Nic does a good job of simplicity and power ...but u all know its the extra jazzy drum rolls that made phil extraordinary

What all the RUclips critics here failed to see in these videos is the audience. Thousands of fans all singing, eyes closed, fists in the air, air drumming, air guitar strumming, air keyboarding. Not one person there in that audience cared if Phil was seated, or if he was a bit off key or even if he missed a line here or there. Hell, i dont think anyone even noticed! We were so caught up in the nostalgia and swept in the happy endorphins released with hearing our favorite songs played live one last time for us to enjoy, and enjoy it we did! So go ahead and pity, critcize and say what you will. The true fans who were in the audience know what you dont, this tour seriously kicked ass!!!!

I so totally agree with you!!! I’m so glad I got to see them one last time. Wish they would release a concert dvd. Most of these phone recordings don’t do it justice. Best band ever!!!

Well said. I was at the last gig. The band who I’ve followed for decades. Just saying goodbye to them was what mattered.

    • @sevlew
      @sevlew 9 месяцев назад

I was at one of those final gigs at the O2. I first saw them live in 1969 in the back room of a pub in Godalming, before either Collins or Hackett were in the band. The band were fantastic at the O2, but Phil was dreadful. I didn't leave my critical faculties at the door just because this was the final show of a band I've loved for more than 50 years. It was sad to see Phil as an old man, a shadow of his former athletic self, and unable to sing properly. In my view they should never have done the tour.

@@sevlew sorry you didn’t enjoy it. As I said I just wanted to say goodbye to my favourite group who I’d been with since 76.

Nic manages to make it sound like he's playing both Chester's and his Dad's parts on Firth of Fifth during the instrumental section. The perfect combination of power and speed.

I've loved Genesis since the 70s and experienced so many emotions watching this. Puts me in mind of Ripples from Trick of the Tail. The old woman looking back at her younger self. Sic transit Gloria, Phil, Mike, Tony, Peter and Steve. You're all angels standing in the sun.

To all the inexperienced RUclips rabble circus peanuts pitying Phil: if/when you get some experience, you'll (hopefully) be able to understand HOW MUCH COURAGE & STRENGTH Phil has to do this.
Instead of pity, you should feel admiration and respect - which the French audience very clearly does.

The band is in top form, and very glad Daryl Stuermer is back on guitar, but it's heartbreaking to watch Phil. I remember seeing him do his amazing tambourine shtick in the 70's, and this was the most difficult thing to watch here.

Listening to Phil is a lot easier than listening to Ian Anderson trying to sing Jethro Tull songs. I thought I should have gone to see Genesis one last time but then remembered they come anywhere near the west coast.

This sounds beautiful. Now that Phil is older, he just reminds me a lot of Jonathon Banks from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul. This isn't a put down at all. He just has a similar appearance, and carries himself in the same forceful kind of way.

Steve Hackett plays the track so much better live in his concerts than Daryl Stuermer who plays too many notes .
That being said I saw Genesis at The 02 on the penultimate night of this tour and thoroughly enjoyed it
Nik Collins was a revelation and was amazing on drums
It’ll be interesting to see how his career progresses now that Genesis have seemingly called it a day due to poor Phil’s ailing health

Any drummer whos playing a gig-and lets be honest, to him its all covers-does his homework.
Nic not only worked hard to get the versions right but incorporated some of the album grooves too. Ive seen tribute bands play and not one of the drummers is anywhere near as correct as Nic was with Genesis.

Stuermer's a fine player, but he's lost the plot with all his extra noodling on Firth. Having just seen Steve, the contrast is enormous. Some things you just leave alone, because they were perfect as originally created. It's like guys that start shredding on Comfortably Numb - leave it alone and just play with some feeling - you don't fu*k with the Mona Lisa. Phil's physical limitations don't bother me, but his inability to stay in the pocket just drives me nuts. I'm glad I didn't go to this tour - it woulda made me sad.

Fully agree on Daryls incessant jazz fusion overplaying of FoF. Then again I love the way he plays on the in the cage medley which is probably more suited to his playing style.

One of the five greatest guitar solos of all time and this Stuermer hacks it up. By adding all those extra notes and pitch bends, he loses the soaring grace, he loses the music, he throws away the instrumental's poetry.
