I played a set of Premier drums that were from 1971. They were NOT the Birch Shells, they were the 3-ply African Mahogany, with Beechwood glue Rings. They were my to go kit besides my early 1960's Gretsch. For a 2 years i had found a unique Premier snare drum that was an all brass shell with an inlay of Birch inside! Unique in that is was the 13" x 7" as opposed to the 14" x 9" Rock 9 Snare. I was stupid for getting rid of that 13" Premier Snare drum, but my good friend who played 20 years with Duke Robillard named Tommy Dequatro really wanted that drum, so i traded him for a 7 line Rogers Brass Dynasonic snare for it.
Stuff of dreams right there. I had two Premier kits. A black pearl finish and a white pearl finish. Both looked great. Never had a glitter though......👍😎🙏
This sparkle finish looks a lot like my first kit which was by Beverley around 1963, but I believe mine was Champagne Sparkle Gold? I loved listening to Charlie..... Thanks and Blessings!
I studied with Charli from 1976-1978, I played on that set many times at lessons & a few times when charli was rehearsing with frank fosters”loud minority”. all the drums were Were double headed at that time.
I have only good things to say about Premier drums from 40's to 80's. I've got a B303 outfit with resonator inserts! its not even a resonator. I've heard they sound better without them, yet to try that. These are no doubt a special order, 14" floor toms are hard to come by.
Premier never sponsored any drummer,by paying them to play their, stuff. Cliff Dellaporta had the Queens award to industry on his desk, it was for exporting tom toms to the Africans,he told me.
Yes, it is so nice to hear a fantastic drummer actually PLAY the musical instrument instead of beating it to death like so many of today's young drummers. Can you tell that I'm an old jazz drummer? These drums sound amazing! I've never had an opportunity to play them although many drummers have recommended them to me, if only for the hardware.
Great drums, it was a delight to work at the Premier Drum Company. Happy days.
You worked there? Wow! What years were you there please?
1970 to 1983
As soon as I heard this kit I knew straight away it was the signature Premier sound.
Worked alongside Stuart also. Had some engineering input into the 252 pedal. :-)
They had a formula of super thin shells, very thick reinforcement hoops, and die cast rims. Great drums!
Have a 12/14/20/14x4 sixties set love it ❤
Yeah. Recently acquired a 3 ply African Mahogany 13/16/22. Absolutely fantastic drums.
Charlie Persip is a swingin historic voice in music and drumming globally!
Wow, such a fat wide sound 🙌 awesome tuning and the room seems to reflect beautiful 🥁❤️ and of course, stunning playing by Mr.Maxwell ❤️
What a beautiful kit… and great playing!
Steve, great kit, sounds great. Always enjoy hearing you play! Thanks!
Great pickup Steve! Love that bass drum/size-, always great to listen to you Steve
Charlie was with you on that one.your playing is so expressive here . On fire .you and the drums sing.
Beautiful!

I’ve got a Premier B303 from the 70s..
Lovely drums..
Clem Burke and Kieth Moon's choice. Beautiful drums.
The smile says it all!
Charlie also played with the Mercer Ellington band on broadway for the run of the Duke Ellington show Sophisticated Ladies. Great drummer, nice guy
This is my fav era of Premier drums
Charlie was my ensemble teacher in college, many, many years ago…
Lovely - maybe a 1970s 111 or 202? Didn’t think they did 18” bass drums though so maybe was special order

I think Beverley were somehow related to Premier. They were also great drums.
well, I still 'gush' over my 1982 Gretsch USA walnut even with the power toms...Look at them, or some of them on the Pat Sajak video I posted...
Nice still have my 80's maple set

@0:48 Is it really an 8" X 12"? I thought all the Premier kits with slotted tension rods were metric: 11.5"
Or maybe this is actually 12"?
Nice Steve !have you been practicing? Lol great stuff

Great drumset. Are those toms pre international sizes? Ι have got a similar kit from the 60s, 3 ply sweet sounding drums
