I took a school trip to DC in 06 when i was a teen and our schedule got messed up so we ended up going to look at the white house around 8pm. We were all dressed up and very bored so i decided id jump up and down by the fence, feigning an attempt at climbing. I noticed shapes moving on the roof of the white house and there were rumors snipers were posted there nightly so i assumed that was them. I waved and shouted, pointing them out directly. My classmates moved away from me. I kept yelling that i could see the men and gave one the finger. To my delight he returned the gesture, slightly backlit by floodlamps on the rear lawn. The other shapes on the roof wiggled again and i presume they were laughing at us both as i figured they were already aiming at me, hence the prior movements. Best school trip ever.

There hadn't been any precedent of people flying bombs into U.S. government buildings at that point. So their reaction kind of makes sense. In addition he really got off light all things considered, but I think it's more of a credit to his lawyers than anything for successfully arguing that he had a disturbed mental state, didn't mean to or in the end hurt anyone, and had genuine contrition. The fact that he wasn't dishonorably discharged though is a shocker!
