Tito Jr., thanks so much for sharing this rare gem! As a son, musician and good human being, you're doing such great work to contribute to the world of Latin music while helping to preserve your father's mighty legacy. I picked up the timbales after first seeing your father play himself in "The Mambo Kings". I was fortunate to find the 14 & 15" vintage stainless steel Tito Puente model by LP as my first set! Talk about endless inspiration from the legend! Especially once I started exploring his catalog ("Top Percussion" album anyone?!). Many thanks again to you for being a keeper of the flame!
Tito Jr.--Thank you for posting this ! Great memory from my many years with your dad ! We gotta keep this alive ! Best wishes, Mitch Frohman/tenor sax (27 years old in this video).
Mr. Frohman, it's great to see you chime in sir. If I were blindfolded, I'd recognize that signature attack and tone within the first bar. Thanks for all you've done throughout the many decades to add so much depth and soul to the world of Latin and jazz music!
That swung like crazy . Felt amazing. What genius right off the floor . Thanks for posting this . I've never seen cascara bell patterns used on a break.what? So easy to miss . so great. Tito Master .
El Rey Del Timbal! 💥 Bummer that videos like this get limited views, while so many mindless videos get millions of views. This is a special piece of world history!
Because in the early days (the 1920s') of the formation of what eventually became the drum kit of today drummers used to use "contraptions" like wood blocks, cowbells, ratchet effect, whistles, etc. (sound effects) attached. That eventually got shortened to the word "Traps." So in the old days when a drummer was hired they frequently told drummers, "Don't forget to bring along the "traps." Thus the nickname for the drumset became "Traps." The great Buddy Rich, when he was a child star in vaudeville, was billed as "Traps The Drum Wonder."

I love the way he double timed the drum solo at the end playing the Latin beat 🎶 right around 6:14 that was sweet 🎶

Tito greatly admired Gene Krupa
Why is it called a "Trap" kit? I thought it was a joke and Tito was gonna play a trap beat😅
Me too
