    I’ve been running with osteoarthritis in knees and hips. Important thing is cross training and strength training to strengthen the muscles around the joints.

    Thank you so much for this video. I started running recently after many years and I had severe knee pain. I paid a visit to the orthopedist and discovered that I have early onset of arthritis. I have taken a break now but would love to start again. Your advice was very helpful

    I have listened to this lesson many times to reinforce how to still run w/ a diagnosis of moderate high grade arthritis. I agreed with one other follower that I have gain more from you than all my MD's/ Orthropedics.. Thank you so much

    This video is absolutely my favorite! I gave up running, which I love and started biking per recommendation due to crepitations in both knees(OA) . But, with COVID19 isolation, working in the hospital and stress of losing my little sister to suicide on March 23rd when I couldn’t travel abroad to mourn, I started trail running. My knees still make noise when ascending upstairs but it is helping me cope with this hard time. Much love to you! I feel much better hearing that it is ok to run with bad knees! XD

      I've always been under the impression that running actually prevents arthritis, but in your case it's the total opposite, how come?
      Also how is it going for you? Gotten any better?

    Thank you. Very informative. I have wear and tear and some arthritis in my right knee. I have been w;king slowly every day or at least 5 times a week. It is beginning to get better slowly. .

    great video ! it answers all my questions, i run every day 7/7 , 2 sessions per day: ( boxing -1st session) , then ( running-2nd session). 4hours rest between the 2 sessions!
    day 2: ( lifting weights- 1st session) then ( running- 2nd session ) , 4 hours rest between sessions. everyday for à many years! (with femoro patteral syndrome since 11 years) .
    I felt an increase in pain in the left knee, accompanied by crackling and grinding feelings in my left knee , especially during squatting exercises.
    In addition to that, the age factor , im 46 years old. I think it's 90% arthritis symptoms!

    I am 35 years old and my knee getting worse due to arthritis. I have the same problem due to need to loss weight but thanks to this video, now I have more confident to know my knees. definitely will change my shoes and running terrain.been brisk walking around 2 month ,still trying to run a little bit but sometimes my knees hurt. and yes, if I sitting for a long period, I have sore knees after that. thanks for the information..

    Just got an injury this summer, three months later went to the ortho with my MRI arthritis in my knee. I am absolutely devastated because he said no more running. Thank you for this video I’ll go at my own pace at my own speed when my body tells me to stop I will

    I do not have osteoarthritis and no problem with my knees…yet. But I have psoriatic arthritis and pain in my feet. I just heard about a local running club and I think I’ll go this weekend before I chicken out. I am hopeful with hearing this.

    This video can be life changer for me. I am 48, and regular gym goer but avoided Cardio always, mainly due to headache (caused by increased BP) and early signs og arthritis (pain behind knee). Though I always wanted to run. After watching this video, I am definitely going to try running... thanks...!

    Great Video! and spot on advice! I reduced by weekly running distance from 30 miles to 10 miles. I'm sad about that but grateful to still be able to run and cross train in between at age 45. Now I don't do more than 3 miles on a single run and make sure to rest at least a day before jumping back out. My strength training (100 squats a day) and daily stretching has also really helped a ton! Thank you so much!

      Yes it is!! It help me with hip artrose! Running is amazing!! I couldn't believe it! After 1 year I can walk perfectly now!
      Another key item for me at least DIET! I become a vegan. Vegetables and Fruits. 100% cereals free - gluten is a Huge NO NO
      That's it! I'm cured and so happy!

    So happy to have fiund you. Im 61 ( nearly 62) and have been running seriously for a year now. I've managed to lose the extra weight gained during the menopause years as a result. My legs are fairly strong, but I now think ive been pushing myself too much. Ive got so much out of listening to this. I will now proceed carefully and slowly Sunday run. Huge thanks. Does a compression strap help around the knee while running? I feel it does, but I wonder what you think and anyone else on here? Thank you❤

      I'm glad you found the video useful! When it comes to straps and braces, it is all about how you feel when using them. If you feel better with them on, then use them. If not, then leave them.

    I ran for years but I've stopped six years ago as when I was running my knees swelled like balloons and I literally couldn't walk for a week. I'd love to run again that's why I'm watching this.

      I don't want to sound trite but have you seen a doctor? You could have an actual injury, or a condition.

      @@Juliet_Capulet our medical system is difficult. I have seen a doctor, indeed I've had surgery that was unnecessary and unhelpful. I don't have money which keeps me where I am regarding my knees.

    I have been running for 8 months now using walk/run intervals. Over the last few months I have been experiencing right knee stiffness and posterior popliteal pain post run. Sports Orthopedist told me I needed to stop running, which was very disappointing. Thanks so much for creating this video. I am definitely going to try your suggestions and cut down on my mileage and interval lengths to see if this helps!

      This is just superb, I have been researching "what is the best brace for knee pain?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Iiyyan Uncommunicative Improvement - (just google it ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to eradicate your knocked knees without the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got cool success with it.

    Hi just seen this video, I was very active have bone on bone in both knees for best part of 5 years, I am 56 now, enjoy running and have restarted about 6 weeks back increasing load slowly, my question is can i safely keep going to a max of 10km without causing more problems, I actually think that my pain has decreased since i started back, last thing when i am running it takes short period of time before i am comfortable with no or nearly no pain. ty for the video it gave me the assurances that i need to keep going.

    im 17. i have arthritis all over my body. knee, elbow, collarbone, fingers.
    it's genetics, i think.
    do you have any suggestions for me?
    because if i can't run or do simple activities that my age group can at this age, this life isn't worth it.

    I’ve just been diagnosed with knee arthritis, I gave up on running 4/5 years ago. I’d love to run again but I’m carrying extra weight, it’s got to go so I can have a go at running again.

    This made a lot of sense! Thank you! Three questions: 1) My pain feels like runners knee (or inflamation where the ITB connects with the , but an MR showed osteoarthritis (surgery twenty years ago - unsure if the troubles are old football injuries or more recent middle age wear and tear) - could these be going on at the same time, and causing confusing pain signals? 2) Does drop in a shoe make a difference? 3) How about circadian rhythms? Feels like I more often feel sore in the (very few) occasions a run in the mornings...

      Glad you found it useful! Yes, you can have more than one thing going on in the knee and causing your pain. 2) Shoe drop can potentially make a difference, because it will change where you carry the pressure in your knee, but there's unfortunately no way to predict whether your knee would like a higher vs. a lower drop. Trial and error is usually the only way to find out. 3) I think your morning runs may be more sore because your joint has not yet had time to get "fed" and "oiled" for the day. Remember that our joints don't have arteries going into them. They rely fully on the pressure created when you move the joint to get their nutrients in and out and get rid of the low level of inflammatory substances that are created in arthritic joints. Because you lie still for so many hours in the night, your joints are a bit starved and still has a relatively high concentration of chemical waste products in them which may be why they are more tender to run on in the morning. This does NOT mean that you should be taking anti-inflammatories - it's much better to just move them and let them feel better through natural processes. Hope this makes sense! xm

    Love your videos you've actually taught me that I've been doing all the wrong things.. I moved house into a house with loads of stairs and I spent time lifting boxes up and down those stairs.. Knees immediately started to produce fluid and pain.. Also never had a garden before.. I'm not a runner just would like to be able to walk without pain.. Hips now hurting as I've constantly tried to keep going.. I realise now I haven't given my knees a chance to recover and my whole leg is now painful.. Orthodeadic consultant told me I have arthritis which I knew and not bad enough for surgery but no advice on any sort of treatment or recovery... Where do I go from here.. Do you have a clinic in UK

    I had a look at the 2008 study you mention ... The people in the running study were younger, leaner and tended to smoke less. This may infer that they are generally more health conscIous. The runner also exercise significantly more than the control. Much research has shown that exercise is good for joint health. So many confounding variables means it is long bow to say running is good for you knees. As excess weight has an strong association to OA, it is surprising the leaner runners had less deterioration than the heavier group who exercise less.

    I have arthritis in my knees and have bone on bone. Is there any certain shoes I should be looking for? Today I walked on the treadmill and my knees have been hurting ever since. It’s been 12 hrs now. I was overweight for a long time and I’ve since lost 100 lbs. unfortunately the damage has already been done but I want to keep walking. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

      It does help for some people but it's a bit hit and miss - what works for one doesn't seem to work for the next.

    Could the fact that people who continue running tend to have less pain in their knees which explains the lower incidence of OA on X-ray compared to those who discontinue running or dont run at all due to the pain ?

      Yes, that is also something that crossed my mind. There's never a straight answer that works for everyone. I guess the take-home message is that you need to observe what is going on with your body and how it reacts. Just because you have OA doesn't mean xyz into either direction.

    Very informative Thanks: QUESTION: I hurt my back some years ago when I never had a back issue. The cause was recommended exercises to protect and strengthen your back. Lumbar raises were the culprit as I later read was one of the worst exercises for the back and often causes injury...grrr. So, I hurt my okay back by trying to make it better, that is the most annoying thing ever. As this video relates to the knees my question is what are the best and worst exercises for the knees for older active people with or without osteoarthritis since naturally some will hinder vs. help? Some say leg extensions are bad for the knees. Thanks :)

      There truly are no bad exercises - it all depends on how you do them, if you start at the correct level for you and what suits your specific body. The problem is that people often jump in a too high level or progress the exercises too quickly or that they don't have the correct control in the rest of the body for the exercise they want to do. My personal favourite for knees is the leg press machine because it offers so many variations e.g. how deep the knees go, where feet are places, double vs. single leg etc. So every person can find a solution that works for them.       If you feel severe pain after running then what you are doing is likely not right. So see if it helps if you use more cushioned shoes, or run slower, or don't run so far, or run on a treadmill.

    Great video, subscribed! I had almost all of my lateral meniscus removed 12 years ago, and at age 32, I have started to get a dull ache in my knee after running. Running itself is ok, but it aches after. No movements make it hurt, I have full range of motion. Recent MRI showed some thinning of the cartridge in the lateral compartment. Does it sound like my pain is arthritis or something else? It came on suddenly this spring after I did a long walk

      hey brad, i have recently been having the same issue, i had part of my meniscus cut out 8 years ago. have you learned anything since this comment?

      @@samkinsler5897 no, my knee almost always has a dull aching now all the time. It sucks but isn’t super painful at least. Walking seems to flair it up just as much as running

    I would like to know if running on a hard surface like the road is more harmful for the knees

      Not if you have good cushioned shoes - it may be a problem if you run in old or very thin shoes. But the best way to know what your knees prefer is to test different surfaces and observer how your knees react in the 24 hours after - obviously keep the distance and intensity the same when you test it so it is only the surface that is different.

    What's your thought on minimal shoes? I wear them for every day wear and not sure if I should run in them.

      It varies from person to person. I wore them for a while for work, but eventually had to give them up as my metatarsals didn't like them. You have to figure that one out for yourself, but if you're running on hard surfaces I would suggest you use cushioned shoes.

    My knee buckles at times before I get the pain. I have been using a knee support to do short walk jog sequences and it hasnt happeed again but I'm always aware that it might. What can i do to stop that happening again.

      Hi Caroline, Strengthening you quads (front thigh) may help. Doing a wall sit exercise (just don't slide too low) or the leg press machine at the gym may help.

    I’m 42, 250lbs quite heavily muscled and 6”4, the only cardio I actually enjoy is running on the treadmill with my headphones in! I’ve just been told I’ve got arthritis in my right knee knee, and 2 Doctors advised me to stop running as I’m “too large” or words to that effect. I’ve tried the elliptical and walking, but I find them, boring, time consuming, and I can’t build up that sweat that truly makes my mood lift afterwards. Do you have any advice? I really don’t want my running days to be over. Thanks

      Hi Aaron, it's a difficult one to advise on without knowing all the little details around your situation, but how I usually approach this with my patients is as follows: We get them doing light activities (like the boring cross trainer etc.) until their knee pain has settled but at the same time we also get them to build good muscle strength in all their leg muscles (using exercises that don't provoke their pain but slowly increase in intensity). Once their knee has been settled for a sustained period of time + they have good muscle strength, then we ease back into running really slowly (this often involves run/walk prorammes and just sticking to low intensity and even reducing it when the knee tells us that we've overdone it). And then it is important to get an understanding of what volume of running and what intensity is best for your knee (this can only be done via observation). Hope this helps.

    I can run easily as long as I take supplements such as easy knee(containing glucosamine chondroitin msm). I wonder whether this approach may exacerbate my knee arthritis in the future , what do u think ?

      Not really. It is very person dependent. I would say that it may be unwise to do very large volumes of running after knee replacements as it may impact on how long the joint lasts, but I'm not aware of any research to support this statement - it's my own gut feel.

      That can be a bit more tricky, but it depends on how sensitive your system is and how your body tolerates exercise. All the strength training comments still apply in the same way but you may want to stick to a run/walk programme e.g. 4min run/2min walk instead of running continuously - but this is really different between ppl.
