As a 15 year old on vacation with my parents, I was on an eastern airlines flight returning from Mexico City to New Orleans a couple of hours before the pan am crash. I remember it was stormy all that day and we were actually in an accident leaving New Orleans in my dad’s Cadillac.... rear ended in the storm. Heading to the Knoxville world’s fair. In a coincidence, 20 years later, moving from North Carolina to Mississippi, I fell in love with a girl who lived in Kenner as a 10 year old child just a couple of blocks from the crash when it happened. She saw things she wished she could unsee. Strange how our lives are intertwined
My dear friend was on that flight, we were to meet when she got back that night. Blessing to all who took another course that day, so many miss her still....
So sad. A 60 year old F/E meant that he was a Capt or FO, reached mandatory retirement age at the tims, and reverted to FE since their retirement age was 65. I was at the Army Maint Depot in Biloxi, MS on that day. Aviation improvents are always paid with blood money. Damn politicians. RIP.
As a resident from the area of the city it happened in. This was a Tragedy for so many people who lived near it and all families of the souls lost. May they rest in Peace.
We had just moved from Kenner in 1981 to Luling across the river. I was at home and heard a loud explosion. First I thought it might be an oil refinery since there were several along the river. Never forgot the souls on board and people on the ground killed.
I witnessed the direct aftermath of this crash as a child. My dad was a emergency responder with the Red Cross and he got called to help and I was with him and he went and my grandmother was to pick me up but I was young and scared and I got out of the car and went into the crash site. My mother never got over my dad doing that. I have been afraid to fly ever since
I’ve been watching airplane crash videos and it is definitely an eye opener. Buuuut~ Planes are so sophisticated now, and so are amusement park machines like the huge roller coasters. Problem is, mechanical parts can break at any time, however, I have a new-found respect for airplane mechanics, & the aviation industry as a whole. They KNOW not even to use a screw that isn’t approved by the company, etc. I believe we are safer flying, than in a car. The difference between a car crash and a plane crash is that so many perish at once. These beautiful souls that perished on Pan Am have saved millions of lives after this incident. I just wish they didn’t have to go that way…😭

I can understand your loss. My husband’s brother & sister in law were on this flight, too. Every year he would look for information pertaining to this crash. He was the one that identified their bodies. Also, he was supposed to be on that flight with them but couldn’t get off from work & was going to meet them later. His brother & wife had just adopted a baby 1 yr prior to their death’s. My husband passed away a few yrs ago so here I am remembering their lives & deaths for him. Sad, but remembering isn’t always a bad thing. Look at the good memories made. This video did give me chill’s watching it, though. The ending, they were flying up into heaven.
My dad was one of the helicopter pilots that showed up with the Army that day...he always said that the thing that messed him up the most was the fact that they were there to help people but there wasn't anyone to help. They had a memorial service today in Kenner and he was able to attend and I think he was finally able to get some closure.
Tell your father thank you for trying to help. My great great great grandmother died in this crash. She was on her way to visit her dying son, he was dying from cancer. Please tell your dad thank you because someone had to go in there & I am so grateful he did even though there were no people to help. There were still people who needed reunited with their families after death & I am forever grateful for whoever helped my grandma come back to Ohio & I’m grateful for all of the people who showed up to help!!

I agree with you. The lack of a procedure of advising the crew about the state of the weather was an important factor of the disaster. But, even if this procedure would have been used in New Orleans, the crash couldn’t have been avoided. According to the official report, the current ground based low level wind shear detection technology had limited capabilities (synopsis of the official report). I was in my second month as a flight attendant for a different airline when this happened. We had been on a layover in New Orleans and had just arrived from our hotel to replace an inbound crew when this accident occurred. One thing this video leaves out is how dark and black the sky was that day. I learned later, from one of the inbound crew that they actually witnessed the crash from the van taking them to the hotel and they had the driver immediately divert to the crash scene in order to see if they could help. They were the very first to arrive at the crash site. She told me that the fire was too intense to get anywhere near the aircraft and that one of the engines was still running and that there was nothing they could do. Regrouping, soaking wet, and leaving the crash site on foot, the arriving emergency services thought she and her other crew were survivors because they were dressed in their flight attendant uniforms. I was also told that one of our airline captains refused to take off into that dark cloud and that the Pan Am 727 took their take off slot. I will never forget this chilling event.
so i had moved to VERY CLOSE to this crash site about a few years after the crash happened. from what i know, i was only about 75% of a neighborhood road away from that plane crash. i can just imagine hearing that huge mechanic crash down and explode next to my house.. when i found out abt this crash i got into planes a lot. god, it was horrifying to even think you could die so easily from a plane crash
I'm a huge fan of May Day, and The Flight Channel episodes, however, despite the excellent re-creations on this channel, I was very disappointed that the French text covered the English text, so I missed the majority of information provided. In future, please separate the language texts so us non-bilingual viewers can get all the information. Thank you.
This was a very tragic plane crash. A lot of people killed because of weather and wind shear. Now, airports have weather equipment to detect wind shears.
I lived on Lynnette St. Just blocks from the crash. It was raining and streets were flooded. My sister and I were outside playing. I can remember hearing the sound of what I would swear was lightening striking something and I even told my sister.
Do you think that the controllers strike and new controllers not being as knowledgeable, had a part? I know it doesn't stop the fact of the wind shear being there at the time of takeoff.
I believe that in this case the low level wind shear detection technology, which had limited capabilities (synopsis of the official report), is more to blame. Air traffic controllers (including inexperienced ones) cannot be blamed for lacking accurate and timely weather data near the airport. Also, you are right, wind shear is currently a dangerous natural phenomenon that can lead to dire consequences (2011 United Nations Bombardier CRJ-100 crash). In general, a person who is carelessly confident in his superiority over nature will inevitably face death.
@@flywithpenguin thank you for your reply. i know it's an older video. I'm trying to watch them all, as I just discovered these aviation channels. you're right, man vs nature does not have a good record in man's favor. I think technology can only do so much too, especially if it is a sudden unpredicted thing. Can't rely on it 100%. And trained air traffic controllers, even if lacking experience, they cannot be to blame.
As always your videos are the the best and I have watched all of the other content creators videos. The dramatic music adds greatly to your reports. Again - the best.

Thanks a lot, Feefee Cat! Will do my best not to disappoint you. I don’t like to watch many identical videos on the same topic too. I used to work at that airport. My dad was a Kenner policeman and was called out to help secure the site. Here's one I've never seen recreated en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Air_Lines_Flight_304
I think your mixing up your wind shear incidents with that of an Eastern 727 that went down at JFK. Wendell Ladner died at the age of 26 in a June 24, 1975, crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 66. He was identified by medical examiners because he was wearing his ABA championship ring.
@@SSTitan1 But this was from a different airport, in similar Weather Conditions, and both the Air Traffic Controllers and the Pilots should have been made aware by then of the risk of Taking Off in such conditions! Amazingly, a four year old girl survived this crash!
I was a mutual aid first responder to 759 from a neighboring fire department, and I'm not sure I appreciate this type of sensationalism, not as public "entertainment". When I saw what this was I didn't watch it... Don't know why it was in my feed. 39 years ago this month. I wish some of you would have been less enthusiastic with your comments. The baby who was rescued from her crushed home Is still alive. Families of those who were lost may find this (I pray they don't). It missed a nursery school by a very narrow margin. Just saying...
One thing i noticed there was a Southwest Airlines 737 at one of the gates and it is in the livery of Southwest now, not when the crash occured. Southwest changes to the blue livery 1 Jan 2001
You are right about the liveries. I didn’t pay enough attention to the setting of the disaster. Unprofessionally for my part. In general, I try to pay as much attention as possible to the aircraft that participated in the incident. So I try to make sure that its tail number and livery correspond to valid ones. I pay less attention to the setting, coz it’s not the object of the story. Therefore, sometimes I get frustrated with the approach of other reenactment creators. Because some of them do not even bother to bring the tail number and the livery in line with the real ones pretty often.
@@flywithpenguin idk man, i love the flight channels videos which is why your videos are suggested to me probably. and coming from someone who knows not of a single thing of flying, yet has seen every single of of flight channels and a bunch of other ones like his, honestly, people like me dont care. its cool just seeing the aircraft looked like figuratively, dont care about the paint jobs. Its cool seeing the way the aircraft crashed though, like in this video, i wished the flight channel did it like this for every crash, instead of just the cock pit view. everything else doesnt matter to people like me who dont know about each planes histories of paint jobs
When computerised animation is used from several perspectives it would be more realistic when you see the other plane models in colours of that time periode. A Southwest and Japanese ANA 737 in nowadays livery is NOT realistic to show. Japanese ANA is not flying to New Orleans at all; maybe their freight derivate NCA Cargo can be seen on a charter flight..........
Thank you for your opinion! These planes and their liveries were automatically generated by the World Traffic application for this simulator. (In my opinion, this is the best application available). Unfortunately, I could not find anywhere on the Internet an add-on for the simulator, containing retro aircraft with retro liveries and their binding to specific airports. In addition, if I would pay such attention to details - painted liveries myself and modeled old airplanes - this channel would be more about 3D modeling, not about aviation incidents. Of course, I could have made the airport empty, but I think that would also look strange. In any case, if you have information about such application, then be sure to let me know. I will try to use it.

Also, according to the report, this technology was using at the airport since August 1979 (page 16 of the official report). This is almost three years before the incident.
@@flywithpenguin Controllers strike attributed to this also in that newbies were pushed through to qualify while there were 11,500 experienced Controllers on the street..

Just discovered your channel ..subbed and thumbs up 👍
Thank you! You are very welcome! 🙂
My brother Daniel was on that flight, he was only 27 years old, I miss and love him so much. His birthday is on New Years Day
Great job on all the videos, you definitely need to do more, you have a great future in this.
Thanks a lot, Harvey! I will try very hard!
My uncle was on this plane when it crashed. He was 17.
So sorry to hear that, Tyneka.😪
My husband’s brother & sister in law were also on that plane. They had just adopted a baby 1 yr before their deaths.
@@southernpeanut4028 I'm so sorry for your loss. I cannot count how many times I think of that tragedy over these past years. We live in Lafayette and when we have gone to NOLA, we pass the airport and I think about the crash. I didn't know anyone on that plane, but I felt and still feel a lot of grief over what happened.
@@mawmawvee Thank you. My husbands family lived in Hammond & his parent remembered that day until their deaths. My husband helped identify his brothers body. Every July 9th he would become so quiet & ask me to look up information about the crash. This is the 1st time reading the comment selection.
My roommate and dear friend was on that flight. I am still thinking of her and what happened, was the jet demolished or whole at all?
@@dthom4719 The aircraft was obliterated. The crash site photos are readily available online. Search for "Air New Zealand flight 901 photos."

I was called to go and find my roommates dental records. I still couldn't believe it. I called them right away when I found the information
Did you work for Delta?
Dam shame those people had to die before the Government got their collective heads outta their arses to get that done.
Fun Fact:the date was:May 12 1991.
so i had moved to VERY CLOSE to this crash site about a few years after the crash happened. from what i know, i was only about 75% of a neighborhood road away from that plane crash. i can just imagine hearing that huge mechanic crash down and explode next to my house.. when i found out abt this crash i got into planes a lot. god, it was horrifying to even think you could die so easily from a plane crash
I guess there was no turning around....

I LOVED THIS VIDEO!
I lived on Lynnette St. Just blocks from the crash. It was raining and streets were flooded. My sister and I were outside playing. I can remember hearing the sound of what I would swear was lightening striking something and I even told my sister.
Oh Lord! It's scary to imagine!
And trained air traffic controllers, even if lacking experience, they cannot be to blame.
the 727 featured a poor climb rate perfomance,a 757 would have overcome this situation
It may be. Unfortunately, at that time he had not yet operated commercial flights🥺
As always your videos are the the best and I have watched all of the other content creators videos. The dramatic music adds greatly to your reports. Again - the best.
Thank you! I blush to the top of my ears! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'll try not to disappoint you in the future!
Buen canal, buen video pero la traduccion al espanol es DESASTROSA! Mejor no lo deberian de traducir! Great channel, great video but the translation into Spanish is HORRIBLE!!
I used auto-translation from English to other languages. Apparently this feature is not as good as I expected. Let me apologize to you.
Fast becoming one of my favourite channels - do more lesser known ones - don’t fall into the same old accidents everyone covers. Your vids are great 👍🏼
Thanks a lot, Feefee Cat! Will do my best not to disappoint you. I don’t like to watch many identical videos on the same topic too. In fact, I already have some list of incidents that were not described by anyone (or were described, but not well enough in my opinion). Looking forward to your further feedback!
The French overlays make it impossible to read the bottom line of text. Such a sad tragedy.
Hello! Try to turn subtitles off.
It’s a tragic accident 😱
I used to work at that airport. My dad was a Kenner policeman and was called out to help secure the site.

I believe an NBA player was on that flight. I don't recall his name. Terrible accident!
Wasn't an NBA player on the 1986 Detroit crash too??
@@garyj79 Yes, the August 16, 1987 crash of Northwest 255 in Detroit took the life of Phoenix Suns player Nick Vanos ... 😥
Very well done !
Yeah. And some Canadair Regional Jets, too, which didn't exist until the 1990's! I enjoyed those anachronisms.
I live in Metairie. 3 mins away from this area. This affected ALL of the New Orleans area and the entire state of Louisiana. May the souls of the faithfully departed Rest In Peace. And God bless our little Angel baby that survived. She is more than a survivor. She’s an Angel of God. ❤️🙏
