  • This week, Matt caught up with friends Paul (57) & Michelle (53) Lacey, a married couple who took early retirement, sold up and headed off to pursue a new dream. And when we say sold up, we really mean sold up! The house, the cars, the appliances, all of it.
    Their plan? Head off in the motorhome and travel for at least 3 years.
    If you've ever had the same dream, these guys may just be the final piece of inspiration you need to do it. Learning as they go, this episode includes some great tips too. At the time of talking to Paul and Michelle, they are 2 months into the trip and having a whale of a time - feel fitter and healthier than ever before.
    Thank you to Paul and Michelle for letting Matt drag them away from the pool, bike trips, wine and great food for a chat. Listen in and be prepared to get inspired to pursue your dream of freedom!

    I'm 64, semi-retired and I have just made a plan to buy a motorhome, put my little cottage near the sea up as an AirBnB or holiday cottage, mainly in school holidays, at least initially, and go off exploring with my dog, while my house earns me money! I can still do my work when I am around, if I want to. My personal items will be put in storage, but I will still have a legal address and remain a homeowner. I'm so excited! I can't wait to get started!

      Yes, not everyone is in that position unfortunately. We do have many other episodes with people who travel in different ways so hopefully everyone can get out and enjoy a motorhome adventure in some form.

    Loved this. We wouldn't sell our house (the kids still live in it, they may kick off!😃) & would worry about rising house prices for when age forced us back into a house, but would like to travel for long periods. As a retired cop of similar age to Paul, this was an interesting & inspiring interview. Best wishes to Paul & Michelle on their travels & vanlife - keep kicking the a*se out of that pension!

    The key point here is the EU passport,people of many diverse working lives can afford to retire earlier than the state retirement age but the 90/180 rule is hard to navigate without a EU passport. All the best to everyone who does this though.👍

    • @joesoy9185
      @joesoy9185 Год назад

      It's not an EU thing, but Schengen. Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus are in the EU, but not in Schengen, so they could spend up to 90 days in each and still be covered by the GHIC card.

    • @joesoy9185
      @joesoy9185 Год назад +1

      However, their itinerary shows that they're not concerned about the 90 days. Do they have an Irish passport ?

    • @bepto4877
      @bepto4877 6 месяцев назад

      I pretty sure the Irish passport doesnt get you out of the 90/180 schengen rule as Ireland isnt a schengen coubtry. The only way to stay over the 90 is to apply for residency & give an address isnt it?

      Two public sector pensions we could only dream , just pay for while we pay in the same to a private pension that gets destroyed in fees and bad investments. I have 5 different pensions and all but one reduced in value this year .

    I would like to know about the legalities of driving licence and V5 when selling your home and then registering yourself and your vehicle without a legitimate address?
    I recently discovered that using a 'care-of' address or a PO box is no longer allowed.
    Any advice would be welcome.

    • @MotorhomeMatt
      @MotorhomeMatt  10 месяцев назад +1

      A legitimate address is required. My advice is register on the electoral roll at a family or friends address for purposes of banking, DVLA and so on. Keeping on the electoral roll will also maintain your credit rating as opposed to no fixed abode.

      Unfortunately it is my understanding that registering a vehicle or drivers licence at an address where you dont actually reside has been an offence. It used to be permitted but no longer. Also giving a false address to an insurance company could void that insurance.
      Reason im checking is i am thinking of selling my home and spending my retirement travelling but it seems i have to break the law to do it?

      Your vehicle must be road legal int he county of registration to be driven elsewhere

    Hello Matt great podcast for us Motorhomers, me and my wife have sold our flat in Kent and intend to live in our Bailey Adamo 75-4DL in semi/permanent retirement for the next 10yrs. We have a friends address she is happy for us to register to vote and bank with. Someone has commented on this blog that we could invalidate our vehicle Insurance (we have a multi-vehicle policy with LV) is this correct please ? Its obviously important to know prior to our travels mostly UK summers and France, Portugal and Spain our winters. Great show thanks 👍

    • @MotorhomeMatt
      @MotorhomeMatt  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching and your kind words. You might invalidate your insurance if you lived in the motorhome without a registered address or did so for longer than an insurance company were prepared to accept. Discuss it with them before setting out. They may have a time limit that they are happy with you in the motorhome. We may do a future piece on this as it’s not something many realise to consider.
