    Ive installed a few generator inlet boxes this year, about to install another one next week. I was an electrician for 10 years before getting into the backup generator industry. You did a pretty good job for a homeowner. I will say though, its a bit more difficult to perform this task if the electrical panel is flush mounted inside the building as opposed to the outdoor surface mounted panel we see in this video here. Getting (4) #6 gauge conductors safely from outside to an indoor panel that is sunk into the sheetrock without causing any damage can be very difficult and would definitely not be something the average person should approach without understanding it may not go as smoothly as this video.

    I believe on a "main" box the neutral and ground should be connected to separate bars.

    • @Bob-bf8qw
      @Bob-bf8qw 2 месяца назад +2

      Nope. In the main breaker panel - the one that houses the service entrance from the utility and contains the primary means of disconnect - grounding conductors and neutral conductors are terminated on the same bar. While it’s true that the ground and neutral could be landed on separate bars, it makes no difference in this case since those bars are bonded together. Importantly, the generator itself must not have a neutral-to-ground bond (floating neutral), as the bonding is already handled at the main panel. However, in a subpanel, grounding conductors and neutral conductors are terminated on separate bars, and the neutral bar should not be bonded to the panel enclosure or the grounding system. I am not an electrician, but I know things :).

    Great step by step videoI! One part I’m still not clear on is the 50 amp breaker installed, how is that tied in to rest of the house wirings? Isn’t it still independent like the rest of the house circuit breakers?

    • @TexasPatriotOffRoadAndOutdoors
      @TexasPatriotOffRoadAndOutdoors  6 месяцев назад +3

      @@doradean3097 Thank you for the view and the compliment.
      You are backfeeding power from the generator into the inlet box via a heavy 50 amp generator cord. From the inlet box, 4 strands of wire (3 coated and 1 bare) lead into your breaker box (panel). 2 of the coated wires (black and red) each carry 120 volts to their terminal on the side of the 50 amp breaker. Since the breaker is connected to power logs in the breaker box, it powers the box with 240 volts (remember, each wire carried 120 volts).
      The remaining coated wire (white), is the neutral and is connected into the ground bar (bus). The bare copper wire also connects to the ground bar.
      This process of back feeding energizes the main power lugs in the breaker box, which all other breakers connected to now have power and feed their perspective circuits.
      I hope this helps.

    Anyone doing this needs to check the NEC to see how many of what size wires are allowed to run in what size conduit. It's all about safety and fire-prevention. And, don't make your own Interlock...insurance companies will use any excuse they can to not pay out in case of damage or injury. If I were a Lineman I'd be pissed at someone manufacturing their own interlock. Another "Pro tip"...install the breakers before connecting the wires. Save yourself lots of struggle. I recommend using a plug-box that angles the cable in a downward angle. The box used here has a constant strain because it's sticking straight out from the wall. The downward angle box has nice weather-resistant capability also.

      Follow this install on your sub panel. You'd definitely need to figure out a lockout procedure at the main panel though. You'd basically be using the generator breaker to energize the sub panel load bars to send electricity back to the main via the sub panel breaker. You'd have to make sure the main is off without an interlock since the main and sub feeder breaker can't be in at the same time during normal circumstances. Then there's the fact that the sub panel has no bonded neutral since it'd be using the mains bonding terminals.
      Best to find a way to do the main panel.

    Is your generator Neutral bonded to Ground? if yes, then you just wired your Gen 50A outlet box wrong. You should not have 2 bonded neutrals (home main panel and Gen), your portable Gen is set to work independently and not to backdfeed your Main panel as a fixed Gen. That is Why is bonded, UNLESS your's is not. Clarify if your Gen has bonded neutral (for viewers) because otherwise your wrong connection project is potentially making other run the same risk. This differs between Gen with bonded neutrals from factory set or floating neutral. NEC code. Hope this helps to avoid accidents due to lack if information on hand before repeating what others do in RUclips.

      I'm in central Arkansas. My main 200 amp breaker is on the outside of the house and feeds a 60a and 40a breaker in that same panel and also sends in power to the main house "sub panel" in our master closet where all the dedicated house breakers are. I am moving the two outside 60a and 40a HVAC breakers to a sub panel and where they originally were, will be putting in a 50a breaker for the generator with interlock kit and a 100a breaker below that feeds the new HVAC sub panel. Kind of a pain but that's all that can be done.
