  • Quick review of my 2015 Jeep Patriot 2.4L , 4wd with 6-speed automatic transmission.
    I'm not a professional automotive journalist.
    This is my personal car but in 2015 I bought a brand new Jeep Cherokee... and hated it. It's funny that 5 years later I bought a cheaper, "lesser" Jeep from the same model year and like it!
    If you have a Jeep Patriot and would like to add skidplates and recovery hooks, here are the part numbers!

    This is one of the most objective reviews I have ever seen on the much maligned Patriot. I own one and have never understood the hate and the 4x4 snow traction is quite surprising. As another reviewer stated "For modern city living, it’s actually an excellent sized vehicle. It’s small enough for effortless city driving, it handles and drives well, yet it’s large enough to carry 4 people and their stuff with ease.The Patriot still follows the same mission plan that it was given when it was created. It’s a basic unpretentious useful vehicle that’s actually quite nice to drive. It’s not stylish or sexy. It’s not particularly high tech or leading edge. But it’s useful, pleasant to drive, easy to live with, comfortable, versatile and not too expensive."

    2015 auto trans owner here. Great review, although I couldn't disagree more on the looks. They were going for an updated but old school Cherokee look and succeeded. Way better looking and more unique than anything else in the segment, imo. Also, the leather seats are quite comfortable. I also like the no nonsense simplicity, reflected in the price. Mine has never let me down.

      Usually I don't like leather but I kinda wish I had it in this case, the seat itself is comfortable but the grade of cloth they used is just weird.. it's almost like a cross between flannel and sundress fabric, and the cushion material doesn't exactly fit the cut/stitch pattern so they look sort of lumpy.
      It's really not a big complaint, I spend almost no time actually looking at the seats but it's some weird choices from a modern manufacturer.
      Still really enjoy the car though!

      Thank you! If you're getting an automatic (two pedals) from 2012 it will have the CVT - remember to service the fluid often on those. Many owners recommend 32k mile service intervals for maximum longevity.

    Love that you appreciate the Patriot. I have a 2011 5 speed manual with 230,000 miles on it. Definitely aiming for 300,000 miles! Transmission and clutch still good, only issue is crankshaft sensor and suspension parts. Ball joints every year!

    I traded my Challenger r//t for a 2016 Patriot last November. I doubted my decision until we got 30 cm of heavy sticky almost like wet concrete snow. I haven't thought about my Dodge since...well right now really. The Patriot is currently at my local 4x4 shop getting a leveling kit and K02's, I'm going all in on this thing I fucking love it. Cheers brother.

      As far as I can tell the two things that really do these vehicles in are neglect and in salt states the rear subframe can rust out like so many other vehicles. I read that on the JATCO CVT's the transmission manufacturer suggests changing the fluid every ~36000 miles but how many people do you think are actually doing it that often?

      @@prikbastrd After four months of nearly constant calls to support and a much longer story than I care to type out here I was finally put in touch with the CEO's executive assistant, more "long story" stuff happened and I was mailed a check and offered a substantial discount on trading it for another FCA vehicle.
      More long story, the discount didn't happen but the check did deposit. I bought a brand new Ram 1500 and decided my health was worth more than continuing to stress over the $$ this adventure cost me.
      Still have the Ram, it's been a trouble free asset and last year when I decided to get a more fuel efficient run-about + travel + winter car the last thing in the world I expected was to shop Jeep! But pragmatism is worth more than spite and the Patriot ended up the right answer.

      That's awesome!
      If it's 4wd don't forget to service the RDU and PTU, as well as transmission fluid - that's key to making the most of your investment!
      The PTU is small and packed in near the exhaust so its lubricant gets cooked, it's not nearly as bad as Explorers but it still needs new oil periodically and the RDU has clutches in it that contaminate the fluid as they wear. Thankfully they don't take any special magic fluids and they are super easy to drain and fill.

      I'm glad you found it helpful! I still have this Jeep and drive it more often than my other cars, it's a great appliance and has had no reliability concerns. I do a lot of preventative maintenance on any car but there's been no special problem spots on mine or any surprises.

    I drove mine in two winter storms. I passed lots of luxury SUVs and pickups in ditches. Mine is an AK: not glamorous, but rugged and reliable, especially in poor conditions.

    I LOVE mine! I have a 2014. And I wholeheartedly agree with you! I always say, My jeep doesn't do anything perfectly, but it has a great turn radius, okay gas mileage, does great in the snow, and I as I am not concerned with being the fastest, and I have no desire to climb crazy places. It is perfect for me!

    I’ve had mine since 2009 when I bought it new, 5-speed, 4WD, and I love it. It’s never let me down in snow or ice or anywhere else .

    Watched this, it informed my decision to go ahead and buy the Patriot. Found a 2016 with 70k on it. Will follow your maintenance advice. Just love the look (sorry I disagree with you!) but appreciate your technically sound, objective review. Cheers!

      Glad I could help! Mine has 110k miles on it now and still operates as new, I expect this one will be in the family a long time yet to come. To me it truly is an appliance but that's not a bad thing - it gets the job done without complaint

      @@shoveI My 2014 has 80K miles on it (we bought it new) and I'm looking into preventive maintenance to keep it going for years to come. What maintenance have you done to yours? Timing chain, transmission fluid/filter, hoses/belts, plugs/wires? Mine is all original except for battery, brakes, and tires.

      I was thinking about trying for just one more horsepower with an exhaust, not really into loud exhaust systems & certainly not trying to turn heads with a little 4 cylinder but it's a fact that these things don't have a ton of reserve power for passing on the highway. I don't think there's any power at all to be had in fooling with the intake but there might be a fraction of power hidden in that skinny muffler tube and the suitcase in the back.

      Just curious how the lift went? Mine is terrible, front struts are maxed resulting in a horrible bang with bumps

    I got my 2015 sport 4WD 2.4 I4 back in 16’ and I love it. 80k on it now. If you take care of them (Jeep usually need more maintenance) then they will outperform many other brands. I prefer Jeep over other brands when it comes to off roading and long trips. My Patriot really surprised me when I took it on its first logging/mountain road for roughly 10 miles. Gravel roads are so quiet with the stock suspension. These strut suspensions are more noisy over larger pot holes and bumps on road. I would say the Patriot is designed for light off road use, but is still capable of the more intense experiences with larger AT tires and taller ride height.

    I ended up buying a 2015 Jeep Patriot in October of 2021 after my Kia Sorento engine blew up. It had about 31,500 miles on it when I bought it and although it wasn't my first choice in a vehicle, I am really loving the one that I have. It really doesn't have the blind spots in it that my Kia did and this winter I ended up in a couple good snow storms that I didn't get stuck in and didn't even slide around. My Kia wasn't good in the snow and it had all wheel drive. I think it's comfortable for sure too. Thanks for the review. The biggest thing is I haul some PA equipment for DJing and a band that I play in and all my equipment fits, but barely. Still it's a win for me.

      They did a great job on snow performance I've never even come close to stuck in crunchy snow and haven't been stuck on ice either, though it slides all over. The tires I have are "mountain + snowflake icon" rated but not dedicated winter tires I'm sure it would be even better with real winter tread.

    Patriot has timeless design and its insanely good value people majorly sleep on it. The Renegade is an okay successor in technical' terms but clearly a Fiat not a Jeep.

    I love my 2014 although it’s a 2wd with the 6-speed auto. It does have the latitude trim and the sun and sound package but I did replace the mygig radio with an Alpine ILX-W650 which has AA/CarPlay.

    I have 2016 manual 5 speed. Not sure what else. Prices SUCK in 2022. I really think these cars look cool, and I ll eventually put larger tires on it, but I bought this vehicle for about $17k, 2016, 1 owner, 23k miles…very good condition inside and out. Nothing fancy inside, no power windows or anything. I like the vehicle , it is what it is. Mine is slow!

    Just bought a used 2015 Patriot 2X4 manual transmission with leather seats, black body with black leather interior. It's a very good Jeep for the price. Patriots are not known to be loaded with goodies or luxurious inside, and that's ok. Because I'm just looking for utility and usefulness.

    I have a 2014 with 54 k on it I Live in Ohio we can get some crazy snow I’ve never have had to put it in 4x4 to drive it on the road it will blow right through it I agree with all of your comments about the jeep but I do think you’re a little harsh on the look of the little guy lol it a lot better looking then the renegade.

    I personally dig the Patriots. Detailed quite a few of them when I worked at a Mopar/Chrysler dealership. I’ve always liked the look of them and they’re easy to navigate around and in. I find my 2016 2.4 auto sport to be quite nimble and quick. Definitely drive faster off the line than the local traffic. But I do notice the extra weight of people and cargo more so than I do in my 92 Ranger. Put a 400 pound cast iron bath tub in the bed once and barely noticed it was there haha.
    Will say it’s weird that I can drift a FWD primary suv without using the parking brake. Makes it fun though especially with the traction control turned off lol.
    And I agree with the seats. My rig is silver on the outside with a tan ceiling and mostly black interior. I ordered some higher end custom made tan vinyl seat covers. Total game changer. Car looks newer with them and the seats are more comfortable.

      They're a good appliance! I think more people would like cars like this if we weren't all so conditioned to the extremes of performance and then judge everything else as not good enough.
      If you're willing to let good enough be good enough, well these are pretty good. Good enough anyway 🤣

    I have a 2011 North with the CVT. It drives well and smooth. Handles bumpy roads comfortably and honestly I find it looks way better than the compass lol. In fact it's got a very unique look to it. Imo, the cloth seats are actually pretty nice and comfy and the cvt transmission is smooth af. Mines got the Boston speaker system with the subwoofer and drop down tailgate speakers, so that's pretty cool. It's larger than a car but not over sized like a pickup truck. Just right and good on gas. My only wish is that the gas tank was maybe just 10 or 15 liters bigger for the added range but oh well. It's a great vehicle.

      I have really been enjoying this 2015! It's been a great road tripper, we just took it up to Edmonton Canada through Banff and Jasper and it eats up miles, cuts up curvy roads way beyond its league. I still think cornering is one of the major strong points of this car considering it's still a 4x4 that was focused on being affordable and better-than-average off road.
      No reliability concerns to date, does everything I ask it to do. I'm really proactive on maintenance though - some might say I do recreational maintenance :) so I almost never suffer the reliability problems other people seem to find in whatever car they own.

    Hey, man, I really enjoyed this comprehensive and honest review. I have the 2017 Freedom II version and I can't say enough good things about it. Confident on the road in all conditions. I used to own a 2012 Escape and this vehicle out-performs it in every conceivable way. I'm another guy that disagrees with you about the looks. I don't like SUVs that look like mini-vans, or like they were designed to look like athletic shoes. I like a strong, square, Jeep-looking Jeep and the Patriot fits the bill. The Compass looks like you're heading out to take the kids to soccer practice. Hahah. Anyway, thanks for this video. Be well.

      Thanks! I've had this one a little over two years and within its limitations it still just keeps doing everything I said in the video, nice road tripper, nice dirt road explorer.. I think everyone who has trouble with these either got a neglected one or they got the wrong expectations to begin with. I'm not keeping mine "forever" - ultimately it's an appliance and there will come a day when it's not worth repairing - but that day is WAY in the future, probably 5 or 10 years. I've got a big truck and a pair of Mustangs for other kinds of driving :)

    Have 2015 latitude; had to change throttle housing(easy fix utube has videos), and yep, it feels clunky(slipping) with axle/CVT especially when accelarating quickly, but so far I love mine.😊. Handles snow and icy roads like a tank. Good honest review here.

      Good to hear yours has done well for you! No such thing as rust out West, I've seen photos of rusted out subframes... not a spot on mine. They don't salt the roads much out here.

    Looking into buying a Patriot , I like the old school boxy “XJ” look to it & the no frills interior - any suggestions as far as up keep so I don’t have any major issues with it?

      The easiest bit is stay on top of fluid maintenance! The CVT transmissions on the older ones and the Trail Rated ones need their fluid changed super often, I think every 30k miles. The 6 speed automatics really should have their fluid changed every 60k miles and you have to change it 2 or 3 times to fully change it (because you can't empty it all the way). If you get a 4wd they also have a PTU (little gearbox that sends power to the back wheels) and RDU (part of the rear axle) that both need their oil changed periodically. Not hard work, not expensive... just easy for people to forget!
      Apart from that just don't put off repairs, if you get a check engine light or it starts driving funny fix it as quick as you can - just like health problems the longer you put off fixing it the more costly the fix will be.

      With proper maintenance I'm sure a Liberty could last a long time! But a Patriot burns a lot less gas and is better for everyday driving around if you're not towing or going off road.

    Dude educated af. Couple questions. I’ve noticed on a full tank I’ve been getting less than 300 miles and two the back dome light is leaking and staining the liner. Any recommendations?

      For that back light, it's probably leaking in where the back window washer grommet goes through the body. That can be fixed with some silicone or RTV www.jeeppatriot.com/threads/i-fixed-my-rear-dome-light-leak.4720/
      The fuel tank is only 13.5 gallons so if you're getting 300 miles & put like 12+ gallons back in to fill it up it's about 22-24 miles per gallon, which is about what it's rated for. My 2015 2.4L/4x4/6AT is EPA rated 21 city 27 highway so being somewhere between those numbers - especially with all terrain tires - would seem normal to me. Does yours seem to run OK, shift OK etc?

      I have a 2015 Patriot Sport AWD model and the gas mileage is awful. A full tank will give me about 250 miles combined city/highway driving. I once got 310 miles on an all highway driving trip.
      I dont care though I love it and it looks better than any other compact SUV out there that all look like bubble space ships. Plus its great in the snow.

    in 2019 I bought a 2011 2.4 4wd cvt Latitude, so far I have had no problems. I am afraid that it will fail. every how many km or miles should the cvt be serviced? very good video! greetings from Chile

      Everything I have read about the CVT indicates if you service the fluid frequently & don't tow heavy or drive abusively it should easily see 200k miles (320k km) or more.
      I think if I had one I would service the fluid every 30k miles (50k km) - fluid is cheap compared to a new car.

    Had the 6spd. It was good. But the mamual 5spd is the way to go.

      When I was shopping the two manuals I found needed their transmission rebuilt, that was all the red flag I needed. In researching I found that apparently pre-2011 manuals are more reliable than later ones. Maybe some part supplier changed, maybe a personnel change.. hard to speculate.

    I’ve had mine for about 2 years zero issues going on 120k use it go to snowboarding never needed chains it does really well.

      They're good little appliances, I think most of the people who have trouble with them either had the wrong expectations or didn't do their part maintaining 'em!

      If it has either of the automatic transmissions, perform fluid service right away. They're not fragile but they are almost always neglected

    What size tires and rims do you have on your Patriot? They look bigger than the stock 215 65 R17 my 2016 Patriot has.

      The wheels are 15" from a 1995 Grand Cherokee and the tires are 235/75R15 . No lift, no rub. Corrected the speedometer using JSCAN software.

      Thanks! I've had this Jeep three years now and still feel the same way about it - a reliable appliance that can bring me anywhere I need to go in any weather and nothing can run away from it down hill.
      In those 3 years I have had to replace the driver side power window switch ($35 and about ten minutes) and the OEM radio died (weird screeching noise..) which was a good excuse to install the more modern one visible in this video. That's it, apart from normal maintenance.

    I have a 2014. Its a beast in the snow. I believe my transmission is going out though. :(

      They're great in snow! If your Patriot feels like it's got a little "hiccup" on moderate acceleration, upshift and cruise it might not be the transmission it might be the spark plugs! This engine seems to wear out plugs pretty fast so the change interval is recommended to be 32k miles and the most common symptom of worn plugs is a little lurching during acceleration that feels almost like a slipping or poorly shifting transmission.

      The radio/nav I got is a Jensen CAR70V - it's good for the money, not my favorite but high end nav/radios are $500+ and this one is less than half that. No complaints! It does android auto + carplay

      Only one visibility frustration - the roof line extends forward a little farther than most cars so if I pull forward too much at a stop light I need to duck a little to see the stop lights. I am 6'1" tall, my wife does not have that problem but she is 5'6" .
      All other visibility (sides, back, mirrors, etc) are all as good as any other car I've ever driven, or better. The side mirrors are of decent size and there is never any difficulty seeing motorcycles or changing lanes.

      They're 15x7" with 235/75-15 tires. They also required a set of aluminum rings to maintain hub-centricity

    Last of the old jeep look. , it drives like a jeep, acts like a jeep. My patty riot can get down the smallest trails that would pine stripe my other jeeps , short wheel base that can turn on a dime and maneuver very well. Its good for light to medium 4 wheeling, excellent in snow. My only complaint is no 6 cylinder. Don't trade your patty in because they will be a classic jeep soon as well as liberty and commander ✌🦆

      I've had mine since 2020 and it's the car I drive most.. especially in winter! It's been a good investment I think and it's a good appliance all it needs is responsible maintenance and an owner who's realistic about its capabilities and purpose.

      @@shoveI my patty riot is a 2017 high Altitude, I've had no problems, regular maintenance. I've been jeep cult since 1972 , they are all I've ever had . I currently have a 2021 GC trail Hawk and 2016 wrangler JKU also but I love my patty

      @@robertware665 No, the 235/75R15's fit with no modifications and no rubbing. Probably couldn't go any larger but it clears the pinch seam and clears everywhere else.
      I did use JSCAN to recalibrate the speedometer since the tires are slightly larger than stock.
