week before Christmas and 2 things on my list to get cause I'm running really low on was J-B bore cleaner and some Kroil. Brownells cant ship Kroil UPS 2day air, has to ship ground, so I took it off my list of items to get cause I was paying for UPS 2day air. I thought, I'll just get it local. Wrong, everywhere I went was out of it that I went too. Napa is one place I didn't think would carry it. Thanks for letting us know that Napa carries Kroil.

      No Problem OletsRoll, I use J.B. and Kroil intermittently. between cleanings. It smooth's out the inside of you lands and grooves, sort of like sanding all the dry wall joint compound off the walls before painting. If that makes any sense.. Good shooting to you dude. Dave

    Great ideas but my brother is a gun Smith and they use ATF for cleaning, 5w20 full synthetic for lube and alcohol for the dry cleaning and getting all oils off weapon. It's the cheapest and best you can get, ATF eats gun crud and preserver the metal on your weapon so it doesn't rust like a cast iron skillet.

    What an under-rated video and info. I heard about Mineral Oil on rag but when asked on forums and comment it was a 50/50. I am contemplating using baby oil for the exterior until I can get out to Drug Store. But do you know if baby oil will work since it is mineral oil + fragrance.. Its all I have at home at the moment. Also do you use or have used synthetic engine oil for internals? just wondering which you recommend engine oil and automatic transmission fluid?

    Sir what do you think about lubrication with a synthetic 5w30 motor oil? Co-worker told me an older gentleman at the range swears by it, and after he tried it, he tells me I should use it. Thank you for the video!

      Any oil works. Engine oil is unnecessary. I have guns that are almost 100 yrs old, rust free and have only ever had mineral spirits and mineral oil.
      Other old guns that have had hoppes oil, rem oil, ballistol, etc. All are in the same condition. My guns are all blued, and depending on which oil rag I grab, the guns get wiped with mineral oil, or ballistol. My small bottle of mineral was maybe $3, 30 yrs ago and I've only used maybe 1/3 of it.

    Wonder if you ever tried instead of Kroil, ATF mixed 50/50 with ether lacquer thinner or acetone?

    • @Thorsaxe777
      @Thorsaxe777  7 лет назад +1

      Nope. sounds like Ed's Red though. Lot's of guys mix that stuff up for bore cleaner. It will attack Plastic and remove it from shotgun barrels because of the acetone in it, from what I understand it works quite well. Guys that shoot benchrest use a mixture of 50/50 Kroil and Hoppe's to clean their barrels between shooting strings. Lapping your barrel will reduce fouling as well, a good product I use is J,B, bore cleaner on a patch with Kroil. I also have Ballistol, In any event, I was just pointing out that for basic cleaning of your firearms you don't have to break the bank, Some of that snake oil is expensive and doesn't do what it's advertised to do. Good shooting to you Robert, Dave.

      ATF + Acetone 50/50 - I use on bolts or rusted bolts that are stuck.
