    I think of this battle through the numbers of casualties. The Somme was to the British army as Cold Harbor was in the Civil War. Deadliest, costly battle. Haig was almost like Grant. He thought if artillery would pound the German positions before the infantry would advance, it be a success. It was far from the truth. As a result, Haig was called the "Butcher" by the public.
