Those coils are like an antenna (capacitive..) I recommend doubling or tripling the windings, it improves the reading of the signal, I checked it with the oscilloscope...
I have almost the same generator, and basically the same meter. Hooked my turns on the spark plug wire up in almost exactly the same place. (Though 4cm is 1.5", and that's way closer to the boot, but harder to reach.) Anyway, when I fired mine up, it's not reading that the engine is on. I can't see that I did anything differently than you, though.
