  • You'd think an armed military vehicle could easily bully a civilian ship, but apparently it's not so easy...
"In a statement released by Venezuela on 31 March, RCGS Resolute was accused of committing an act of "aggression and piracy" by intentionally ramming and sinking Naiguatá while the patrol boat was conducting a maritime traffic control operation, as well as of acting "cowardly and criminal" for not participating in the search and rescue of the patrol boat's crew of 44, all of which were rescued by other Venezuelan vessels. An illustration of the incident released by the Venezuelan Navy describes RCGS Resolute turning hard starboard to ram Naiguatá while the patrol boat was sailing alongside the cruise ship. Video footage later released by the Venezuelan Navy first show a Naiguatá crewman firing warning shots with an AK-47 assault rifle, followed by the patrol boat taking water after colliding with the RCGS Resolute's visibly damaged bow. In addition, Venezuela has also alleged that Portuguese-flagged RCGS Resolute was carrying mercenaries for attacking the country's military bases and that the ship's inflatable Zodiac boats were intended to transport them to shore.
According to a statement released on 1 April by Columbia Cruise Services, the company responsible for technical management of RCGS Resolute, the cruise ship was approached by Naiguatá in international waters, about 13 nautical miles (24 km; 15 mi) from La Tortuga Island, Venezuela, shortly after midnight. RCGS Resolute, which had left Buenos Aires on 5 March, had been adrift in the open sea for a day while carrying out routine maintenance on the starboard main engine before reaching her next destination, Willemstad in Curaçao. After having questioned her intentions over radio, the Venezuelan Coast Guard vessel ordered RCGS Resolute to follow her to Puerto Moreno on the eastern side of Margarita Island. While the master was in contact with the company's head office and designated person ashore (DPA), warning shots were fired from Naiguatá and, shortly afterwards, the Venezuelan patrol boat purposely rammed the cruise ship's starboard bow. During an apparent attempt to change the heading of RCGS Resolute towards Venezuelan territorial waters, Naiguatá came in contact with the cruise ship's ice-strengthened bulbous bow, started to take water, and eventually sank. RCGS Resolute, which had a crew of 32 onboard but was not carrying passengers, survived the encounter with superficial damage and remained on site for over an hour to provide assistance until being allowed to continue towards Willemstad by Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Curaçao."

Unless they are pirates, like legitimately pirates and not just a socialist government, all vessels over a certain tonnage have a legal responsibility to rescue floaters. However since it was an unarmed vessel full of civilians, it couldn't gaurantee the ability maintain security of force (the ability to maintain authority of individuals by force of power) and couldn't guarantee safety of civilians, which takes priority at sea over protection POWs.
Wierdly enough the "I have Civilians abroad" card is a legitimate reason to leave enemy sailors in the water and is one of the reasons most navies have civilian contractors abroad in non combat roles because holy shit is it hard to keep prisoners on a vessel.
I think most air craft carriers can only reasonably keep like 50 POWs without support outside of normal fleet operations

It’s a wonder the Venezuelan Navy didn’t try to accuse them of piracy. I’ve had a few run-in’s with Venezuelan navy vessels in past years (I used to captain a 95 foot yacht in a charter business, and sailed those waters frequently.) Their navy is a joke, but a dangerous and scary one. Once, they even tried to board us, well into international waters, but I managed to outrun them in the direction of a U.S. Navy ship. I had a U.S. home port/registration and flew a U.S. flag, so I knew if I could get within 25 nautical miles of a U.S. Navy ship, they wouldn’t dare touch us. Scary stuff!

Honestly it seems like that Venezuelan navy ship was crewed my cadets fresh out of basic. Firing on an unarmed civilian vessel unprovoked is very unprofessional. However thats just the tip of the iceberg, the real thing that made my jaw drop is, if we take the Venezuelan navy's word for it that they tried to sail in front of the cruise ship, then that is just peak stupidity. There are plenty of golden rules when it comes to operating ships, one of them is never suddenly turn in front of another vessel unless its anchored and in place or you have plenty of room to avoid a collusion. Ships aren't like cars, they don't stop on a dime, if you pull in front of another ship, even if its crew reacts instantly, goes full revers, tried to alter their own vessels course to avoid yours and even drops anchor in a desperate bid to slow down as fast as possible, the process still takes time and in the mean time physics continue to do their thing and that ship will keep moving. So it really dumb that the Venezuelan Navy ship though sailing in front of another ship without warning at such close range was actually a smart idea.

This is an embarrassment to the Venezuelan CG's training if what Resolute was saying is correct, which it probably was because remember, the power was cut and it was undergoing maintenance with iirc only one engine running to help it adjust its bearing and keep the lights going. No way in hell a bulky cruise ship with a heavily armored (and thus very heavy) bow is gonna pull up on a lightly armored patrol ship like that, not unless Ken Fucking Block was the captain and the engine bay was hiding a bottle of nitrous oxide and half a million dollars of Hoonigan merch.

The Portuguese accident report stated that neither vessel was responsible for deliberately ramming the other, but raised the possibility that the Naiguata's excessively close approach created a suction effect that drew the cutter into the Resolute's bow. Basically paranoia plus incompetence led to the unintentional self-sinking of a relatively new patrol boat.

I would love to see you cover the Dogger Incident which took place during the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. In the leadup to the Battle of Tsushima, a Russian fleet was sailing past Britain, headed to Japan to confront the Japanese. The Russians had heard fictitious reports of Japanese torpedo boats operating in the area and were on high alert. In the Dogger Bank incident, the Russian fleet mistook a group of British fishing trawlers operating near the Dogger Bank at night for hostile Japanese ships. The fleet fired upon the small civilian vessels, killing several British fishermen; one trawler was sunk while another six were damaged. In confusion, the Russians even fired upon two of their own vessels, killing some of their own men. The subsequent Battle of Tsushima saw the Imperial Japanese Navy humiliate the Russians in one of the most decisive battles in naval history.

Qxir baby, you are just getting better and better! All of the highlights already mentioned in the comments were superb, but for me the quip on " Patronizing me" was absolute GOLD, as was the " we can enjoy some Bruskis on the blue seas with some floozies on the cruisies". Just brilliant! Can't wait to pop the cork when you hit 1M subs xxx

I just found your channel a couple months ago and I must say this is one of my favorite youtube series of all time. Maybe it’s something about your narration, cute drawings, or humor. Probably a combination of the three. Anyways, thank you for the awesome content.

This has roughly the same energy as a trained military personnel losing in a fight with an overweight teenager that has a habit of swindling people out of their money by tripping on his foot and faceplanting into the ground.
