as someone who has worked on cast steel before, the author should have: 1 - used a nickel rod 2. had the metal heated to a rather high temp using oxyacetalyne 3. had all of the cracks ground and beveled to better penetrate and mend the entirety of the damage.
To just remove the rust, he used rust remover, then sand blasting, then sanding. Just sand from the beginning. And if you are going to sand, remove all dings.
Repair Man, I really think you did a wonderful job removing the years of rust, wear and breakage. The only problem I have with what you did (further, its none my business about what you did and maybe my comment is just my own opinion) is that you made a chain handle for the axe. Sure, the chain handle is good for a few licks on some wood but, if you had to work with it for any period of time, a wooden handle would be much nicer. Also, the axe probably had a wooden handle to begin with. Great job man. I learned some things about accessories for the angle grinder.
My question is. I see lots of restoration videos and why if you have a sand blast cabinet do you but the piece in a rust remover? Why not just put it in the blast cabinet first? Save time.
걍 장식용으로 만드셨으니 상관없겠지만 용접시 4부분 정도 가접을 해서 분리되지 않도록 한후 용접부위 내외부를 그라인더등을 이용해 홈을 파고 용접한후 가공을 한다면 강도가 몇배는 올라갑니다. 홈을 파지않은 경우 침투깊이가 얕아 내부는 해당 크랙이 잔존합니다. 그리고 하지로 긁었으니 용접물의 깊이는 1센티도 안될듯 합니다.
Obviously a display model, but certainly not a usable tool. You really need to get the gas for the new welder and practice welding. But I would have ground out the cracks and welded them in many passes to build it up to a quality finish. And I am more partial to wood handles myself. But being how this is your project, Thumbs Up!
The crack should've been grinded open V shaped, then preheat the material and begin filling the entire cracks with weld till it can be smoothed out. The chain handle is going to provide a good shock down your whole arm everytime you swing the axe into something hard, wood should've been used instead. This axe is merely ornamental now
For the record I doubt this will be used regularly, I sure wouldn't want to use it. A bunch of the guys below are right though. The cracks should have been ground out and then welded. Stick would have probably been alright. A good heat treatment would keep it in the field for a long time. And yes it does need a wood handle. Projects like this get folks into metal working though. Good way to learn!
For strong welds you must open the cracks in a V fissure. Then weld from the bottom up. Anything else is just a surface weld. This is now just a wall hanger with an impractical non shock absorbing handle.
Welding axe Need to grind the grooves with flex. Then just weld. In the upper small metal crack welding is not worth it. Break a few times the blow. But a good video

I would have used polyurethane around the chain handle. It looks great but those welds just won't hold if you use it even slightly rough. Also, you should have put a joint in that crack before you welded it.

That should have been ground out to a V and pre heated before welding
should have thrown it in the forge first then worked on the crack that way

I really think you did a wonderful job removing the years of rust, wear and breakage. The only problem I have with what you did (further, its none my business about what you did and maybe my comment is just my own opinion) is that you made a chain handle for the axe. Sure, the chain handle is good for a few licks on some wood but, if you had to work with it for any period of time, a wooden handle would be much nicer. Also, the axe probably had a wooden handle to begin with.

최근에 대장장이들이 체인 핸들 엑스 만든거 보시고 뽕차셔서 만드신듯 나중에는 못쓰는 폐품들 구리나 알류미늄같은거 녹여서 주괴만드는 컨텐츠해도 좋으실거 같아요

만일 실사용할거라면 소잡이는 나무로 해야 됩니다. 이유는 금속으로 하면 사용시 충격이 그대로 손목으로 전달되서 좋을거없습니다.
망치 손잡이를 간혹 금속 파이이프로 용접해서 사용하는경우가 있는대 별로 추천할건 아닙니다.

실제로 몇번두들기면 바로 금이나갑니다
ㅋ 기존에 피로누적으로 인해 금간부위를 갈아내지않고용접했기때문~^^ 용접 조금이라도 해보셧으면 아실텐데ㅋ 도끼는 타격을하는 도구이므로 내충격성이 표면용접으론 무리입니다

Should've cut a V notch on both sides before welding. But sice it's just a souvenir I guess it doesn't matter..
