Bank Robber Dresses as Santa, Has Terrible Experience | Tales From the Bottle

- This bank robber thought disguising himself as Santa would be a smart idea, and maybe it was, but it didn't stop the heist from becoming spectacularly catastrophic.
"The Santa Claus Bank Robbery occurred on December 23, 1927, in the Central Texas town of Cisco. Marshall Ratliff, dressed as Santa Claus, along with Henry Helms and Robert Hill, all ex-cons, and Louis Davis, a relative of Helms, held up the First National Bank in Cisco. The robbery is one of Texas' most infamous crimes, having invoked the largest manhunt ever seen in the state. Boyce House, editor of the Ranger Times, a newspaper in the county at the time, wrote that this was "the most spectacular crime in the history of the Southwest ... surpassing any in which Billy the Kid or the James boys had ever figured.""

robbing a bank thats ONE block away from the police station AND IN AN AREA WHERE PEOPLE ARE GETTING MONEY FOR KILLING ROBBERS is crazy
in Texas
Texas.
In one of the most gun happy states in the most armed country on earth. Real geniuses these guys were.
Depression era, people did some desperate things. Also this was the days when the FBI was just getting started so a lot of times if you just got over state lines it was harder to arrest and charge you.
happened a few years ago in my small town the guys plan was to run across town and jump into the great miami river and swim across to escape. the problem was he was a terrible swimmer and by the time he got across the cops had already drove to the other side and were waiting
This story needs to be made into a movie. It'd be the craziest Christmas film of all time.

Good old Texas
Back when Texas was based
Since I live in Cisco Texas. There is one thing you don’t want to do, and that is piss people off. They will come after you here and get justice. Most people here are peaceful and easy going. Nice little lake to fish in and a lot of antique shops. Great place to go hunting too. Plus a beer brewery called “Red Gap.” Good beer if you ever find some you should try it.
We used to be a proper nation!
@@UnwaryThunder9 Yeah, properly insane.... No wait, you still are. Could you keep the murder and vigilantism inside your own borders from now on, please?

Thank you for doing a small documentary on this quite little town. Cisco was also one of Bonnie and Clyde’s hideouts.

Wow, props to Meiriam Ferguson, pardoning a bank robber that went right back to robbing banks. The more you know. 😂
Lady was probably a 21st century Democrat time travelled back to the past.
@hrr597 Apparently it's suspected that bribery was involved in a lot of the pardons that were granted.
@@hrr597she was as crooked as the River Raisin (very much bent) and indeed a (D) whose husband Jim was impeached. She was basically an openly puppet figurehead, after her husband was convicted on 10 charges and barred from public office ever again. The infamous idiots, Bonnie and Clyde were finally brought down by two former Rangers, Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, and Ma tried to take credit for organizing the entire thing. She was a right evil bitch.
I wonder if she did this to satiate some desire of hers to see what these criminals would do if given another chance like a social experiment.
Instead of pardon, now we just set bail to 0. Not even a need to hold them overnight
This was absolutely insane from beginning to end with so many coincidences, close calls and sheer incompetence. That Santa parade was the full circle being completed.
“This is a ho-ho-hold up” is genuinely a line that needs to be in a tv show
I don't care what anybody says, this is the Greatest American Christmas Story of All Time.
Watching this video ought to be a treasured Christmas event, at least a full Hollywood feature is released.
@10:04 I think in Texas it's less of a pardon and more a "catch and release" type deal. They're just restocking the pond.
This is nuts. So I use First National Bank for my business payroll and the branch near my shop was in fact robbed in December back in 2019, but he wasnt dressed up like Santa. Instead, he did his best impression of a character from Trainspotting because the cops found him nodding off at a bus stop the next day a few townships over. He was wearing the same clothes... because of course he was. Its a crazy story. If i can find the link ill post it.

PS to clarify on one point, having 6 revolvers on ones person is not considered out of the ordinary here
For Texans they sure seem quite interested in reloading New York.
this was also in a time when reloading a revolver wasn't so simple
I just want to say, I appreciate that you always have subtitles on your videos. Hardly any RUclipsrs add them anymore including higher-effort ones.
Does make me wish Community Contributions were back, I really don't get why they got rid of it.
Because it's YT, and YT sucks... But yeah, very few youtubers bother and the ones who do should be commended. Even people with good hearing need them sometimes, like if we're in a loud place, for example.
@@WatanabeNoTsuna.I disagree that you can fully blame youtube. They did implement community sourced way. But it was often manipulated and unprofessional. Ofc youtube could have handled it better. But it's not just a "they suck lmao" to me. Tom Scott made a good argument that a content creator has some moral obligation to put in the effort to make subtitles. And the obligation only grows with the size of your channel. Considering you can pay people to transcribe your content.
@@jeltje50 Well I never recall seeing terrible subtitles, but even then they had to be approved by the creator before they could be shown last time I checked.
True that, probably doesn't make a lot of difference for many people but it's something I love to see
@@jeltje50 95% of subtitles were fun and games. Were there bad eggs? I'm sure, but that's a given everywhere. Is it right to take away all the community because of a few bad folks? Nothing is perfect, not even youtube right now, there's still content on this platform that should probably be banned and is a lot worse than some silly subtitles. And as another user mentioned, subtitles had to be approved by the creator, who could have helpers go through that as well. It can even be further filtered by youtube preventing a lot of shenanigans using many available methods.
Nice video. I'm from around that area. One of the telephone poles they hung him from is still there and there is a plaque in front of it telling the history.

I live in Cisco lol. There is a painting on the side of a building and on that painting is Santa with a little stockman pistol and a sack of cash. Right square in the center of the painting. "This is a Ho-Ho-Hold up" said dead seriously, absolutely killed me 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
The levels of incompetence among these thieves is actually astounding. I guess it’s not a line of work you get into if you have a lot of useful life skills though.
The thieves were incompetent, but it seems like everyone was kinda stupid back then. The mob opening fire through civilians, the man hunters shooting themselves, the farmer shooting at a car with his son in it, the prison guards letting the cell door open, and the people breaking into prison and lynching a man.
Oh and the department pardoning everyone

Disguising oneself as Santa and attracting massive amounts of attention from America’s most Santa-loving generation had me in stitches. The guy actually got into character.
This was the weird ending. The story would have been less weird if they actually went on the magic sleigh with magic reindeer. At least then it was self-explanatory that they did shrooms.

It's like _It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World_ except everyone was racing to kill someone...

Durango Colorado 1973ish. My dad's boss Randy's construction biz is wiped out by the IRS. He forgot to pay taxes. Sad, mad, and drunk, Randy phone's in a bomb threat to the local Bank. "Put alot of money in the trash can in the park or ill blow up the Bank !" The Bank ACTUALLY puts ALOT of money in the trash can. The police went to the park to nab him getting the money. They went to the wrong park. Randy walks the the two blocks from the El Rancho Bar (where he'd called from) and gets his money. Back the Rancho, puts his sack on a stool and buys a round for the house. The bartender, tipped off by thousands of dollars in a paper sack, uses the same pay phone to call the police. Randy goes to prison. Years later he gets out and robs a supermarket payroll or something like that. The Lady prosecutor falls for Randy. A good lookin character. She maneuvers a light sentence. Randy gets out, marries the prosecutor, lives happily until a ripe old age.
