IMHO, the best era to model since basically anything was possible. Lashups and consists were so colorful and varied, especially for a kid who was 7 when Conrail was formed.

Love these, really do! I just wish you would lower the cost a little to $20 each, and not $30, and offer a digital download. Maybe even a bundle. Big Mike is by far the smartest, most entertaining man I have listened to when it comes to railroading. So knowledgeable and the type of guy you would want to hang out with as often as possible to hear the ol tales of the rails.

This footage came at the height of Jimmy Carter's part in the undermining of America, so much of what you saw in the video with the dirty and rusty equipment was just a part of the dystopian era of the 70's in general. With shrinking trackage and closing depots, it was really a dark time for the railroads in the U.S.A. but for some reason it still has a draw in hindsight, especially when you consider the amount of different class 1 railroads still in operation at that time. Today, albeit cleaner and more policed, we're down to a mere handfull of what once was a vast system of railroad interchange that used to spread across nearly every county of the fruited plain. Some railroads are being rejuvenated or reborn from the weeds while other shorelines become entangled in a battle for survival.
washing the equipment????????... geez this place was FORTUNATE to even have ANY equipment still up and running... you gotta remember this was the time when conrail was freshly formed with SIX bankrupt railroads... all of this could have easily been washed down the drain rather than being revitalized... so this stuff while dirty for sure is more of a economic miracle than anything
@@25mfd And then there’s the trackage! So many of these 70’s videos show trains on mainline rails that were in such deplorable shape that the engines and cars rocked so much side to side that they looked like they’d turn over, and I guess often did! It was truly a remarkable and sad time for the northeastern roads!
