  • This is a preview of Railfanning with the Bednars Volume 11. This DVD is available from our website www.johnpmedia.com
    DVD summary below:
With the trip west to find work on other railroads being a bust, Big Mike and the gang return to the land of Blues.
Still in the grips of the recession, Conrail was looking for other alternatives to increase revenue and cut costs. Conrail began heavily promoting intermodal operations to increase revenue and further consolidated operations to cut costs.
While Conrail was never really conducive to the D&H’s operations, they tightened their stranglehold on the D&H by siphoning off as much traffic as possible. The combined D&H named trains became shorter and shorter. With very little traffic left and on the edge of bankruptcy, Guilford purchased the D&H in 1983. Their plan was to expand regional operations from New England to the Philadelphia and New York markets. Guilford control did little to improve the D&H operations and the expanded markets would never materialize. The D&H would eventually end up in bankruptcy
In volume 11 we return to the Lehigh Valley with Mike and the gang to railfan the changing operations of Conrail, the Guilford takeover of the D&H and a few excursions out of Jim Thorpe with former CNJ 1554
As usual, Big Mike provides the commentary.

The late Hunter Harrison and his hedge fund cronies have, and are, doing more damage to the US rail system than we’ll ever see rectified in our lifetime! PSR is nothing but a smoke and mirrors show to cover up the truth. The real goal is stripping assets, maintenance, manpower etc. to artificially lower the Operating Ratio, which leads directly to quickly escalating stock prices. It’s not sustainable, but the hedge fund crowd knows when to sell off and get the hell out of Dodge before the inevitable crash! I just retired from a 41 year career with Southern Railway/NS, and it is unbelievable what’s happening out there! By far the most dangerous operating conditions I’ve seen in my years out there!

Brilliant stuff, having grown up in a railway town in UK which lost all its freight yards and loco works in the 80s, it brings back great memories, ps love the commentary.

I love the commentary. It"s sad that Mike was so insecure that he was too "timid",to say how he really saw things.😊

Those MEC U23Bs were bought brand-new with EMD/Blomberg trucks. I have shots of them in St. Johnsbury, VT in 1981.

Bear in mind, the MEC 229 was an ex-Rock Island locomotive, rebuilt in Bangor. Guilford destroyed all the MEC and B&M locomotives, then purchased junk from CN, and NS,, ran it into the ground, sold it to rebuilders and leased it back.

Do you have any information on the rail line that ran through Asbury NJ?
The tracks are still there and go from Bloomsbury to High Bridge. Any info would be great.
