    The Special Charity Performance
    April 14, 2023
Starring: Laird Mackintosh (The Phantom), Emilie Kouatchou (Christine Daaé), John Riddle (Raoul), Nehal Joshi (André), Craig Bennett (Firmin), Raquel Suarez Groen (Carlotta), Maree Johnson (Madame Giry), Carlton Moe (Piangi), Sara Etsy (Meg)
On April 14 - just a day before the true final performance of the original Broadway production of Phantom (we don't count the 16th as actual fans weren't able to attend, only privileged people and folks who won a poor handled and unfair lottery) the Broadway company held a special charity performance to give back to the Broadway community after the show had been running for 35 years.
All proceeds from the ticket sales to this performance, as well as proceeds from a special online charity auction, went to the following charity organizations: Broadway Bridges, The American Theatre Wing's Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative, The Prince Fellowship, and The Stephen Sondheim Foundation.
The evening also featured a special guest appearance by several former Christines, which included the original Christine Sarah Brightman, Sierra Boggess, and Ali Ewoldt. You can see their appearance in the video of the full post-performance speeches that is included in this upload.
Also of significance is that this was Laird Mackintosh's first performance back as The Phantom after having originally given his final performance on March 6. Due to Ben Crawford's vocal injury, the production had been going back and forth between Jeremy Stolle and Ted Keegan as The Phantom starting the week of April 3. However, Jeremy had stated he had given his definitive final performance in the role the night before this performance, and Ted Keegan turned down the offer to do the charity performance.
While Jeremy was still told to be put on 'standby' for the charity performance, the production had to search for someone to be an official sort of 'stand-in' for the remaining shows. Laird Mackintosh was the only recent Phantom understudy to have exited the production, so given that he had been in the production recently enough--plus having done a couple stints as principle fill-in, and his long history with the show in general--he made sense as the person to call.
He came in to see the show the night before, and then on the night of the 14th he made his return!
We were very lucky to have Laird Mackintosh be our closing Phantom, and he was absolutely incredible at both this performance and the real final show the following evening. If Ted Keegan wasn't going to be our final Phantom, which it seems he darn near was, I'm glad it was Laird.
Please enjoy the audio, and the video at the end! :)

Oh wow, my won auction Dressing Gown. This is fabulous, seeing it being held like that onstage. The whole show, and all the shows that week were just fabulous! I am MISSING this show SO MUCH. Still in withdrawals.

Wish I was there. Do you have any audio/footage of Ted Keegan's last performance as the Phantom? He's always been my fave.

first of all, thank you so much for this! secondly, this is slightly unrelated, but in your description you mention the "poorly handled and unfair" lottery done for the invite only performance on the 16th. i 100% agree with your statement that the 15th was the true final performance, but can you elaborate on the lottery? i didn't really follow it, so i don't know how it was conducted and i'm genuinely curious as to how and why it was allegedly poorly handled.
