Rachel's (McAdams) tongue is so present in the movie it deserves to be credited as a separate character (:

Rachel Mcadams should definitely be an Oscar nominee...! Such a great performance!
Diabolique Andrian I hope so

"It's insane that you are here". Just like the trailer. OMG. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! Their struggle, their love. I CAN'T WAIT.
this movie is either gonna make me really mad or really sad.
really smad
Shen Shen fuck lmao
Shen Shen You've still never finished it? How long since you read it? That might be a cool way to see the movie adaptation for certain books, then go see if the book is better or very different.
Shen Shen Yeah, I have a friend that turned me onto the story. She said it was a very sad, yet still loved how the two love each other, within such an enclosed society, where the religion is such a dominant force. That sucks you found out by spoiler though. You don't have any desire to finish the book, at all? You may still enjoy the writing, and for me, that's what I love about any art, that it makes me feel so deeply.
lol I only watched it cuz my gay side told me too
Anyone else loved how profound Esti's husband's character development was? At first Fruma was my favorite character but then Dovid's questioning of the community's definition of freedom punched my heart
I loved that character. I wasn't expecting his maturity. It seems he was caught up in the religious culture that crushes people's personality. In the end his humanity spoke louder than the laws that educated him
A mi me gustó Weisz, su mirada nostálgica y triste demostrando su dolor y desarraigo me atrapó desde el primer minuto. Excelente actriz además de bellisima, hipnótica y cautivamente
Definitely one of my fave character arc. He is well written and the fact he chosed to give Esti her freedom is what made him loveable character.
Finally saw it at a local film festival last week. Twice. Brilliant movie. Absolutely stunning. It was fraught with tension and emotion and the director's choice for not using a score or background music for certain scenes really amped up the feeling of repression and struggle the characters were going through. I can't wait to watch it again when it comes out on DVD.
warriorbard the girls end up together ???
Let's just say that it has an ambiguous conclusion.
So i will assume the end of the movie is like the end of the book... esti gets pregnant and stays with the guy ...
i think i hate you.

This movie is just incredible. The cast is stunning. After watching this movie I can call Rachel McAdams not just extremely talented (that I had always known), but really one of the world’s greatest actresses of the 21st century. Huge thanks to the director, to both Rachels and to the whole team for this precious Wonder!❤❤❤
Carol and now this... my heart is just about to explode😍
@Carlos Miguel Ugalde just say you can't enjoy a movie w/o in-your-face one liners and cheesy jokes/tacky storylines and go
@Carlos Miguel Ugalde if u read the book, it makes much more sense. therese and carol was never explicitly or insanely acted in love, one was bcs of her personality and the other was bcs of age. The film potrayed well the subtlety the novel had. But ofc its fine if u think its a bad movie
@Carlos Miguel Ugalde ok but disobedience ending was they didnt end up together. it was pretty realistic to me. And if i had to choose, id still rate disobedience higher bcs their bravery to tackle on religion+lgbt issue and it turned out ok/not messy.
@Carlos Miguel Ugalde u criticise them with "dull bad acting" when in fact u havent watched it at all?

This is finally available on Netflix (U.S) and it’s absolutely mesmerizing. What a deep system of emotional roots woven so tightly through the foundation of this film that I often found the suspense to be palpable. My heart shook.
U mean how to cheat yeah very nice.
This was a sloppy movie... really sloppy and I laughed at both Rachael Weisz and Rachel McAdams... I was like, 'Okay this is the movie...' The other parts were to make the film credible.... If you really wanna analyze this film, it was about nature and urges being restricted due to being an outcast...but the nature is what is to be done in a community that is so strict when these natural desires are being suppressed -- nobody ever went into the origin of the mentality of Weisz's character and McAdam's character.

I just now watched this film, and I honestly loved it, I think it was genuinely good, and that it really shines a light on very legitimate issues/struggles that go on within - not just the orthodox Jewish community, but in many religious communities.
I read in the comments that the movie is quite different than the book, though. That, in the book, Estie essentially comes out to the synagogue, but chooses to repress the fact that she's gay and still stay married and live as a straight woman, because that's what aligns with her religion. And that is actually (unfortunately) a much more accurate representation of what often happens in highly religious/conservative communities like this.
I will never forget a conversation I had with my father years ago, because his answer and the way he said it was just so chilling to me. I was raised highly conservative/Christian (in an offshoot of pentecostal). I got out when I was around 17, but my parents continued to pressure me. Anyway, In one of the many conversations/arguments with my dad, I said that people are not turned gay, that they are literally born gay, and without hesitation he said "I know". I just stood there for a moment, then asked him "well if you know God creates people to be gay from birth, then why do you believe it to be a sin?", and again, without hesitation, he said (this is a summary, btw) "God creates murderers and pedophiles, too. Just as they have to resist their urges to sin - to murder, or to assault children - gay people have to resist their urges to sin, too. It's just their cross to bear". I was like "So... you absolutely believe that gay people are born gay. That God creates gay people. But you think that they ALL should just have to live loveless lives? 😳" and he was like "Yes" - dead serious.
This is legit the way a lot of religious people think. And unfortunately, the queer kids who have been indoctrinated in this sh*t from birth often grow up to be brainwashed into believing it themselves, and living lives full of inner torment. It's deeply sad, and as someone who has a lot of religious trauma too, it's also utterly infuriating. I am beyond tired of religion sinking it's claws into children and destroying them before they can even become adults. Smdh.
damn, but people aren't born murderers and pedophiles, that is so wrong to think like that
@@CraftFoxy yea, can't tell people like my dad shit tho. Smdh.
@@Hosanna66m I'm a muslim and i didn't really pay attention to the religious message cuz i'm not that smart enough to understand other religion but damn this movie made me cry so much, i really love it
@@Hosanna66m i dont think you even know what trauma is lol. Just come over to the middle east and you won't see trauma but horror.
There is no gay gene. And the same way you clump religious is the same way i clump all of you're perverted type.
@@CraftFoxy How do you know that they aren't born that way? I'm not saying you are right or wrong but there is no way of knowing for sure what the truth is in regards to who or what we are at conception or birth. We close our mind to so much if we believe in absolutes. I use to believe in God but no longer for a very long time. I believe in good and bad, right and wrong but there is always a possibility of a middle ground in everything.
So I just came back from the cinéma about a couple of hours ago, and all I can do is think about this gem of a film as a stroll through the hypnotic streets of Strasbourg as the reminiscence of this film fills the backdrop of my mind. This film has rendered my senses even keener and sensitive to the enticing beauty that surrounds me. This film is a work of art. This work of art accentuates art. I will refrain from watching this film for the three next years. This is the type of film that you see once... and then let simmer and age like a fine millésime wine... to savor... every... last drop.
OMG WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED!

Definitely one of the best well written movies I had watched. Love all the casts and their performances!
The director of this film, Sebastian Lelio, is also the director of A Fantastic Woman, the Chilean film nominated for an Oscar about a trans woman that looses her partner and has to face his family. I'm Chilean so I'm very aware of this movie, and I'm a fan of Lelio because A Fantastic Woman and Gloria (another film with a strong woman at the center) are remarkable films, I have no doubts that this movie will be incredible too.

finally a decent lesbian themed movie, we are waiting for this moment!!!!
You've never seen 'Carol' or 'Blue is the Warmest Color' ?
Decent themed? What part is decent? I mean she's kind of still cheating :( and I can tell it won't end well
Yeah what do you mean by a decent theme? It's like a lot of other Lesbian films. One of them is a cheat.
Chrissy Eh? I don't get why everyone is so hung up on the cheating. Yeah, cheating isn't cool, but they're only human, and people do fucked up things sometimes. Movies would be awfully bland if they only showed morally perfect characters.
x y I'm not hating on the story, I'm annoyed that people are celebrating it as romantic and a great love story, It doesn't matter the sexual orientation, cheating is not glamorous, people are too excited on the love interests being in love. Mistakes happen, cheating happens, but it isn't romantic and it isn't decent at least not to me.
for those interested, these are the most significant differences between the film and the book, in my opinion:
- In the book, Ronit didn't actualy run away from London. Her father sent her to study in NY when she was 17 because he thought she could be happier studying there. She used to return to London on vacations, but she stop going back after a while. For that reason, she didn't "disappeared", and talked to Dovid sometimes, though when her father died they didn't spoke for 6 years;
- Ronit didn't show up at Dovid's house unexpectedly. Actualy, Dovid invited her to come, not Esti;
- Ronit didn't left London because her father found out about her and Esti, and she was not exiled because of her sexuality. In fact, no one in London knew about their relationship, except for Dovid, who knew but didn't tell them. Esti confessed her desires to the Rav when she was a girl. Still, Ronit thinks her father didn't quit know that Esti and her used to make out;
- Dovid is Ronit's cousin, and lived in Manchester before he married. He went to london only on vacations to study wit the Rav. He and Ronit were close, though, and afterwards Esti joined the team, when they were still teenagers ;
- Ronit works as a financial analist in NY, not as a photographer;
- Esti was not very welcome in the community. Everyone thought she was weird and didn't like her very much, specially beacuse she was cold and silent. Her marriage with Dovid was not very great, considering that she treated him cold-heartly, but it seems he did love her;
- Ronit was dating a married man in the beginning of the book. She had seen other women in NY before, though;
- Ronit's mother died when she was 4, and she didn't have a sister who also died, as mentioned in the film;
- The whole film happens in seven days. In the book, Ronit stays in London for almost a month;
- Their personalities changes a lot, too. Ronit is angry, rispid. She hates ortodox jewish rules. She has clearly an issue missolved with her father and with her community. Esti is cold and distant. In the movie, they both are very deep and sensitive characters, both struggling with their own troubles, suffering in their own way. The manner they face their problems in the book is more superficial. Thats my opinion, anyway. Dovid, in contrast, is very sweet, insecure and sympathetic. He doesn't want to be the next Rav and tries to do everything is possible to avoid that;
- Ronit and Esti first kissed and did stuff when they were 13;
- The book's ending is very disappointing. Esti decides to stay in London with Dovid and live a married live, despite everything she had passed throught and despite all her feelings.
Thank you, @sofis2312
Ohhh so the ending of the film and the book is the same.
Thank you! I'll try to read the book. 😄
Omg thank you soo much. I was looking for an explanation for the ending cause the way the story was told in the film, it made no fu**ing sense to me, but now it does.
@@justanobody8709 Didn't Dovid end up giving Esti her freedom at the end. It didn't look like they were gonna try to live the married life.
@@SophiaPetrillo_ I think that freedom was for their unborn child. Esti wanted their child to have the freedom to choose wether or not it wants to be in the Jewish community.

Nicxs yeah. You could just tell.
The movie is not about Weisz's character and its not a story about forbidden love. Its about McAdams' character and her quest for personal freedom. The movie is tricky: it purposely distracts you from that and pushes Weisz to the front with McAdams always lingering in the drab background just like her clothes, always hiding who she is, what she wants. As we go on, "choice" and McAdams come to the spotlight. The viewer has a choice of which character to focus on. Subdued yet powerful. Brilliant.

Mmm yes. We need more story lines like this because they are real
*sophie agrees*
Wtf!? Are you fukin stupid? You only think it's real because you see it in movies! Jewish culture is very chilled, nobody cares what you do, there's no secret Jewish police. It's either you keep the Bible or you don't, nobody's stopping you! This whole story line is in essence fake, if that's what you think of religious Jews your messed up
Ralph _ people cheat all day long regardless of religion. It's nice to see it's between a woman and woman vs a woman and a man.
I know but this movie just bothers me because it puts judiasm in a very bad light, and btw cheating is much more rare in judisim, because it is considered one of the three worst sins, akin to mirder, but again nobody's gonna do anything to you if you cheat, you just sinned.
Ralph _ nothing happened to either of them in this trailer? Why are you jumping the gun?lol. Either way, if you're a jew, you should be the first to be able to admit that there is radicalism in Judaism just the same as any other religion. Dont get emotional over facts.
i'm gonna watch this and love it so bad. a cheers to all the Jewish lesbians out there!
