  • @bansheezs

    In case people want to know, the tires are brand new geolandar a/t. 4low + 4lock+ esp full off was used. I wish I had a spotter for this and maybe airing down the tires would have helped. I just couldn't keep the speed going up it. When I got to the highest point I tried to turn the wheel around to get it start going forward again with no luck. That hill was just super slippery with all the loose dirt. 2 of the tires would just keep spinning and the brake locks differential wouldn't fully stop them because there was still some partial traction on the slipping tires. It would just kind of pulse the brake locks.

      If you want to go offroad, get a Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ, or Wrangler, or basically any jeep made before 2006
      Much better.
      those little 4 cylinders in patriots can’t do shit, especially with a CVT. Also very unreliable.

      +Jordan Little With the 9 speed the Renegade would probably do a lot better than this Patriot did with its CVT. With the extra low ratio that the TrailHawk version has it would probably walk this hill, although it wouldn't make it look as easy as a Wrangler would.

      It's not the fault of the CVT. It's the fault of too tall gearing. Subarus and low end Jeeps don't have low range gearing like you get in a two speed transfer case. This puts the engine at a torque disadvantage.

Now he should have had the off road mode on to begin with, that's the FD2 Trail Rated Patriot . I have a 2015 FD1 Patriot with the new 6 speed auto and mine has climbed MUCH steeper "goat paths" than this with the OEM Affinity 'street tires" on it. There wasn't all those gnarly roots on my trail but that guy wasn't even up to the roots yet! He really made us Patriot drivers look like inept off-roaders. My '15 Patriot has a 6 speed auto. I really do think it's the cvt that's the issue. Jeep has been bolting the cvt and manual to the 2.0 whereas the 6 auto gets the 2.4. Looks like the tires are not working well in this terrain as well.

    • @sourwords1808
      @sourwords1808 8 лет назад

      Hey there.
      I assure you all Patriots untill now if automatic are CVT transmission.
      What you refer to as 6 speed automatic, is the ratios that are put in place which mimick the change of gears as you drive. In reality its a CVT and with 1 mechanical gear. Which is why it failed time and time again, because the CVT failed to build enough momentum to assist in that climb. Ofcourse besides the bad tire choice and a weak engine that isn't designed for such circumstances.

    Excuses, excuses, excuses! No, it's not that the engine is too small. No, it isn't that the gearing isn't low enough. The main two problems are a) The driver didn't have enough experience to pick the best line and b) He didn't know how to take advantage of what Jeep calls, "brake-lock differentials".
    As for "airing down", that would have made it easier on both the driver and the vehicle (and on the lady when she was in the vehicle). There are ways to deal with the problem of not having a compressor with you. 1) carry a tank full of compressed air. 2) Carry a tire pump (a 12-volt pump or a hand pump). Yes, a compressor would be faster than a tire pump but most people shouldn't even be off pavement if they are in a hurry. (You really shouldn't be off pavement any father than the parking lot at the local sweet corn stand without one of the above.) But even if you don't have a way to pump up the tires yourself before getting back on pavement, there are VERY few places in the U.S. where you can't plan your route so you can come out from driving off pavement somewhere near a filling station with an air hose.
    Now please, TFL, find someone with half the experience my wife has driving off pavement and who understands both physics and the Freedom Drive II system and make a video of someone going up that hill in a bone-stock vehicle with Freedom Drive II.

    The patriot and compass should have never wore the jeep name. Especially never should have had a trail rated badge. Completely backs up how little that emblem means. It can't even spin the tires enough to actually even get stuck. Was traction control on or can it even be defeated?

  • @Stuka87

    If the Patriot had the package with Freedom Drive II it would have made it. Its just not geared low enough. The CVT was a very unhappy camper.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 8 лет назад

      +Stuka87 I agree, if it had the low range gears and 6 speed auto instead of the CVT it would have made it, clearance was not an issue.

    • @MrMischief604
      @MrMischief604 8 лет назад

      +Stuka87 That is a FDII package. You can tell right at the beginning of the video. Only FDII had the Trail Rated badge.

    • @Stuka87
      @Stuka87 8 лет назад

      +David Auker Then he didn't put it in low. I have seen one with the FDII climb some very steep things and had plenty of torque. There are event videos of guys with them at Moab.

    • @MrMischief604
      @MrMischief604 8 лет назад

      +Stuka87 Moab has plenty of traction, this doesn't. I think that is the root cause here and with the Subaru cvt. It seems those things just sort of disengage the cvt when a wheel spins.

      +jmc6000 It might have enough power to overcome its lack of low range. The Patriots problem was he didn't have a low range and the CVT is terrible at getting power to the ground.

    Geesh, Roman didn't need to be so dramatic and go fast up the hill in the Wrangler or Bronco, both would have easily crawled up. Off roading isn't about speed.
    And I would have expected a little better from the Outback and Patriot, perhaps a driver mod would help...

    Maybe the trail rated version with a lift and proper tires could make it, but a run of the mill patriot with street tires doesn't have what it takes.

    • @NathanDAdlen
      @NathanDAdlen 8 лет назад +1

      +1guyin10 Agreed. Also, the 1st generation (this one) also had a CVT. The current version's transmission is much better.

    • @1guyin10
      @1guyin10 8 лет назад +1

      nathan adlen The 6 speed auto that they put in most of them now would do much better. Of course I bought the base FWD with the 5 speed manual, which is useless off road. On the other hand it was cheap, surprisingly comfortable and delivers 28+ mpg.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 8 лет назад +1

      +1guyin10 That patriot was a set of low range gears and a non-CVT transmission away from making it, even with the street tires. I am tempted to take my Cherokee Trailhawk up there, I suspect it will have no issue (low range, locker and proper tires and all)

    • @1guyin10
      @1guyin10 8 лет назад

      mrvwbug44 Bet it will make it. I've seen the Cherokee Trailhawk do some surprising stuff. For that matter we followed a Renegade Trailhawk around a while back and other than having squat for articulation it did rather well.

  • @TheWeakLink101
    @TheWeakLink101 8 лет назад +1

    The real problem is traction control. Even though you can turn it off its never fully "off". If you could disable the traction control fully i think the Subaru Outback and the Jeep Patriot could have done it.

    • @justinkingtut
      @justinkingtut 8 лет назад +1

    • @aronjohn84
      @aronjohn84 8 лет назад

      on my 08 liberty I can turn it all the way off. tells you how to do it in the manual. you hold the button for 5 secs. switches it off. I know even my liberty could have done it. I blame it on the street tires and operating error. but iv never owned a patriot

    • @bansheezs
      @bansheezs 8 лет назад

      +TheWeakLink101 you can't disable the brake lock differentials. I think even if there was a way to disable them, there would be no way to get those spinning tires sending their power to the wheels with traction.

    that's not a real Jeep... It's a Mitsubishi FWD platform with a Jeep badge on. Get a real 4x4 on there and it'll swallow that up and shit it out.
    That comment aside, the Patriot is a good vehicle for what it's built for. It's amazing in winter with good tires ("4x4" model)and it's practical. I owned both the Patriot and now the Wrangler, but the Wrangler would destroy this thing off-road. I miss the practicality though!

      +Paul Wicklund Should have zero issue. Most proper 4x4s with a low range could do that easily. Their early bronco did it with little trouble and was running street tires with open diffs at both ends.
