Slingerland is my brand. My drum set is going on 40 years old from when it was bought new. I have been playing on this set of drums since I was 13 yrs old ans I am going on 53 this year. Slingerland has a special sound to me. I love that DW is bringing them back. Thank ya'll for putting out the information.
Great job as always guys! I have a set of the Nashville Era Slingerlands, love them! Very excited for the new stuff. Man, that Gold Duco is mint. The "Feedback" like at then end wrapped it up nicely...perfecto.
Outstanding! I've just seen Steve Maxwell's demo of the new drums, and am thrilled to see them doing it right. :) I'm 70, and have owned several Radio King snare drums, and one complete Radio King set. They were my favorite drums ever, so this is truly exciting!
I was a little worried about what DW might do with Slingerland when I learned they acquired the brand, but assumed an RK snare re-introduction was the first step. Glad to see they apparently knocked this out of the park. Interested to see how they proceed. Well done, DW/Slingerland! (And well done DCP for a great video!). Hoping for a great future!
The Radio King snare is back for a limited time only, and you need a boatload of cash to buy one. I wouldn't go as far as saying Slingerland is back. It's just dw seeing some dollar signs. If I had the cash I'd sooner buy a vintage one.
Great drumming! Great video! Got a set of jazz-sized Leedy-Slingerlands when I was 15. The Leedy snare throw-off didn't work with the Slingerland bottom rim, the screws for the "new and revolutionary" Set-o-Matic tom mount's screws stripped within minutes and it became evident as I owned and tried to tune them, that the "pipe" design tom mount also tended to kill the resonance of the mounted tom.. I eventually replaced the Set-o-Matic with an older double-tom mount with "clip-on ears" and added a 9x13 tom and then noticed a discernable difference in tone between my new tom, which didn't have a 7/8" hole in the shell to accommodate the tom mount "pipe" and the 8x12 tom that had the hole. Ludwig made much more serviceable, durable and adjustable tom mounts at the time. Buddy Rich was still a big name, but one thing that we all need to remember about Buddy Rich and his Slingerland association is that he was caught twice as a Slingerland-endorser with a Slingerland kit, but a non-Slingerland snare. The first time, he had apparently transferred Slingerland lugs onto a Rogers Dyna-Sonic to make it look similar to a Slingerland COB Sound King, but during a performance a sharp-eyed guy from Slingerland noticed the distinctive Dyna-Sonic snare frame below the resonant rim. The second time, Buddy was playing a Fibes fiberglass snare in the picture on an album cover. While it isn't unusual in the "more modern" era for a brand-endorser to use another company's snare (Yamaha-endorsers Steve Gadd and Larry Mullen come to mind with their Ludwig snares), during the 1960s and 1970s it was considered to be deceptive, disloyal, and even fraudulent for an endorser to mix brands. Gene Krupa in fact used a Radio King snare (I don't think that Buddy did, but I'm no expert on Buddy Rich) and, as Shane says, they are "legendary," but let's not get too romantic about Slingerland drums... even the Radio Kings. I've read The Slingerland Book by Rob Cook, know that the "Slingerland Banjo" company was actually won in a card game by H.H. "Bud" Slingerland and that "Bud" was a "businessman," not a musician. The Slingerland Banjo Co. reportedly morphed into Slingerland Drums after the Ludwig Drum Co. started making banjoes and neither "Bud" nor any of his progeny were ever drummers. I would also mention that George Way (who had worked for the original Leedy Drum Co., was already acknowledged as a "guru" of drum manufacturing and marketing and was hired by Slingerland to improve their products) did a survey and assessment of Slingerland back in their "golden age" of Gene Krupa and the results of his assessment were not very complimentary, as compared to the other drum manufacturers of the era. Ironically, in relationship to DW, George Way started his own drum company in the late 1950s - early 1960s which was reportedly "taken over" in a stockholders '"situation" by the president of Camco (a percussion equipment and accessories manufacturer) around 1961. George Way had already developed the now-iconic "turret lug design," and the George Way drum manufacturing equipment was subsequently used to manufacture Camco drums. As most of us are aware, in 1977 or so, Camco's products, naming rights, tooling, etc. were divided and purchased by Tama and DW (then an accessory company... as Camco had originally been). So George Way, who was employed by Slingerland, begets George Way Drums, begets Camco Drums, begets DW Drums, and bequeaths the now-iconic "turret lug" to Don Lombardi/John Good and now DW owns the rights to Slingerland. Kind of "goes around" in a big circle, doesn't it? Not sure how I feel about this DW "resurrection" of Slingerland as DW already controls Gretsch, owns Kaman percussion, and is "cheek to jowl" with Roland. Quite a "percussion market concentration." And btw... I currently own and fairly frequently play a 1960s-70s "Frankenstein" 5x14 Slingerland COB Sound King and also have a 1970s 6x14 SK, as well as a solid shell (Vaughncraft maple) 6x14. Unfortunately, the Vaughncraft has 45 degree edges, unlike the roundovers that a Radio King is supposed to have (did you mention the bearing edges in the video?).
Thanks for the video! Longtime Slingerland player and I have been wondering when this was going to happen. Hopefully full sets to follow and not too far in the future while i can still play!
Tony lookin dapper! South Park meme always makes me want to binge watch every episode, these drums are fire! If you get your hands on one of these you better lock it up in a vault
That's not going to happen. The 7X14" snare drum alone is priced at $1,999 and the 5X14" $1,899 Yet another DW rip-off in pricing. I never did, and never will buy a DW product.
Once again DCP does not disappoint. Excellent video and this is truly exciting news in the land of drums. Looking forward to seeing what Slingerland will offer in 2025. Lets go!! 💥
Slingerland are my favorite drums. I had a Buddy Rich kit back in the 70's. I still have several snare drums from back then and a piano black set that I'm putting together.
Fabulous overview of Slingerland's history. I always regretted not owning a Slingerland kit. If there was a company to bring Slingerland back in the best way possible it's DW. Very curious about how their drum sets will look. I hope it won't take too long before we see those.
Love the sound of the 14x5 with the calf head (higher tuning). I also love seeing the stick dents on that floor tom. Shows it's a well-loved drum. Thanks for another great video!
OMG how cool is that! Thought I was done with buying drums,(63) But I just have to get a new Slingerland kit when they come out!! And yes, Neil Peart was my all time drum hero and I just loved his Slingerland era sound! So there you go!
I have a gene chrome over brass snare. My favorite snare I’ve had. Glad you hear they are making a come back with DW instead of being lost to history. I always wanted a Nashville kit after seeing Matt Abts playing them at the Ryman
Still have my Slingerland 6-lug student snare in marine pearl from the 1960s, as well as the Slingerland catalog with Gene Krupa on the front. Wish I still had its big, square black case that I used to drag onto the school bus every day, lol.
"Stick Chopper" hoops. I haven't heard that term in years. I marched with Slingerland snare drums in the late 1960's. The band director was definitely a Slingerland guy. That vintage kick and floor sound far better than I expected. I'm not too wild about at long throw off, but the snares do sound great!
Anybody could have set out to build a high-end snare drum made from high-end materials and then slapped a Slingerland badge on it, but I'm so happy to see that DW has deliberately built these drums to capture the cool and unique look and sound that made Slingerland what it was. That's what will set these apart. It's not just another high-end snare drum. It's totally a Slingerland drum.
The solid single ply is the key, IMO. There are many great snare drums, but the true Radio King single-ply snare has a unique and very pleasing, mellow sound. Not for someone who wants a biting snare sound. Great they are going to make a few. I stopped in at Mars Music maybe 30 years ago and they had a RK reproduction back when Slingerland had been reborn at that time. Also single-ply with rings. $650.00 back then and that was at nearly the top of the market. Gave it a play and it sounded great. I didn't need it but have wanted one ever since.
Just got an email this morning announcing the return of the Radio King and here comes DCP with their customary excellent video essay. Great work, everyone! But two grand is a lot for me to spend on a snare...are the prices on these so high because they're limited? Will there be a more affordable option down the road? Thanks, again!
Very cool to see this. Radio King kits and I go waaay back and the only reason I stopped using them was when I became an endorser back during the Fred Gretsch era. They made me stop coz they weren’t making anything like the RK’s. Aaaand just to prove there’ll always be somebody bitching, I really prefer the sound of the clamshell-era snares. Alert the media. Thanks for the great vid, Shane.
A few years back, I bought a '76 Sound King (COB) made in Niles, Illinois. My favorite snare out of every snare I've played. It'll be cool to see the Slingerland name comeback
@8:01 CHROMEY!!! You know if they re-issued some "signature" sets like Chromey and the Blakrome kit that Neil played, those sets would sell like crazy. There's a bunch of us (older) Rush nerds out here with disposable income that would line up for those.
I was 16 years old and went to see Alanis Morissette live and this was before she really had break through. Anyways I saw a young Taylor Hawkins playing those Slingerlands like nothing I heard before and the sound of that snare made me fall in love with Slingerland.
i dislike that it's DW that will save slingerland. but i am so in for new slingy stuff. i will bankrupt my house to get ahold of what i'm calling a renaissance era kit. and it's all gonna start with a radio king :)
Fun video thanks. Might have been nice if you could have an A B comparison between the vintage drum you had at the beginning of the video with the 5” reissue drum. Then again I can just fast forward and rewind
Back in the 70's I had ludwig drums my friend had slingerland. He called me up frantic one night. He ripped the bottom snare head . No spares. He had to borrow my supraphonic. I drove the 10 miles as fast as I could. I gave him my snare and took his. I told him I'd fix it for him. I ended up keeping his radioking and he kept mine for about 4 months.
I too love the late 1970’s 5 ply Slingerlands. Part of what made those special was the glossy hot lacquer finish inside the shells. Curious if these have a lacquer finish inside or if it’s a polymer based satin finish.
Damn, great sounding drums...reminiscent of that marching band/military snare sound but, very pleasing and unique as well. I recently bought a N&C Solid Shell snare, had I known this were coming out, would've have waited, nothing wrong with N&C, just different. Hope that Calf Skin drumhead is available separately, would love to try it on the N&C. Thanks for all the hard work doing these videos and, btw, what ever happened to the Royal Drumble series ?
Terrific history of such an iconic drum company that started in my hometown Chicago. Also, as always great audio demonstration with a variety of tuning. Thanks to the corporation known as DW, one of these drums can be yours for the low low price of $1799. That’s my guess! For a snare drum?!?! Piss off DW
Very Cool. I thought I was imagining things like John JR Robinson talking about “ Slingerland is back. “ 😂 It’s finally here 🎊 🎉. Was this part of the DW deal, or Don’s separate baby?
I found the deal of a lifetime and bought a 1926ish Eugene gisler snare drum off of CL for $75.00. He’s the banjo maker that sold to slingerland. Complete nothing missing. Sold it on eBay the next day for $500.00
I really hope they call back Danny Seraphine of Chicago and currently with the California Transit Authority band to endorse them again! It's great to see Slingerland back on the scene, this time as part of the Roland-DW family 🥁
The pricing is ridiculous. I'll just play all my vintage RK snare drums and kits with 70 years or so of wood maturity. Leave it to DW to charge out the ass once again. The 7X14" is an $800-$900 drum at max.
I worked for Gretsch when Fred bought the company, 85-86……the Slingerland machines were under a tarp in a corner……not sure what happened to those original steam bending machines.
Dear DCP+Shane - awesome video once again, thankyou! Can you tell me the size of the vintage bass drum and floor tom - Im guessing 24x14 and 16x16? - they sound absolutely fantastic
I think it’s worth mentioning that The shells are made in the Craviotto factory! (Owned today by Steve Maxwell) I’ve wanted a vintage one for so long to go with my old Slingy kit! But I may jump on this!
Not sure what it is, but the old Radio King just sounds better than the new one. There’s a mid-range ring to it that the new one doesn’t have that’s very pleasing.
I thought something might be up with Slingerland when I saw Bruno Mars drummer with a kit! Had a 6.5"x14" Slinger COB Gene Krupa snare drum for years and regret letting it go in the mid 2000s.
I have a radio king snare from the 90s! It's the only high-end drum I own. I had been seeing it sitting on the shelf of this music store near where I worked back in the late 80s, early 90s. About a decade later, I happened to be in the vicinity of that store and noticed the same snare sitting on the shelf. On a whim, I asked how much it was, and they were selling it at a discount for about $200 converted from my country's currency (this was in the early 00s). Needless to say, I bought it the next day. It's a 6 x 14 in brown sunburst (like a Les Paul). It sounds fantastic! The only thing wrong with it is its snare wires used steel cables to attach to the throwoff, and it was displayed with the throwoff engaged so the cables dug a slight dent into the snare beds. I don't think I'm ever selling that thing. 😁
I have a slingerland wmp jazz kit made in Nashville that I got on eBay years ago, which I love and gigged with extensively. Now, hearing this news, I’m thinking about replacing my Ludwig classic maple rock kit with a new slingerland kit. I love the classic American brands. Great playing in these demonstrations, by the way!
I have waited for this since I sold my 1975 Slingerland's in 2004, massive regret ! I'm misty eyed. THANK YOU DW!
You’ll be even more misty eyed when you see DW’s ridiculously high price tag
Damn those vintage drums sound incredible. Great playing too.
Thank you and yes they do!
Great to hear the Professors Slingerland there!! Wow!! ❤
They sound great. What really caught my attention was that bass drum. I loved it
Great job as always guys! I have a set of the Nashville Era Slingerlands, love them! Very excited for the new stuff. Man, that Gold Duco is mint. The "Feedback" like at then end wrapped it up nicely...perfecto.

I was watching Steve’s video and crying at the same time!

Glad to see they apparently knocked this out of the park. Interested to see how they proceed. Well done, DW/Slingerland! (And well done DCP for a great video!). Hoping for a great future!
The price tag. Wow. However, these sound absolutely wonderful. You get what you pay for. Thanks for the video guys! Well done as always!
I'm so happy that Slingerland is back. I also kinda want to see Greyson Nekrutman with Slingerland lol. NOW THAT BASS DRUM THO
that'd actually be such a great pairing
The Radio King snare is back for a limited time only, and you need a boatload of cash to buy one. I wouldn't go as far as saying Slingerland is back. It's just dw seeing some dollar signs. If I had the cash I'd sooner buy a vintage one.

I'm glad DW brought them back, can't wait for the kits ,hope there in a price range that a lot of people can experience.
That's not going to happen. The 7X14" snare drum alone is priced at $1,999 and the 5X14" $1,899 Yet another DW rip-off in pricing. I never did, and never will buy a DW product.
Very nice snare drums. Gr8 video guys!
Thanks! We’re glad you enjoyed it.
Once again DCP does not disappoint. Excellent video and this is truly exciting news in the land of drums. Looking forward to seeing what Slingerland will offer in 2025. Lets go!! 💥
I will always remember my first slingerland kit 🤘🏻
Another rabbit hole of gear. Great. Just what I need.
Slingerland are my favorite drums. I had a Buddy Rich kit back in the 70's. I still have several snare drums from back then and a piano black set that I'm putting together.
Nicely done. Thankyou. Swing Swing Swing with Slingerland !!!

OMG how cool is that! Thought I was done with buying drums,(63) But I just have to get a new Slingerland kit when they come out!!
And yes, Neil Peart was my all time drum hero and I just loved his Slingerland era sound! So there you go!
🎉2nd drum set ever was a late 70s Slingerland concert Tom set. Phil Collin’s config. Awesome drums.
I have a gene chrome over brass snare. My favorite snare I’ve had. Glad you hear they are making a come back with DW instead of being lost to history. I always wanted a Nashville kit after seeing Matt Abts playing them at the Ryman
I cried today! Thank you Lombardi family!❤
Still have my Slingerland 6-lug student snare in marine pearl from the 1960s, as well as the Slingerland catalog with Gene Krupa on the front. Wish I still had its big, square black case that I used to drag onto the school bus every day, lol.

So awesome!! 🎉.

That vintage kick and floor sound far better than I expected. I'm not too wild about at long throw off, but the snares do sound great!
Back when marching snare drums sounded like they should. Not like the rat-a-tat crap they sound like these days.
Love the history plus inclusion of a vintage example 👌

I’ve been playing my 1965 Gene Krupa kit for almost 30 years. Nothing compares to me. Glad to hear the news.
My heart is melting! 🤪👍👍 What a kit!
Very excited to hear about this....
wow they finally did it
My first kit was a navy blue Slingerland 4-piece kit from the 60's that my grandma bought from a neighbor for like $200. Wish I still had it.
Maravilhoso,parabéns Drum Center.
Leave it to DW to resurrect a legendary brand like Slingerland. Sounds great! Pairing with the vintage kit was perfect!
Got to get me on of those radio king snare drum
Just got an email this morning announcing the return of the Radio King and here comes DCP with their customary excellent video essay. Great work, everyone! But two grand is a lot for me to spend on a snare...are the prices on these so high because they're limited? Will there be a more affordable option down the road? Thanks, again!
these drum brand history videos are great (:
DW did Slingerland a solid, love that 14 X 5 sound,
Very cool to see this.
Radio King kits and I go waaay back and the only reason I stopped using them was when I became an endorser back during the Fred Gretsch era. They made me stop coz they weren’t making anything like the RK’s.

Alert the media.
Thanks for the great vid, Shane.
Nigel Olsson's Slingerland drum sounds on those old 70's Elton John records is classic!
My first drumset was a sligerland in Black Diamond Pearl finish ! 36 years ago eh eh, so awesome they're Back!
A few years back, I bought a '76 Sound King (COB) made in Niles, Illinois. My favorite snare out of every snare I've played. It'll be cool to see the Slingerland name comeback
It makes me want to pull out my Slingerland kit from about 1959/60 Mine are not Radio King but they still sound great. Glad to see Slingerland back.
i wouldnt pay that much. that shit is insane. you can get a dunnett or a noble cooley for less than a grand. youd always be happy w one of those.
Jesus, 2 grand for these snares. You can get a vintage for a quarter of that.
@8:01 CHROMEY!!! You know if they re-issued some "signature" sets like Chromey and the Blakrome kit that Neil played, those sets would sell like crazy. There's a bunch of us (older) Rush nerds out here with disposable income that would line up for those.
Hope they offer drums with the Sound King lugs too in the future.
Very nice. ❤
I was 16 years old and went to see Alanis Morissette live and this was before she really had break through. Anyways I saw a young Taylor Hawkins playing those Slingerlands like nothing I heard before and the sound of that snare made me fall in love with Slingerland.
DCP reliability rating = 💯💯💯
Let Kelly Blue Book and Consumer Reports know!
@ HAHA!! 💯
i dislike that it's DW that will save slingerland. but i am so in for new slingy stuff. i will bankrupt my house to get ahold of what i'm calling a renaissance era kit. and it's all gonna start with a radio king :)

It’s finally here 🎊 🎉. Was this part of the DW deal, or Don’s separate baby?
These are the snares I've heard today.
9:30 shout out to the bug on the ride
I had to see if anyone else noticed.
I'll keep my Slingerland Sound King COB snare. These look sweet but not paying $2,000 for a snare.
❤❤❤
Amazing comeback.. Slingerland was my first and hopefuly last.. I beliece you have a set from my Uncle Ed's collection in your showroom,,?
I found the deal of a lifetime and bought a 1926ish Eugene gisler snare drum off of CL for $75.00. He’s the banjo maker that sold to slingerland. Complete nothing missing. Sold it on eBay the next day for $500.00
Rush wasn't the 5ply era, it was the 3ply era.
I really hope they call back Danny Seraphine of Chicago and currently with the California Transit Authority band to endorse them again! It's great to see Slingerland back on the scene, this time as part of the Roland-DW family 🥁
Where are the full drum sets??
rad!
The pricing is ridiculous. I'll just play all my vintage RK snare drums and kits with 70 years or so of wood maturity. Leave it to DW to charge out the ass once again. The 7X14" is an $800-$900 drum at max.
Consider it an accelerated ROI. 😂
I worked for Gretsch when Fred bought the company, 85-86……the Slingerland machines were under a tarp in a corner……not sure what happened to those original steam bending machines.
Re: 90's Slingerland: If I'm not wrong, Tre Cool from Green Day was an endorser as well.
The snare sound of all early Rush albums, is a Slingerland student model..
Dear DCP+Shane - awesome video once again, thankyou! Can you tell me the size of the vintage bass drum and floor tom - Im guessing 24x14 and 16x16? - they sound absolutely fantastic
26x14 and 16x16
I think it’s worth mentioning that The shells are made in the Craviotto factory! (Owned today by Steve Maxwell)
I’ve wanted a vintage one for so long to go with my old Slingy kit! But I may jump on this!
Are these available yet? I love the 14 by 5 snare with either drumhead!!Hands down- Amazing!❤
links in the video description, but they are going fast...
Who is making the shells? I'm looking forward to the debut of the kits.
Not sure what it is, but the old Radio King just sounds better than the new one. There’s a mid-range ring to it that the new one doesn’t have that’s very pleasing.
Oh my.
Hey Shane whoever edited ManOwaR into this clip...Get them a raise, or lunch at least. All men play on 10.
Great idea, sir.
@adamfrost3722 Atta boy!
Unless I’m mistaken, DW was purchased by Roland. So does that mean Slingerland is now also owned by Roland ?
Not many can afford 2k for one snare.
Yep. Only those who can, will. I'll save my money for cymbals, 'cause you can't tune those..
9:30, someone's checking out the ride cymbal
Weren't pearts slingys 3 ply maple poplar mahogany?
Artist Model Slingerland 14x5.5”
@roybeckerman9253 not the snare, the 2 kits
Prefer the 5" King with the REMO plastic heads tuned high
The new SLINGERLAND vs the new ROGERS DYNASONIC…?
👍
Probably one of the first snare drums that I prefer not mic'd.
9:22, cockroach on cymbal :)
Stink bug. Ain’t no roaches up here. Spreading rumors…
@@tinterlande Maybe it came from Turkey with that Istanbul ride :)
any buddy rich fan?
Way overpriced. Not dcp fault.. hope it comes with a tube of vaseline
just about sold out in 3 hours
I have a slingerland wmp jazz kit made in Nashville that I got on eBay years ago, which I love and gigged with extensively. Now, hearing this news, I’m thinking about replacing my Ludwig classic maple rock kit with a new slingerland kit. I love the classic American brands. Great playing in these demonstrations, by the way!
What part of "limited addition" do people not understand???
Tony needs to only dress like that from now on.
