True story: Knuckles Chaotix was not only meant to star Sonic, but it was meant to be on the Sega Saturn. Unfortunately it was gutted and rushed to completion on the 32X as the 32X needed a game. Sonic Crackers is the earliest prototype of when it was moved to the Genesis/32X. Sonic Crackers has incomplete hub worlds and has a rudimentary level select showing that there were going to be 7 Zones, meaning the game was also going to have a lot more meat on it's bones.
I hear it's because Sega of Japan feared that the 32X was going to flop, and thus, the Sonic game on said system would flop. So that's supposedly why it became a Knuckles game.
I think I had a rom of a Sonic the Hedgehog 4. It has the hub world music and it featured Sonic and Tails with tether rings. I know it existed because I tried so hard to finish the first level... Now I understand it was just incomplete xD Wish I could find it again
I hope SEGA rereleases this game at some point. Maybe they could get Christian Whitehead to port it like with 1, 2 & CD? Hell I wouldn't even mind an emulated rerelease on Steam and Consoles.

I really wish SEGA had just put this magnificent gem on the Saturn instead, reasons being Sonic would've had a major game on the Saturn, they would have been able to put even more amazing stuff in it due to the Saturn's technical superiority to the 32X, it wouldn't be so rare, costly, and be a pain to get all the stuff needed to play it, and it would've been more well known, due to the fact it wouldn't have been on a failed add on. But if Sega made this a main game with Sonic like they originally wanted to with Sonic Crackers, No ring tether or it’s for one Zone, Released on the Saturn and doing well, The future Sonic Games would probably look a lot different, The main Trio of Sonic, Tails, And Knuckles could have been a lot different and expanded to 6 or 7 characters instead of just 3 if what I mentioned was done.

Maybe try getting a genesis emulator, and then download the game so you can play it. I had a genesis emulator on my phone they're not that hard to get.

I have a 32X arriving tomorrow, so I'll be able to finally try this. Update: Played this with a friend. We put in the stage select code and played as Heavy and Bomb. It was really really fun.

Believe it or not this is one of my favorite games, but maybe thats because I had a brother who made a great team with me and joked around with me while playing. The music and levels are great and each boss has its own theme. A beautiful game. Vector, Charmy and Espio were cooler back then too.
This looks like an interesting game. Unfortunately, I've never played it, but neither have many other people because you need the flop that is Sega 32X to play it. Sega should have waited and released this a launch title for the Saturn.

The good news is that you can emulate the 32X via the Mega Drive ROM option in Kega Fusion. That’s how I played the game, plus it allows quick saves for special stages which is good because you need them.

Also they have a smart use of the backward springs, unlike in Sonic 3 where they are used as an obstacle and in Mania that sometimes kills me with blue spheres (thanks God that at least they are very easy to access in that game)

I know people claim that 32X games would be “too difficult to port”, but in a modern era where the Xbox One X exists and is said to be the most powerful console ever, it should be more than possible to port Knuckles’ Chaotix to other systems. I would KILL for a Knuckles’ Chaotix port for Nintendo Switch (physical copy only, not digital; my Switch doesn’t have internet).
All it takes for Chaotix to become 10 times more playable is one simple thing. Hold your partner with the B button, and release when you feel like it, or if you're forced to. That's it. You can even use them as a battering ram. Far from unplayable that way.

lord i remember seeing this game in a window of a mall in the 90s and they were also showing off the 3DO and its capability of playing "2 Stupid Dogs" cartoons on discs that were only CD level of storage IIRC. at the time i was like "who would want their videos on fragile plastic discs?" but i wanted to try that manic looking sonic-like game. at last i can see what i was missing. this game is really insane and lives up to its name.
As great as this game is, the gimmick of being daisy chained to a secondary A.I. character is just awful in execution. Especially when you can barely get them to move the way you want to
It's a shame SEGA doesn't want anything to do with this game. A port, remake or sequel would work really well on the switch. The two separate joycons wouldale for a pretty cool co_op game.
